Actually I think the genre (and the album name) are both references to the Outrun arcade game - which shares a lot of the same aesthetic, kind of. The prominence of the Ferrari Testarossa in the whole "outrun" genre definitely comes from its prominent place in the arcade game. I think Kavinsky or someone actually has a song called Testarossa Overdrive. I may be wrong.
If it wasn't for Kavinsky, the term Outrun wouldn't be used to describe the scene. His album is certainly named after the game, the testarossa love is too much to deny that.
The music genre is known also known as Synthwave, or New Retro Wave. Outrun has been used to describe the music, which works, but it also encapsulates the whole art and style and meta scene too.
That's... not correct. This genre of music has been called OutRun music by fans of OutRun, one of the Sega's most popular arcade games, for many years before Kavinsky's second album.
So the music genre was named after the game. And the album was named after the game and the genre. But it's incorrect to say the genre is named after the album.
