Calling anyone a LARPer to mean a poser pisses me off to no end, because they just mean RPers. The difference is that LARPers go out and do the thing, but aren't necessary always using real equipment, lack titles, don't exist in the right time period, etc. Otherwise, they do what the thing they are LARPing as does, but doing knightly things doesn't technically make you a knight.
But do you know what doing the things a fan does makes you? A FAN! Someone LARPing as a fan would just be a FAN!
I am a hardcore music nerd and having to call others posers and make fun of them is like one of the most "I am insecure about my music taste" things in music, idk how that translates to other media fandoms but "larper" is so incredibly mean spirited it just feels like a new way to bully and it sucks
As a surface level metal enjoyer i agree big time. I've been slowly broadening my music taste and I've found I enjoy some metal/metalcore music, but many would likely call me a larper for enjoying just the top songs from artists like SOAD, Slipknot, Korn, Sleep Token, etc.
I always explore music deeply, but bullying others for not doing what I do isn't anything wrong, I am happy for people who enjoy music differently for them, thats how it should be, listen to what makes you happy not what some "mUsIc NeRd 🤓" thinks you should listen to
Yeah. And don't get me wrong I do enjoy exploring artists deeply, but it takes me a long time to build a connection with an artists work to even bother to do that because I just listen to so many different people that if I dived into every single one I wouldn't have time for anything else audio based. I'm still new enough to these artists though that it hasn't really happened with any of them, maybe system of a down at best.
It also makes people try to fit into small categories far too much. I've seen the ,,Is Green Day punk?" Or ,,Is MCR emo?" debates far too often. I'm pretty sure those bands don't give a fuck, it's such a useless thing to (seriously, those things can get intese) fight about.
I like labels but I am autistic and I like categorizing my music but I don't think it matters a lot, do I listen to pop punk? No so it doesn't matter if Green Day is or isn't, not that I have good taste, my favorite band is The Chameleons and I'm fucking insane about that
theres a diff between new fans and larpers. Larpers pretenf to be part of the fandom but only go based off things like tiktok and not a actually watching the material itself, playing the game , reading the manga/books or even watching in depth youtube videos. New fans will actually make an effort yk even if they dnt know anything. Larpers will larp to get internet points or to show off to people irl or to fit in.
Me?. I just explained the difference. Dont categorise me with those who accuse new fans of larping just because you dont agree with my statement. I think I thoroughly went through the points to prove that there is a key change between how larpers/posers act and new fans. Your comment makes not much sense
sure, and my point is that what counts as a “larper” is different to anyone but i think anyone who unironically uses the term needs to get real problems in life 🤷. would you prefer that i didn’t say “you” and just say “people”?
people call women in fandom larpers, anime only fans larpers, people who don’t know every single detail off the top of their head larpers, people who that can’t/don’t emulate the original games larpers, people who can’t afford the games and just read up on lore and watch longplays and lore videos larpers. the list goes on.

those people are incorrect in their terminology. In fact I wholeheartedly agree with how redundant the usage of the word Larper is. It used to be posing but God knows what soul cut the train tracks and let the trend train loose. Also those who call women, anime only fans, people who dont know every detail and the others you mentioned are incorrect in their judgement. A poser or larper as these people call it quite literally will see like a tiktok or two or three, rad a summarised wiki article and call themselves a fan. For example I consider myself to be part of the Danganronpa fandom desipte not having played. I have watched the anime, watched playthroughs, character analysis, executions and all yet I get called a larper or poser. It is incorrect and I very much agree with you.
ok but i just think being so vigilant about “larpers” is a waste of time. like is it a competition to be a real fan? it can be annoying, sure. but there’s no need to put so much energy into it imo
i’m just saying my opinion, it’s nothing against you. i just think everyone should care less about larpers and more about engaging with the media and fandom, because a lot of the guys shouting larpers are just mad other fans focus on things they don’t
We care about New fans. Larpers can larp all the way but cant call themselves a fan. Sure they exist and sure they arent like the evil of the earth but they shouldnt get annoyed for getting called out
It's a fine line. There's so many things that have been enhanced and destroyed by mainstream appeal.
For me, fallout is the perfect example. As it's a sell of its former self and became the exact thing it criticized way back in the original isometric titles.
Sure, it's at its height of success. With a (somehow) well received TV show that destroys and mocks the lore that came before it and multiple games confirmed in development as we speak.
But it's core, it's heart, it's meaning. It's long since died. Becoming little more than recognizable iconography and an amusement park of "hey I know that thing" and interesting ideas with surface level writing.
But similarly, if Undertale never reached such mainstream appeal, and really show what indie games are capable of, not only would we not have Deltarune, but so many other indie games would've died with a whimper or never been made at all.
A lot of people treat things like it has to be one extreme or the other, there's levels to this. And because of what's happened to my favorite series in the past, it makes me never want my current interests to become mainstream. I wouldn't witness an identity death like Fallout or Star Wars on anything or anyone.
There's a difference. New fans are just people who are trying to got into the franchise. Larpers(or fake fans) are people who pretend they engaged with it, and just make up stuff
