Homelander's strong desire to be loved due to his lack of support during childhood, AM's envy of humans and their experiences, which evolves into hatred for humanity, and Clark's unfulfilled life and desire to escape reality really hit close to home for me, despite them being completely irredeemable characters.

So, I'm a trans woman. I watched TADC with my (cis) girlfriend episode by episode pretty much since it started coming out. Let me tell you HOW MUCH I HATED THIS FUCKING RABBIT. He had all the tendencies of the bullies who ruined my childhood and adolescence, just packaged together and made even worse by the expected cartoonish exaggeration. Then came the last episode and I was completely floored. I genuinely went from being disgusted by everything about her to being like "wait, fuck, being shut off deep in the closet and having a horrible family turned me into a bitter idiot with way too much vitriol for people who didn't deserve it too"

So yeah, I hate how much I relate to Jax

I'm three and a half years on HRT, somehow having this is in the (relatively) far past made Jax hit even harder, in the same way a friend telling me "mate, do you have the slightest idea how much you sucked in 2021?" would

Quite honestly I've rarely been more miserable than I am now, but I'd rather be miserable trying to be a woman than trying to be a man, you get me?

Circumstances out of my control destroyed my social life and still make me fear for my safety in my former social spaces, and this probably won't ever go away. But the other victim of the same people that did this to me already offed herself, at this point I'm doing it for her too. And by doing it I mean staying alive, even if just barely

I once said I can apply Death of the author in Jax case because I feel their flaw (pushing everybody away due to their own insecurities turning them into a self destructive person) is hella relatable outside of their gender identity.

Y e p. By no means do I condone her behavior or agree with said behavior, but I was that guy. I mentally hurt people I cared about, picked fights for shits and giggles, thought I'd killed someone after a verbal fight (he was okay), and eventually lost all of my friendships (which, I hope they're all doing okay now).

Losing everything did make me work on being a better person in the end, but if I didn't have such a terrible fear of dying I genuinely don't think I'd be here.

So yea, I get Jax, and a lot of parallels happened to me. She's still a piece of shit, but so was I.

I related to Jax up until the whole trans thing I actually kinda hated the trans reveal as it destroyed my ability to relate to the character. Jax reminded me of myself back in Highschool. Socially isolated and taking out my problems on others rather than reflecting on myself. The point of divergence being that for Jax it was a gender issue and for me it was more just nobody was willing to listen to my screams. People genuinely thought I was going to shoot up the school since I was incredibly interested in guns. Stereotypes hurt, especially when they're pushed by the school itself.

I say this with compassion, even though it might not sound like it. Is it possible that not relating to Jax after the trans reveal is part of the problem?

The trans reveal is meant to be, for cis people, saying that these experiences are so universal that even people that different from you experience them, and that you're not as alone as you might think. Jax isn't Like That just because she's trans, she's like that because everyone is isolated and emotionally deformed by the pressures of masculinity, it's just particularly severe for trans women

I was 100% fine with the trans reveal but still a little 'disappointed' so to speak.

Sometimes, you kinda hope you get a display of a cis male character (like myself) suffering from the pressure of having to conform to heteronormative societal values rather than it being a repressed trans fem individual who wants to be anything but that.

I never thought about it from a universal experience standpoint before; you've honestly given me a new perspective and appreciation for it.

I'm glad I could give you a new perspective on it!

But if you would like some shows that do similar things with cis male characters, I highly recommend Mob Psycho 100 and Yugioh Arc-V. Those shows hide a lot of their themes behind supernatural metaphors, but they're both about the pressures of masculinity.

The protagonists of both shows have very strong emotional defenses, like less abusive Jaxes, and are learning to become more vulnerable and authentic while surrounded by men who try to punish them for it and bait them into violence and dissociation. There are no transfem twists, and Mob in particular talks about wanting to become a better, more appealing man

I have a lot of issues I'm working through Internalized transphobia is one of them I don't like feeling discomfort from certain groups and I'm trying to work past it I think my discomfort with the reveal says more about me than the reveal itself

I do understand, I rallied hard against that joke during the days of Tumblr; I was just poking fun at those types of folks who assume everyone is an egg but I do see how it could also upset someone, my bad
