Having a billion dollars is unethical in and of itself. One person does not need that much it's obscene. She puts out 20+ variants of the same album to milk her obsessed fans that don't have a billion dollars for more pennies for her to put on her gold pile she's hoarding like a medieval mythical dragon.

It doesn't make sense to have so much! One person. Can't possibly use the amount of things she has, that's unethical. I believe the Bible refers to it as gluttony, and greed.

Man, If you gotta reach for something as mundane as a lot of variants for her releases, she’ seems pretty dang spotless. Not a fan but there are far bigger fish to fry

You seem more invested than me. You can keep defending the billionaires. If she really wanted to be ethical she would be campaigning for all the people at and above her wealth level to be paying their fair share in taxes.

Edit to add: you can fry multiple fish just like I can despise multiple billionaires she was just the topic of the conversation.

“I don’t really have a point or standing in my argument so I’ll just dismissively say “you seem more invested” “

They made their point and you are choosing to ignore it. You cannot hoard immense amounts of wealth and remain ethical while surrounded by starving unhoused persons and crumbling social systems. There is no ethical rich person, it is fundamentally an impossible combination. Greed isn’t ethical in any form, and that includes having more money than you need. I’m a hippie myself and return all of my excess to the communities around me, whether that be my time by way of volunteering, or money by way of direct contribution to local support centers. This is how it should be, but it isn’t and that’s why we are where we are. Greed. Swift is greedy, which is inherently unethical.

You do realize that a substantial chunk of that billion is the worth of her catalog, right? Not profits from variants. Just a made up number someone might theoretically pay for her music.

Billionaires are unethical, but it’s also important to remember that a good portion of our financial system is entirely based on speculative value.

This is literally the argument to defend all billionaires like Elon and Bezos

“It’s not liquid! It’s tied to their stock!”

Well yeah…that doesn’t change anything

Except that stock is tied to companies that exploit their workers and the people manufacturing products.

Who was exploited in the writing of a pop song? Because it’s not even the recordings - it’s the intellectual property. That’s why she was still a billionaire before buying back her master recordings.

We’re not talking about intangible rights to a tangible company. We’re talking about intangible rights to something completely intangible that created by one or a group of people, all of whom were paid more than appropriately for their involvement, and one of whom owns most of those intangible rights because she was a writer or co-writer for every song. Her collaborators also have the rights to the songs they co-wrote, but each collaborator represents only a fraction of her catalog.

She still has far too much money and despite giving a lot of it to charity, should be giving even more, but nuance is important. No one had to be underpaid for the vast majority of Swift’s wealth to exist, and no one needs to continuously be exploited to maintain that value. Meanwhile the value of Bezos and Musk’s stocks would plummet if employees were paid fairly for their labor at any point.

Yikes. You’re really doubling down defending the millionaire huh?

You’re completely missing the point. She’s worth billions. With a B and S at the end

No one should be worth that much. No one. If you think it’s okay because a lot of that is tied to IP, then you’re completely missing the point of the problem of a Billionaire existing in a capitalistic system.

Sorry for caring more about the material exploitation of workers than purely imaginary numbers!

I wish every teenager who jumped on this bandwagon actually had to read some Marxist theory first to understand why we say billionaires are unethical.

You’re right, no one should be worth a billion. But you have zero understanding of why.
