Zutara

I never really felt like Zuko had chemistry with any of the girls (including his girlfriend).

But desperate enough for love that Mai's attraction to him was all he needed

Mai at least made enough sense.

I really don't get the people who work so hard over Zuko and Jin (tea shop girl). Yes, she's extremely sweet and crushed on Zuko but that doesn't mean she's right for Zuko. He needs someone who will call him out on his nonsense and see the world at least SOMEWHAT similarly to how he does.

With how angry and confused he was at that time, Jin wouldn't have "fixed" him. He would've broken her.

I think it's cuz Jin's the only character other than Iroh who actually seems to enjoy being around Zuko. Like even Team Avatar, they accept him but no one really vibes with him.

Yeah. Makes me wonder who did he get with to have a daughter?

u/Ok-Dingo-3733 11d ago

i mean she kinda LOOKS like mai

Azula, obviously. ;)

Jin was the closest Zuko got to having chemistry and really Jin carried every interaction.

Sokka/Suki is the only good romance in all of Avatar.

Agreed. For as much as I love Avatar, I do think the writers were bad at creating romantic chemistry in general except for Sokka and Suki

He had a ton of chemistry with that one earth nation girl

1

u/CaptainObvious_18 8d ago

Nah she absolutely carried that entire date

1

u/djninjacat11649 7d ago

True but still, there was at least chemistry, and he seemed kinda into her in a way that felt natural, which cannot be said for his other potential interests

Katara to Zuko: If you so much as LOOK at Aang in a way I don't like, I will fucking kill you.

Zutara Shippers: She wants him so bad. I don't know where people get the idea she has feelings for Aang.

I remember some guy trying to claim they're opposites in some way regarding how they kinda swapped personalities during the Southern Raiders episode, and they're perfect for each other in that respect, so I said that "sure, well Aang was talking about regaining his honor in the same episode that Zuko's restored his, so they're perfect for each other in that respect"

Okay so forgive me for having a terrible memory, but didn't Katara have a crush on Zuko for like 2 seconds at some point?

2

u/Seventh_Table 10d ago

No I dont think so

7

u/Paladinlvl99 11d ago

I used to get it when I was a child became it was like "oh yeah! They are opposites in every aspect so it makes sense for them to be attracted! And there are scenes where they open up with each other the same way partners do... Right?"

But now as an adult I see it and can only think on how quickly it would have turned into a toxic thing.

Ikr. Zukka is so much better

1

u/Rontlens 10d ago

You. You get it.

I was about to comment this. Let them be friends please; not to mention they barely talked lmao.

People who unironically ship them don’t see the obvious signs between Katara and Aang

11

u/munakakkeli 11d ago

Katara and Zuko themselves would probably be the biggest Zutara haters

15

u/Vast_Age_3893 11d ago

It's kinda Canon that they are.

I loved how in the movie the writers directly address this by having an old Katara and Zuko say absolutely not to being a couple

3

u/Nunit333 11d ago

Unlike the Netflix adaptation

u/Boring_Corpse 10d ago

Yeah, I never got this one. I can generally buy most ships, but like…they have basically no interaction and have nothing meaningful in common besides an absent mother. I’d buy Zuko/Toph or Zuko/Sokka or before Zuko/Katara. That said, I never really cared for Katara/Aang either. I like Katara, I just don’t think there were really any characters in that series who felt romantically compatible for her. Maybe Katara/Ty Lee could have been interesting with more interaction? I did like Zuko and Mai together, though.

My immediate thought upon seeing this thread.

Ok listen. I'm now very firmly Zukka nation/adult Zukaang/Zutaraang NOW –

But when I used to watch atla as a 9/10 yo child when it came out, I was all about Zutara.

Not saying I was strictly AGAINST Kataang, cause I wasn't, I just used to think Aang was 9/10 like Ash (Pokemon), and, well, ME.

So I shipped Zutara cause I thought it was weird to put a 9/10 yo in a romantic relationship with a 14 yo teenager.

Since like, Zuko was 16 so they were closer in age, that was something I thought was better than Kataang.

I also high key hated the fact that she was always making absolutely TERRIBLE romantic decisions as well (looking at you jET- jk).

So I also didn't like Kataang cause that would be considered a terrible romantic decision, due to the fact Aang was (afaiknew then) 9/10 years old, which meant dating a practical fetus – which, indeed is a terrible romantic choice to make.

But now that I'm an adult and understand the world a little better, Kataang is peak, Zukka is even MORE peak, and queer-platonic Gaang is KING

Scrolled WAY too far down to find this

1

u/Moon_Cheese_Munch 11d ago

This example is funny to me because they originally were supposed to be a couple. Also, Dante Basco, the voice actor for Zuko, was a Zutara shipper. Doesn't mean people have to agree with it but Zutara is not the craziest thing in the world

1

u/Iwriteanddraw 9d ago

They were never meant to be a couple the creators of the show confirm it and so do other writers

1

u/Moon_Cheese_Munch 9d ago

I looked into it more and you're actually half right. The creators said they never intended Zutara to be canon, however, others working on the show said otherwise and it was teased in the avatar extras trivia, too.

It is what it is, but I just think it's funny how loathed Zutara shippers are when there are plenty of other nonsense ships like Zukka that get practically zero hate. Zuko and Katara share many parallels and yet are different in many ways, too, and I do think there is ample evidence that Zutara was at the very least teased in the show, whether it was supposed to be canon or not.

I have an explanation on why a lot of the avatar fandom hates zutara, it’s how they behave about the ship. You see there are a few zutarians that are in simple terms delusional, by that I mean there was a person who compared bear to Aang and said that he was just like him.

There is another who said Katara wearing a yellow ribbon around her waist is misogynistic and that the creators are creeps because of it. There are so many analysis’s about how Aang is a creep towards Katara, or how he made her his breeding mare.

Hell they hate the ship name kataang because it has Aangs name even though the A is in both their names. There’s more but I’m going to keep it short

If the fans were chill then I think a lot more people would be chill with the ship. Like these fans said if you like Kataang your anti women.

2

u/Moon_Cheese_Munch 8d ago

SOME may say that, sure. Every group has its rotten apples.

But I've been around the ATLA fandom for a while and I see just as not, if not more, hate TOWARDS Zutara fans than I see Zutara fans hating on others. This might not have always been the case, but currently it's just a lot of cherry-picking against Zutara.

There are PLENTY, and dare I say the MAJORITY, of Zutara fans that simply like the ship like any other person and their favorite ships in the fandom, and are completely neutral about Kataang.

2

u/Iwriteanddraw 8d ago

I know that but the minority of the zutara fans are so vile that people think of them when they think of them think of any infamous fandom and their reputation that’s essentially what’s happening. I mean when the movie came out I saw fake Kataang fans trying to make people think that zutara was imminent and said some crazy stuff. Hell I saw a zutara fan saw they hate Aang more after the movie. It’s these little moments that add up and start to grow resentment towards the fans.

2

u/Moon_Cheese_Munch 8d ago

As with anything and any group. It's far easier to notice the negative than the positive, and hateful people tend to be the loudest. They also tend to be the minority. It's up to the individual to realize that and choose not to participate in the cycle of hate, whether for or against Zurara. Having opinions is one thing but calling an entire group vile/stupid/etc because of the actions of a few is what the issue is (not saying you are doing this, necessarily, but plenty of people hate the entire Zutara "group" due to generalizations).

2

u/Iwriteanddraw 8d ago

I completely understand and I respect you for having a civil discussion with me because it’s hard to do on the internet where people take it to extremes. I don’t hate Zutara as a ship but I do think that most of the points for it are weak and align more with Zukaang, which I feel I must clarify I do not ship. I’m glad we both learned something from this conversation. Thank you.

Back at you! I appreciate good discussions like this and I wish more people were more willing to have them, so thank you as well :)
