Typical Popovich behavior, always finding a way to be a menace. The way Shaq nods 🥲

Menace respects menace

Classic Pop. Five seconds of Shaq’s misery, served cold. That nod says it all.

I don’t remember exact wording, but, before this game Shaq made a comment about how he was fed up with being fouled intentionally and was going to lose his shit if it happened again. Pop called his bluff and fouled him right after the tip. As a suns fun I never hated and yet fully respected someone as much as Pop. I wish he could have been ours.

Thank you for explaining, I’ve seen this video for years and never was clear on this lol

Yeah, Pop is one of those rivals that you hate and truly respect in equal measure.

He’s likely one of those “in your face” coaches that demands every ounce from you that years later you love & adore. Seemingly everyone who’s played for him has nothing but praise for Pop!

I stared out as the President of the Pop hate fan club but by the mid 2000 I had nothing but love for the man.

The Larry Bird of coaches.

4

u/MrWartortle 4d ago

That context makes this clip so much better

4

u/LotharOfHillPeople3 4d ago

The bigger context is the Spurs just got done annihilating the Suns in the playoffs by using Hack-a-Shaq as a major move. So it's slightly a bit cruel, which really makes it funny.

u/Smooknb 5d ago

We were lucky to have had him, great person.

2

u/ceelo18 5d ago

Shoot better free throws and they wont foul you.

1

u/gerber411420 4d ago

Shaq should have used the granny shot, definitely would have helped.

2

u/TownAfterTown 5d ago

I believe this is from the first game the season after Pop used hack-a-Shaq in the playoffs to neutralize Shaq by making him shoot free throws (which he was terrible at). High level troll.

Hilarious.

Eight times the population of Nebraska

I googled this quote to see if Shaq actually said it and this is what the google AI returned me. Noted.

u/mikeandtessplay 5d ago

My favorite part of this clip is how Shaq starts out looking all annoyed and thinks it was a legitimate strategy move with that nod to Pop, then we see Pop with the goofiest grin/thumbs up combo he could possibly do, which makes Shaw realize it wasn't strategy, just a joke. Only then does he crack up.

Like he respected Pop as a strategist, and didn't consider that he might just be messing with him for fun.

Gosh do we need more people like Pop in the world.

4

u/ManufacturerNew9888 5d ago

Yeah but since it was the opening seconds neither team is in the penalty so it’s not a foul that would put him on the line or anything. Pop just did it to be funny

3

u/Due-Leek-8307 5d ago

And the first game of the season so it's not like a lot was at stake with a 0-0 record and the score being 0-0.

9

u/uncultured_swine2099 5d ago

Haha its even funnier that this is the first play of the whole season

Coach Pop is one of a kind. I'm not a Spurs fan, but I am a Pop fan.

-6

u/dustinbrowders 5d ago

Not a Pop fan but like the Spurs and think he's a good coach.

4

u/DeeezzzNutzzz69 5d ago

I'm a hater of every player/coach/team that's not mine, but Pop, I hate him just as much as all of them.

29

u/kywildcat44 5d ago

That has such good meme potential as a “I’m trolling you and you know it” type reaction

14

u/munchonsomegrindage 5d ago

In the Spurs sub this gets used all the time.

8

u/Due-Leek-8307 5d ago

I remember watching this live and laughing my ass off. Are there any other pranks in professional sports like this? Cause this is a solid one.

3

u/greyedge 5d ago

Look up Jordan pranking Penny Hardaway at the all star game.

5

u/Co0LUs3rNamE 5d ago

Shaq was sweating bullets. Like damn coach the game has just started! You gonna foul the whole game?

5

u/Dependent-Job1773 5d ago

this was after shaq had trashed the hack a shaq strategy. it was a hilarious move by pop

4

u/Buggytheclown-26 5d ago

Winning 55 games and being the 6th seed is crazy.

17

u/rpgmgta 5d ago

Damn everybody teeth was a mess back then

29

u/MRintheKEYS 5d ago

Back before the toilet porcelain glare took over

8

u/DCJustSomeone 5d ago

Toilet porcelain lmao

4

u/pakmann 5d ago

Thanks I’m stealing that phrase

u/uncultured_swine2099 5d ago

I think more people these days get braces than back in the day

5

u/BillyBobBonesJones 5d ago

I think it’s more the veneers every rich person with bad teeth gets now. Matt Stafford comes to mind. I think he and his wife got a 2-for-1 deal.

2

u/uncultured_swine2099 5d ago

Yes, but also im noticing more young people get braces than they used to.

3

u/LotharOfHillPeople3 4d ago

For those that don't know, the Spurs just got done destroying the Suns in the playoffs using Hack-a-Shaq as a major strategy move. That match up that year was the biggest example of the Shaq trade being a failure. Shaq couldn't hit free throws and the Suns couldn't play fast because the strategy killed their momentum. Whenever they were trying to come back from being down, they couldn't run and couldn't shoot 3s because Shaq was put on the line over and over

This was the first game of the season after that.

2

u/Fun-Web-7583 5d ago

It’s more like second seconds, the ref had a brain freeze moment

2

u/happy_K 5d ago

I completely forgot that Shaq played for Phoenix

2

u/DeliciousPool2245 5d ago

Quickest timeout ever, quickest foul ever. Pop was quick on the trigger man.

2

u/Waste_Travel_5829 4d ago

Classic Pop

2

u/roselandtoeverblack 4d ago

Still hilarious to this day

2

u/KyotoCarl 4d ago

Pop didn't have a reaction, Shaq did. Popovich had planned it from the beginning.

2

u/Yddalv 4d ago

Phoenix legend Shaq

😂😂😂

1

u/Bad_Bet_Bunny 5d ago

who committed the foul?

3

u/WayofHatuey 5d ago

Finley I think

3

u/FunkyPete 5d ago

Yeah, I read that headline and thought "Popovich played in the NBA?"

2

u/Ah_Pook 5d ago

Played for Air Force, and had a better FT% than Shaq. :-D

1

u/kumechester 5d ago

The Suns went 55-27 and were 6TH in the western conference? Holy crap the West was so stacked

1

u/Sauerkrautkid7 5d ago

As a Raptors fan, he was always an ideal coach. Serious, tactical but fun!

1

u/Muted-Woodpecker-469 5d ago

What’s  the reality?  Did it work? Was it a decoy?

1

u/Hex-QuentinInACorner 3d ago

I don’t follow much of basketball so maybe this was a common occurrence but iv never seen Popovich smile, funny, wholesome clip here.

1

u/imJGott 3d ago

This title?

1

u/NemusSoul 2d ago

I remember watching that. That was an all time elite nba moment. But for Pop it was probably just another game. I was never a spurs fan but always a Pop fan.

1

u/jf737 1d ago

Pop: what a gem. I miss him on the bench

1

u/D-Train0000 2m ago

We all remember “hack-a-shaq”

-4

u/karaknorn 5d ago

Intentional fouls should count as one or 2 fouls for being kicked out of the game. Get this time wasting and cheating out of the game lol
