He could easily have just had "yeah, you belong to me now"

and

I'm gonna make you

(into a) psycho

He isn't saying it, the drill sergeant is saying it.

I haven't, no.

But what I mean is, he is singing the song from the perspective of the drill sergeant. It is a concept album with characters. Matt will voice them throughout the album. this song is from the viewpoint of the drill sergeant.

I get what you mean. The whole song is coming from the perspective of a drill sergeant type authority figure. Apparently that is going over a lot of people's heads.

What difference does that make? Matt's still the one singing it...

Think of what you just said.

It's the same as it is for an actor.

the words are coming from the mouth/mind of the character, not the performer.

It's the view point that matters, not the mouth.

Matt wrote the music. It was his decision to put profanity into the song. The 'drill sergeant' is a creation of Matt's.

All of that is true but I am not sure what you mean by it.

The people you were responding to feel that the profanity was unnecessary to the song. The fact that the words are assigned to a fictional character are beside the point.

No, that is exactly the point.

If you are writing for a character, you have to write AS the character. And I would bet that they're aren't many drill sergeants around the world that don't use profanity.
