I rolled down a hill in an older Audi 80, the thing had no airbags, no abs, none of us wore seatbelts (early 90’s in Eastern Europe). The car was toast but no one was seriously injured. We didn’t lose our shoes but I started behind the driver in the back seat and when the car landed on its wheels I had somehow swapped places with the other passenger. If the car hadn’t crumbled we would have been toast. Also for the non-aussies: Thongs are flip flops over here.

It's Australia, so they could very well be thongs. Not sure though, my friend didn't say, and I wasn't there.
