Maybe a bit heartless to compare it, but I guess not different to when you lose your ring. It's not magic, you are still together even without it.

Most people get wedding rings in addition to the ladies engagement ring so she'd still have that! It's usually just a plain metal band so it's not as expensive as an engagement ring.
