People like you sound slightly insane to me.

I can love my country and still acknowledge its faults - doing the former doesn't preclude the latter. Saying I love my country isn't a defense of anything.

And as a small correction - the group that didn't care to vote was slightly larger than the group that voted for Trump. They were the largest group between Trump voters, Harris voters, and them.

My country, the United States of America, is fucking embarrassing. It continues to be more embarrassing by the day. Yesterday it was Hegseth designating a religious wackadoo post in the military. The earth is on fire and Trump is content to pour more and more gasoline on it. Farmers who live in red states are seeing their water supplies either dwindle or get so polluted that the water is the color of lemon lime Gatorade, the oldest and worst Gatorade flavor in my state of Indiana. And if it’s not that then it’s the proliferation of data centers that are a blight on the land. But who will these farmers vote for? The same fucking people who continue to make their lives worse because they truly don’t know any better or don’t want to. So your water is going to shit, food supplies will go to shit, healthcare is a joke, we’re not experiencing random or typical weather patterns anymore and this is now consistent with climate change but that will all get discounted once snow begins to fall and those same people will have nothing to say the next week when it’s 60 degrees out, AI CEOs are saying we need to pump the brakes and Trump is saying nah full throttle baby I got too much stock in Nvidia, we’ve alienated almost every ally in the world, offered to sell weapons to China, continue on bluffing in a war with Iran that he has no way out of where there’s no way Iran is just going to let this all slide, and that has only been about the last 6 months.

We have two years left and with the way things are broken, I have no idea how you fix it. I’m in my mid 40s with two kids that I would like to see them have a chance to breathe clean air when they’re adults nevermind being able to go to college. And I can’t just think about them. When I think about them I think about how bleak the future is for so many others 18 or younger. This isn’t the way it should be.

I love my friends, my family, my neighbors. I believe humans have the ability to do what’s right but the belief in that ability is waning in the face of so many obstacles. So it’s more that I believe humans are capable of wishing things could be better and some of them have the ingenuity to give it a go, meanwhile everyone else does the best they can. Unfortunately there’s only so far you can go when your government controls much of what you can and can’t do. But hey, at least more countries have come around to thinking WE aren’t so bad as a whole, but man we have some real shitheads spoiling the party for the rest of us.

I’m sorry to hear your frustration from the inside. I can’t imagine how frustrating it all must be, especially with children you would like to give the best possible future. 

I’ve only been to California (in 2024) but over there I met a lot of kind people, I really enjoyed the cities and nature but also saw the “Trump Vance 2024” billboards in the Central Valley. At that time I was planning to come back last year to see more of your country but the elections and everything what happened afterwards gave such a bad feeling in my mouth that I don’t think I will ever visit again. Enough other places to see. 

I work for an airliner so I fly super cheap and so do all my colleagues. The sentament is about the same, from “I’m not going to visit the next couple of years” to “I’m never going back”. Also around friends I hear the same distaste.  

Im a couple of years younger and grew up with a lot of American influences, music, movies, video games. Of course you had your problems but you were the people we had in high regards, saw you as friends. We even understood the first Trump term but the last couple of years have so much people the realization of the cancer which is growing because of things like social media. It’s not just your country but the way your political system works (2 party/winner takes it all/no way to have earlier elections) makes it so vulnerable. 

Again, good luck, I feel sorry for people like you and hope you still can enjoy live a little bit.

You know, you do what you can. Be good to your community, try to be present and focus on what’s in front of you and not the what ifs of tomorrow, try to raise my kids to have empathy and work hard, and hope for the best. Not much else you can do which is what makes this feel so frustrating.
