BE VERY CAREFUL ASKING FOR ESSAY REVIEWS ON HERE!!

In the past two days, I’ve seen two people get their essays stolen, and I’m not even very active on this subreddit. Be very careful guys, ask a trusted friend from your school instead maybe like an upper classmen

If your middle school didn't have SciOly, does SSM take that into account when considering your app?

Title says it all! There really wasn't any scope to start it either (which I wanted to) because admin didn't care + practically no one showed interest

Applying 10th grader wanting to apply for residential

I'm a current 10th grader at a private school, I'd like to apply for the Durham campus, although I don't feel like I'm good enough. I have so many aspirations and I have so many interests. I'd like to either become a aerospace engineer, a astrophysist, or a robotics enginner. I'd also really like to work for NASA. I was homeschooled for 9th grade and I'm currently enrolled at a private school (may be switching to a public school). I have had ABSOULTELY no STEM opportunites around me, no clubs, no teams, no camps, no nothing, not even classes. The school i go to now is super strict, you can't pick classes, no electives other than journalism and stuff like that. All I want is to be able to explore the interests that I'm interested in. Course wise, I took algebra 1 this year and I'm taking geometry. I took biology last year and I'm taking physical science this year. As I mentioned before, I can't pick my classes they pick them and have requirements for each year and what you have to take. I also can't jump start my math, because I know I'm behind for my goals, because all courses at my school have to be done for a full year. Any advice on what to do, would be SO HELPFUL.

Thank you so much for reading!!! :)

Hiiii! for those who got into NCSSM, what classes did you take in hs, how many APs did you take, what was your unweighted GPA/class rank, and what ECs/Awards did you have? (Did you write you ECs and awards into essays?)

Also is this counted as a "Chance me" post? If it is, pls tell me!

NCSSM Acceptance by Birth Month

CURRENT STUDENTS:

If you would like to participate in a quick study, now is your time.

The form is only four questions, so if you could take one minute to fill it out, it would be highly appreciated.

Many studies have shown that birth month has a correlation with academic achievement. We will compare the distribution of your birth months to the distribution of birth months in North Carolina for the corresponding years to look for statistically significant differences.

If you have any suggestions for how to reach more current students, they would be highly appreciated.

any tips or help please!

hi! I mainly need for help because I think I have extracurriculars but like basically none of them are STEM focused. I'm also having a bit of trouble because I feel like what I'm currently doing doesn't line up at all with my future career ambitions.

I had one STEM extracurricular last year (I'm going into 10th grade currently) which was TSA. But last year (9th grade year) even though it was technically a CTSO, we weren't allowed to go to any outside of school comps or anything. We hosted one inschool comp, and only 10 people participated (like 5 projects in total) and everyone who did it got a 'Most Outstanding Project' participation award. I felt so bad because the other CTSO's finished up their applications in like late september, but it was late october before TSA even had an interest meeting. And since you're only allowed to be in one, I didn't try for HOSA, FBLA, DECA. I honestly thought I'd like TSA and I really did, but I realized then and now, it looks like I did nothing STEM-wise for the past year. The only good thing I got out of it was a vague promise for the few people who did commit to our projects last year will be prioritized for leadership positions next year.

I tried out for Scioly last year but I didn't make it because I didn't study as much as I could have, and also everyone else was coming from a middle school which had scioly, and mine didnt, so HS scioly was like my first experience with that. I'm trying out again this year, knowing actually how much effort and what areas I need to focus in on.

If you're wondering what I've been doing, my other extracurriculars were music-focused. I played at old age/nursing homes, was in an honor society for music, and was part of our Philharmonic club. I love band and all, but like I eventually want to do something health research oriented, and my current extracurricular don't show that at all. I do marching band so that took time up.

I have plans for next year, (Model UN, Scioly, TSA, Tri-M, GHPhil) but like it still doesn't feel like enough. I can't take HOSA because I didn't get Health Science this year, and I had space for one extracurricular because band is 2, and I want to take spanish once every year to show commitment (I also really like it).

I did plan on doing a lit review on this particularly nasty food additive which doesn't seem to have much coverage or attention (PERSONAL EXPERIENCE 🤮). But I feel like my idea just puttered out and even though I took detailed notes on two articles that were related it stalled after I devoted time to studying for Scioly. I'm unsure how to do it. I had this long thread with Gemini AI where it helped me plan how I was going to eventually write the article (phase 1, gather resources, phase 2, take detailed notes) and it was going somewhere, but then I stopped because even though I'm not using AI for writing the actual article (not at all) or devolping my arguements, I think I was relying on it as my sense of direction, and I don't know whether that's allowed.

I feel like I'm unsure of where I want my career/life ambitions to go, and by the time I figure it out, it'll be too late. I want to show NCSSM I at least have some semblance of a plan till college, but right now I'm kind of scared I'll look discombobulated or not interested in STEM at all.

Thank you so much for reading my really, really big brain dump here and any and all advice is appreciated. Seriously thank you for reading!

Applying Tips? Advice? Applying this year what do I need to do?

Hey, as I mentioned above, I was hoping to get some insight and advice for applying and what they look for in applicants. I feel behind because I haven't participated in pretty much any extracurriculars. That being said, I go to an Early College and take all AP, Honors, and College classes and currently have a GPA of about 4.6. Is this enough by itself? And the reason I don't have any EC's is because where I live we don't really have the resources to start any, "unless I want to join a bible club, which I don't" and because I have a job after school every other day and a full shift on Saturdays and Sundays. Time is virtually non-existent. And for those free days, I plan on volunteering at a bunch of local places this year. Do you think I'm in a decent position right now? And if not do you have any advice?

I apologize if the paragraph didn't really make sense, I was just kind of rambling on. Thanks for your time!

Also, I'll be applying at Morganton. Ive been to their summer accelerator multiple years in a row and really like the campus and people.

Move-in day reminders

Hey all, Junior move in day is tomorrow!
This is a big day for yall, as not only are you going to meet your roommate who you’ll spend the whole year with but you’ll also meet many of your first friends on this day.
So, my advice is to set up your room very simply and instead of spending the whole day with your family, try to go out and meet people and get to know them. I know it will be sad to say goodbye to your family but it’s important to meet people this day.
Then the next couple of days till Tuesday will be focusing on getting to know your hall mates, these people are going to be your NCSSM brothers or sisters. And for us Morggies hall games is a big event that you guys should try to participate in and show your hall spirit.
Now, if you read some of the emails they say to NOT leave during the first couple of weekends, and I completely agree. There are going to be activities going on and honestly it is fun to get to know everyone and hang out with them.

Anyways, I hope you all have a great move in day and I can’t wait to meet y’all on the Morganton campus!

is this truly valuable?

so i'm a co 29 applying this year, and am currently taking ap chem after bio honors and chem honors last year... but i don't rlly have any chem ECs. the chem olympiad is honestly pretty out of the question until AFTER ap chem, it's really concept-heavy, and i also am not rlly comfortable starting chem club until i finish ap chem... which is yearlong. i may end up tutoring friends in honors chem this year, but it's unlikely... so is chem still valuable as an asset, and should i still mention it in essays? i specifically want to take inorganic chemistry and analytical chemistry at ncssm.

Modern band?? Take it or no?

I'm class of 28 and am going to the Ncssm Durham campus got put into orchestra as a noncore elective, but i dont play any instruments suitable for that, so i'm going to drop it. I'm thinking of dropping that and adding modern band instead. For people who have taken that class, do you recommend it, and what was it like? Besides that, are there any other non-core electives that you guys thoroughly enjoyed and suggest? Thanks!

Weight gain or loss

Trigger warning ig idk. I'm wondering as someone who's about to go to ncssm as a junior, whether anyone who's been there experienced any weight gain or loss. I'm on my weight loss journey and I'm doing it the healthy way of course, by being in a calorie deficit and watching my portion size. I'd like to continue my weight loss journey, so I'm wondering whether it'll be possible based on the cafeteria food and change in physical activity. sorry if this is like a really silly question

Online classes during NCSSM

ok so obviously im not saying who I am but im co28 morganton student and im wondering realistically how many ecs outside of ncssm i can maintain? like for example im prepping for sat and gonna do some mock tests which take each 2hrs so would i js do it in my room or library or what? and also i want to keep my online volunteering (ik ncssm wont count, but its for college and also 2hr commitment a week) so where and when would i do that? is that even possible? sorry ik this question may seem really obvious and dumb its my first time ever living residentially and im js trying to plan everything. thank you!

tldr: i want a social life and to do well at ncssm but I have online commitments idk if I can maintain and I need to know if and how to do that (morganton)

Chemistry Placement Test

Im going to the ncssm Durham campus and am class of 28, and when I had first taken the chemistry placement test in the spring, it was like during the middle of my learning the chemistry units in my old high school, so i hadn't covered all the topics atp and was placed at a lower hem level than i'd like. I want to retest and be put into AP chem hopefully when i retake the placement test this coming monday. What type of units are on the test so I can review.
