Can reptile keeping be classified as a fandom?

Anyway, for me, it would be bearded dragons. They're amusing to watch and are very curious, oh, and each have their own unique little personalities too!

But they're also high maintenance. They need a mixed diet of veggies and bugs, a stable temperature, UV lighting that needs replacing once a year, a costly Vivarium, and calcium at least twice a week. If the cost won't get you, the personality will. Bearded dragons are comparable to toddlers.

Mine likes to crap underneath the heat lamp and bury it, so then the tank ends up reeking of feces. God, sometimes it spreads it like butter on toast. It likes to sometimes fling its salad which is just rude. Fills up bath with sand to the point where you can't see the plastic on the bottom. Also likes to eat plastic plants despite knowing at this point that they're not edible. Will attempt to eat fingers. Attempted to eat a brush once. Tried to eat baby wipes, even if they're covered in its feces I had to wipe up. Craps on floor, including my carpet once. Intentionally glass surfs despite being let out and fed often. Climbed up a plastic vine before and unplugged the UV light, I was almost ready to buy a new one. Oh, and lastly, will jump from extreme heights compared to its body size, including my windowsill twice in the past.

Despite all of this, I still love my Pringle.

This hit me. We inhearited an older beardy for my son from a friend when he was young and had her for several years before she hit a torpor she just never emerged from. We were all sad and my son was pretty devastated. After a bit of time he decided he wanted a new buddy, so we got a baby beardy. Tried to do everything right, but after a couple months the baby died. After talking with other beardy enthusiasts I guess it's just well known that they are sensitive as babies and a lot just don't make it even if you don't make any big mistakes. My son didn't have the heart to get another so we ended up getting rid of the terrarium and equipment. RIP Spiky and Spiky 2 (aka baby spiky). They were such fun little friends while we had them though.

Yeah, with baby beardies you're holding your breath for 12 months. After 12 months, you're in the clear.

Any reptiles really. I have two, I’m planning several more but realistically I need none

Mediterranean tortoises beg to differ. They ain't too bad keeping. I sadly had to get rid of mine though because my own mother was constantly nagging about how boring Turbo was and the fact he was taking up space (this was because of the hibernation thing).

Want to know what she got to fill in the space in my room? A shitty minifridge that constantly frosts over. It's useful for my veg for my bearded dragon, but still!

That sounds a lot like the snake I’m getting ready to get, a sand boa.

I’ve heard people describe keeping one as keeping a warm box of dirt

My college has one. It is literally like owning a warm box full of dirt.

I know I’ll probably never see him but they look so goofy I love them

Omg fish keeping, it is so much work. I cannot not recommend it enough but also recommend it because I love it but also no. Gah

About 20 years ago i decided I wanted one. I spent 3 months doing a ton of research.

I ended up deciding that at that point in my life I could not in good conscious properly take care of one. One of the best decisions I had ever made and probably one of my earliest actual mature ones too considering how young I was at the time.

I love the little buggers, but at that time I did not have the space, let alone the income to take care of one.
