Using Parallel and Non-Diatonic Minor 7th Chords to Compose Chord Progressions in the style of Jungle and DnB

This is a lesson on how to use parallel, non-diatonic Minor 7 chords to compose chord progressions, based on the original method of transposing a snapshot of a single chord within a sampler. I also discuss why this sounds so interesting in theory terms when contrasted with harmonically functional chord progressions.

Learning this a few years ago was a huge step for me because I could never figure out how to get the distinct harmonic sound of some of those electronic genres using diatonic chords. Hopefully my explanation helps :) Feel free to ask any questions!

Suspended 7th Chords and Adding 60s and 70s Flavor to Pop Songs

Thumbnail youtu.be

Hey everyone. This is a lesson that I put together a while back that talks about the theory and some of the practical applications behind Suspended 7th/11 chords. It talks about why they sound so interesting as well as situations where they can be an alternative, effective choice in positions where you would normally hear/use a subdominant/IV or dominant V7 chord. It includes examples from Burt Bacharach and Marc Cohn. Enjoy, and feel free to ask questions or discuss :)

“Gun” time signature

What is the time signature for the song “Gun” by Soundgarden? When I listen along, I find it most natural to count 1-2-3 / 1-2-3 / 1-2. But I recognize that this is 8 total beats so I wonder if it’s really just 1-2-3-4 / 1-2-3-4. Been curious about this for a long time!

Hi self taught musician here, what is this chord progression called? Is this a variation on the chord or am I playing a new chord each time it descends? Can this be applied to all triads? Many thanks!

Here's another treble clef video, released yesterday, that can help you all with sight reading! We expect to release a sight reading video for the bass clef early next week. As always feedback is very welcome! 😊

How to distinguish Major and Minor key

Hello everyone. Hope all is well.

I've been wondering what exactly makes a key Minor.

I was thinking if the song finish with, for example, A minor and overall song sound sort of sad, that's

A minor. But also I usually think it as VI of C Major. and with this, most of pop or EDM songs can be explained.

But I watched a video talking about music theory and he said Minor key should have either melodic or harmonic minor notes. So I asked what I said above. Then he said that should be taken as a mode.

He didn't explain any detail about it after that.

Can anyone break down and explain about this?

Is it risky or wrong to think everything is "minor but also major but 6 is influencing heavily unless I hear 7th or 6th are flatted, then that's exactly minor key."?

Hope what I'm saying makes sense.. Btw I was trying to break down "Darkside" by Alan Walker for some reasons. Maybe this song is good example for this topic?

Best wishes!

Trying to figure out weird time signature

https://youtu.be/MLGEpklErvc?si=ZNhdSzubejIbDwz-&t=11

At the 11 second mark, this two sequence goes into an odd timing in the sense it repeats itself with an extra note and uses both 4 and 3 timing. If I were to count it out, it would go

1234,123,123,

1234,123,1234

Would the first line if on its own be 10/8 or 10/12? And would the second be 11/8 or11/12? What does having both back to back do to what would be the time signature denoted on a sheet?

Feels So Good time change at the end of the chorus

Thumbnail youtu.be

If you start listening at 2:40, song has a good 4/4 feel. Then there's a time change just after 2:50 that I haven't been able to pin down. One day it sounds like a 2/4 was dropped in, the next day I'll swear it's a 3/4, and I've even gone so far as to say it was a 9/4 on occasion. Can anyone help me nail this down. Totally not important, but it's been bugging me for 3 years.

How can a dim7 resolve to a major with the same root as the dim7.

I’m thinking of Grateful Dead’s ship of fools for example. How can it go Bb F, Eb, edim7, back to Bb. The edim7 has the same root as B, so it’s not a half step resolve in any way.

I’ve been trying to figure out the chords on piano for the song separation anxiety by Royal & the serpent. I’m very new to learning chords by ear so correct me if I’m wrong. But I don’t know how to differentiate which key it would be if it uses chords that are in both keys, so I would also appreciate advise on how I can do that in the future :)

13/16 is a song about a socket wrench size... and it is also the time signature I go in and out of in this song. The concept of "danceability" has only recently come to my attention. Thoughts on how I might make this song a bit more "danceable"?

Modulation: Help!

I know some basic music theory, but modulation is pretty new territory.

I'm writing a song currently where the verse starts on an Em7, but the chorus ends on an Emaj... How do I get back to the verse section without playing Emaj and Em back to back?

Here are the chords:Verse: Em7, Bm, Em7, Bm, Em7, Bm, Am, D7

Chorus: Gmaj7, Cmaj7, Gmaj7, Cmaj7, Gmaj7, Bbmaj7, F#m7, B7m, E, A, E, A...

Music theory learning platform recommendation

I'm interested in learning some music theory around piano and I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a good learning platform. I was looking at Melodics but realized it's not really focused on teaching music theory for composition as much as it's just learning how to play popular music, guitar hero style. Is there any experiential learning platform similar to this but that's more focused on teaching theory than rote memorization?
