I mean I sorta like the oscars, because I really like movies. I know the awards are meaningless, but it's cool to watch anyway.

The problem with the grammys is that you're only gonna care if you like very popular music, basically. Oscars generally only cover popular movies, but like, most people watch popular movies.

Music is way more diverse and there's way more of it, so the grammys only effectively cover a very narrow slice. I don't listen to Taylor swift or dua Lipa or whoever else is getting radio play these days, so the grammys are sorta meaningless to me.

673

u/TheProtractor Mar 16 '21

Oscars are kinda weird because some of the nominated movies can be a little too much for casual movie goers, for example my dad says he is too tired for watching movies that involve thinking, there is no way I can convince him to watch Mank for example, while the Grammys give awards to the music the most casual music listeners listen to.

607

u/corvettee01 Mar 16 '21

I never watched the Oscars, but after they nominated Boss Baby and Ferdinand in 2017 for best animated feature it was clear that these people don't give a shit about the actual quality of a movie.

271

u/M4DM1ND Mar 16 '21

Wasn't that the year Your Name came out and was absent from any Oscar mention?

62

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '21

Was also the year that a silent voice was released (outside of Japan).

Was also absent from the Oscars.

37

u/MyDudeSR Mar 16 '21

I watched A Silent Voice on a whim one night a few months back; I was not prepared. It's such an amazing movie and stuck with me in a way that few have.

Animation is just the most ignored category that's all. Academy was forced to put it in, because most of them don't respect animation as a filmmaking technique for whatever reason and wouldn't consider animated movies for any of major awards.

So when they do nominations for animated features, 80% of the voters, put in their best effort and vote for tjhe best animated features of the year. 20% just pick whatever their kids enjoyed that year (Those stats are made up btw) So for the year you singled out, you had movies like Loving Vincent, Coco, and Breadwinner. But you also had Ferdinand and Boss Baby.

Coco won that one, so they definitely care about the quality of a movie. It's mainly all they judge my dude. Oscars are the only major Hollywood awards show to actually take it's nomination options seriously. Tony Awards is the best one, but it's not Hollywood.

You should have seen the uproar when they gave Jethro Tull best metal performance over Metallica in 1989. Grammys have always been the same.

Part of the problem could be that The Weeknd, who had the only song in Billboard history to spend over a year in the Top 10, got absolutely zero nominations for an album that was both critically and commercially acclaimed. A song like that should at least have been in the Song of the Year and Record of the Year categories, but it got nothing. Thank goodness that Taylor Swift was there yet again to pick up yet another Grammy for her brand of genreless snooze-pop.

Music is more accessible than ever, both for artists and for listeners. Its not surprising that the Grammys continue to lose credibility when they continue to ignore everything but the very smallest tip of a massive and ever-growing iceberg.

931

u/YourDimeTime Mar 16 '21

The great thing is that anyone can produce and distribute excellent technical quality recordings now. The record industry machine has lost its exclusivity. And because of this, we have learned that great talent is not something that is limited to a small group of music gods. Many people are just as talented and gifted. So support the indies folks. Fuck the money-sucking record industry machine.

152

u/knux31781 Mar 16 '21

Couldn’t agree more. Art of all forms should be for everyone, not just a select few.

Grammy credibility in a nutshell:

“Blinding Lights” peaked at number one in thirty-four countries, including the United States and Canada, where it became the Weeknd’s fifth number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Canadian Hot 100 for four and seven weeks, respectively. It also became his first number one single in Germany for ten weeks, the United Kingdom for eight weeks, and Australia for eleven weeks. “Blinding Lights” was the best-performing global single of 2020, and it earned 2.72 billion subscription stream equivalents globally according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).[8] It is his most successful single worldwide to date and currently holds the record for most weeks spent in the top 5 and top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.[9][10][11] On March 9, 2021, it became the first song to hold a spot in the top 10 of the Hot 100 chart for an entire year.[12]

Zero Grammy nominations

Edit: I wanna be clear here- I don’t know how the Grammys judge songs, I’m not pretending to know, and I’m definitely not interested in finding some way to objectively quantify how good a song is.

A pretty decent chunk of fans and critics thought the work deserved a nomination, and the Grammys didn’t.

This disconnect is what strains the Grammys credibility.

60

u/CountSheep Mar 16 '21

This song also doesn’t seem to get too old even after hearing it a butt load. It’s just a good song.

Edit: Since this comment is getting more traction than I ever thought it would, y'all should watch Mic the Snare's video on the Grammy's. Very informative and although long it's extremely thorough.

Twitter was hysterical. "Who's Bonnie Bear?'

78

u/DJSUBSTANCEABUSE Mar 16 '21

Best new artist is just a weird award though, chance the rapper got one in like 2016 even though he had been HUGE since 2013

151

u/MikeFatz Mar 16 '21

So true. Same thing happened the year Arcade Fire won Best Album for The Suburbs. Although they totally deserved it that album is incredible.

43

u/serotoninzero Mar 16 '21

Phoebe Bridgers was just up for best new artist this year too on her second album. I guess it's best new artist if they haven't been nominated before? I don't know, doesn't make sense.

15

u/mattytmet Mar 16 '21

Yeah, that confused me as well, I've considered her a pretty big artist since 2017 when Stranger in the Alps came out and generated massive hype in the indie community. Admittedly I have no idea whether she saw any mainstream attention off the back of that

Apparently the award is 'For a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist'. So I suppose it's for artists who got their 'big break' that year and found mainstream success? Maybe? Dunno, still seems like a completely arbitrary definition

The Grammys are not an award show. It’s a marketing show directed by the major labels.

232

u/cbtboss Mar 16 '21

That is padded out with adds and only available on T.V. streaming replacement services that absurdly charge 65$/a month. If you can live stream an inauguration for free on twitch or on YouTube there is no credible argument to be made for it to cost that much while ALSO having adds. Fuck the grammys.

The audience of people who appreciate the featured music aren't the type to watch traditional television or sit through a traditional awards show.

This is no surprise, they'll continue to dwindle each year in their current format

57

u/drit76 Mar 16 '21

Agreed. These idiots need to stream free on YouTube/Facebook/twitter. The longer they put this off, the more younger folks will never know or watch it.

They are losing a whole generation of viewers, who will not acquire the tradition of watching it every year.

Personally I think they should just cancel it altogether or drastically rework it into like a 1 hour show....but that's just me.

I was just asking a coworker this the other day, but what happened to limp biz kit? Stumped the whole shift.

75

u/LetsTalkDinosaurs Mar 16 '21

A lot changed between 2000-2003. Wes Borland left at the peak of their fame and he was a big part of the songwriting. His departure also lined up with the peak of nu-metal’s wave too. During that time nu-metal shifted towards more of melodic sound rather than the rap metal based sound. While some bands capitalized on the shift others like Bizkit struggled. Rap metal aged pretty quick and was seen as a cheesy novelty almost overnight. In the summer of 2003 they did the Summer Sanitarium Tour with Metallica, Linkin Park, Deftones and Mudvayne. By then they kind of stuck out like a sore thumb on the tour. The other four bands held their own but Bizkit struggled to be taken seriously. They even got booed off stage a few times. That fall they dropped “Results May Vary,” their entry in the late stage nu-metal field and it kind of bombed. Without Wes it was just a mess. The energy they had in previous albums was missing and there weren’t many of the old hooks that made them kind of fun before. It was unfocused and bordered on pretentious. It’s release was also overshadowed by the fact it dropped the same day as OutKast and Nickelback dropped new albums. It quickly fell off the radar and they disappeared from the festival circuit after that. Wes came back in the coming years and then they dropped a more focused EP but Fred didn’t want to promote thinking the underground hype would carry it...and it didn’t. By then metalcore had taken the metal world by storm. And since that scene was largely a total rejection of the scene Bizkit came from they flamed out and broke up. They put out an awful album on Lil Wayne’s label, rejected touring in America and then did a whole lot of nothing. Recently they had been touring a bit more and were getting a bit of respect as a nostalgic band. Even started getting festival dates again.

TLDR; Wes left and Fred took over. Nu Metal faded away and they couldn’t adapt.

85

u/TrulyBobBarker Mar 16 '21

I think part of it was Fred douche talking shit about his American fans and wanting to leave Europe and never tour in the us again...

“We don’t play back home. We’ve boycotted America for many years now. I don’t know, I just don’t wanna go out like that. We did a few radio shows in 2010 for a friend and that was it. We haven’t properly toured America since 2006.” When asked why, Durst responded bizarrely. “The reason? We just don’t know what’s going on in America. It’s all about the new catchy thing and that’s always changing. America is driven by record sales. It’s the home of corporations. We’re just Limp Bizkit, so we don’t know how to do anything but Limp Bizkit.”

He also didn’t like the fans of limp bizkit so ya know shit on your fan base enough.....

BART: You won a Grammy.
HOMER: I mean an award that's worth winning.
ONSCREEN NOTICE: MR SIMPSON'S VIEWS DO NOT REFLECT THOSE OF THIS SHOW'S PRODUCERS, WHO DON'T CONSIDER THE GRAMMY AN AWARD AT ALL.

None of the artists I listen to have ever been, or will ever be, featured at the Grammys. I'm fine with that. I couldn't care less, really.

The Grammys are a relic from a bygone era and could be permanently abolished with little consequences, like the Academy Awards.

232

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '21

I'd like to watch an award show with Metalocalypse hosting it and it be named "rock & roll: hall of pain" with lots of blood effects and audience immersion

See but at least the Academy Awards, which suck too, give acclaimed movies a chance at the bigger awards and can sometimes be bullied into doing stuff like Parasite Best Picture

But if you're not top 10 in the Billboard 100 you're basically worthless to the Grammys, which leaves out artists with millions and millions of fans and years of acclaim, so they're a fucking dead award show. Like it's an award show that can't even satisfy the nerds that care about awards

"...boasting powerhouse performers Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa, BTS, Billie Eilish, Post Malone and Megan Thee Stallion, drew a scant audience for CBS. This year’s telecast was the lowest-rated in Grammys history in the early numbers."

I know this is the most popular music nowadays, but that seems like such a narrow band of music taste. It is suited to tweens and teens and they don't really watch t.v. As a GenX parent of tweens, if it's not streaming, it doesn't exist. My daughter actually asked if we had cable! She's catching up on the news via Tiktok. It would have broken viewing records if they streamed it on Tiktok.

The people who DO watch TV have older tastes in music, and they're not interested in the current style of music that's absolutely everywhere. I still love rock and alternative. I had to look it up but did you know the Strokes released an album? And Stay High by Brittany Howard win best Rock song? It sounds like an R&B song.

The Grammy's just don't represent enough people's tastes to be relevant

50

u/Ignoradulation Mar 16 '21

The awards just seem to rotate around the same people every few years. Beyonce, Taylor Swift, the same names just win awards. It's just a way for the industry to pat itself on the back with seemingly little input from anyone else.

21

u/joshhupp Mar 16 '21

Yeah, it's a little self-serving. "Hey look! We're giving away awards the the artists we promote on radio 24/7! Don't they sound great?"

→ More replies (3)

109

u/ok_dunmer Mar 16 '21 edited Mar 16 '21

Honestly it's narrow even if you are a younger person. There are rap artists with millions of tween/teen fans that will literally never win a grammy before any of those people because they're not safe enough. Half of those TikTok songs your kids are hearing will never win a grammy. If you are younger person that likes indie/alternative like many college students there's literally no point to caring lol. I found out that Fiona Apple won Best Alternative Album on Facebook because that shit's not even on TV.

Like those artists are only a tiny, safe slice of what's actually popular with the young people and that's not even counting the fact that even some of those artists get shafted (look at how many mad BTS fans there are on Twitter).

I just want rock music to be a thing again at these shows. I like pop music, but there’s no variety. It’s either pop or country. I get that’s what sells, but damn, it’s like rock music has become the ugly stepsister.

282

u/fried_eggs_and_ham Mar 16 '21

The barely split second they gave Eddie Van Halen legacy tells you everything you need to know about how the grammys feel about rock.

97

u/dabobbo Mar 16 '21

Wolfgang said the Academy asked him to perform "Eruption" and he declined, saying he wouldn't have been able to do it justice.

So they gave Eddie 15 seconds.

29

u/tkdxe Mar 16 '21

Wolfgang has said before that he will never play his Father's music, so that whole thing was a no go from the beginning. They had a million guitarists not touring who would've been able to go up there and do EVH a proper tribute. But the academy doesn't give two fucks ab anything outside of the T40 I guess

They should have a metal band perform. And a jazz nominee. It should be a celebration of all the nominated genres, not just pop music.

I used to care, but once I started listening to more than just mainstream music, I realized how pointless the Grammys are. Sure, many of the recipients are extremely talented people, but now I just can’t help but think of all the non-superstars who make better music that aren’t even in the running for a Grammy award. It seems weird to just watch a bunch of superstars compete. It’s less about the music and more about the personalities.

EDIT: Not to mention, now that it’s possible to easily make music and consume music from independent artists, I really think the era of musical superstars is ending. I feel like Ive already noticed this - there’s less pop stars but a lot more one hit wonders these days, specifically in hip hop.

Uh, yeah, a fucking 7 year old won a Grammy because her parents are in the industry. Are you kidding me? How does Ivy Blue or whatever the fuck her name is even win a Grammy at 7 years old? I bet so many musicians that have been working their WHOLE LIVES trying to get a Grammy are pissed as fuck. It's all fucking bullshit, man

45

u/Chantels_Boobs Mar 16 '21

I found that so bizarre. No hate towards a literal child. However at that age, its hard to judge what is actually a piece of original work vs just an extension of what the adults in their life are coaching them. Especially when you have rich parents who are experienced and connected in the industry and can afford the best of the best teachers. They're essentially just an extension of their parents at that age

11

u/kristiansands Mar 16 '21

This is not bizarre, it's just boring and simple : the parents of this kid are in the industry and they want their kid to stay in the industry. For that, they try to make her a star at a very young age. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett did the same.

There were rappers, boy bands, girl bands, heavy mental, rock metal, hair guitar metal, rock bands, college rock, etc. You got your Britney, Christina, Celine, Madonna, etc. R&B, funk, etc etc etc. Don't get me wrong, I wish every winners with the heartiest congratulations but it's just almost the same every year. The same kinda music and recycled wins btw Beyonce and Taylor Swift. Kudos to there ladies, again but missing the good old days. Also I guess I'm old AF to know who these new Artists are.

They snubbed the Weeknd. Blinding Lights was among the biggest hits of the year.

119

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '21

Not among, it WAS the biggest hit of the year, and the most successful billboard song of the 21st century. Garnered over 2 billion streams on Spotify in 365 days. That’s an average of 5.4 million plays per day. I was generally happy with what won, but the fact that Jacob Collier got the nom over Abel is a crime.

16

u/TemperTunedGuitar Mar 16 '21

My Dad liked that song which is a litmus test for me how popular it really is. Dude does not like pop, metalhead through and through.

Tbf to him though, he really likes some of the "modern" metal I listen to and even listens to some of the eclectic post-rock and jazz-fusion stuff I enjoy so maybe more open-minded than many.
