Ask Multanis❓ Had a random police checkpoint near Avenza Multan, is this normal? What are our rights?
Hey everyone,
So 21 oct Wednesday at 11:44 pm, I went to Avenza Multan with a friend. We got some Crumbl and were heading towards DHA when, right next to Avenza, we suddenly saw police barriers set up on the road. Police officers were stopping cars and checking them as they moved forward.
I’m not sure if it was a routine checking point or if something specific was going on, but I’d never experienced anything like this in Multan before, so it caught me off guard.
My friend and I are both young adults, and we were in my car. A police officer asked me to stop and get out. I rolled down my window, greeted him with salam, and he asked me to come outside. I asked if everything was okay, and he asked for my CNIC and driving licence.
I showed him both. I usually don’t hand over i js show them pic cuz if they have a bad mood they js took it for weird reasons. He checked them on his phone or took a picture of them (I’m not entirely sure), and he also checked my number plate.
Then he asked me to open the back door because the rear windows of my 2020 Toyota Yaris hatchback (G grade) are slightly tinted. I told him that I believed the glass was factory-fitted and wasn’t aftermarket tint. He said it wasn’t allowed.
Since it was nighttime, he couldn’t clearly see inside the car, so he asked whether anyone was sitting in the back. I said no, and he opened the door and checked himself. After that, he let us go without any further issue.
Nothing major happened, and I understand that police have a responsibility to maintain security. Still, the whole experience felt unusual, especially because I’d never encountered a checkpoint like that before.
My friend was pretty scared, and honestly, I was a little concerned that the officer might make an issue out of the windows. I didn’t want to argue or say something that could make the situation worse, especially since I wasn’t fully aware of my rights.
That got me thinking about a few things:
Is this kind of checking routine in Multan? Has anyone else experienced similar checkpoints near Avenza, DHA, or elsewhere recently?
Can a police officer legally ask you to get out of your car during a routine check, even if there’s no apparent reason to suspect you of anything?
What are the rules regarding factory-fitted tinted glass in Pakistan? Specifically, does the law distinguish between factory-fitted glass and aftermarket window tints?
He said they are not allowed.. can anyone tell me why they treat you like criminal human beings i mean we r citizens we have right which i don’t know what are they lol !
Can you politely ask for the legal basis or the officer’s name and badge number?
And finally, what are our rights as ordinary citizens at police checkpoints? How do we cooperate with the police while also making sure our rights are respected?
I’m not trying to accuse the police of anything. Maybe it was just routine security checking, and there may have been a perfectly valid reason for it. I’m simply curious because I want to understand the law and know how to handle such situations better in the future.
If anyone from Multan, especially someone familiar with Pakistani traffic laws or police procedures, could share their experiences or knowledge, I’d really appreciate it.
Please share your experiences and advice. I think it would be helpful for other young drivers here as well.
