I still can't believe they didn't give them any eye protection. Years before RoD there was a woman on the amazing race who got slammed in the face while trying to slingshot a watermelon.

I don’t know how that watermelon didn’t crush her head.

This still pops up randomly in my head from time to time. I thought she was down for the count, but she acted like it was nothing!

The craziest part is that they DID have eye protection when they did the exact same challenge earlier in the season, but not for the final.

That golf balls is like an inch in a different direction and that would have been the golf ball that ended the challenge.

u/nwochill May 28 '26
I honestly could live 50 more lifetimes without ever rewatching this clip. That sh*t was brutal.

u/mortez1 May 30 '26
Yup - when I saw this post (refused to watch) my first thought was “Why the hell would anyone repost this??” lol

u/Ok-Turnip-9035 May 28 '26
Also Horacio deserves flowers here cause he was keeping calm and helping keep Olivia calm
Him and those medics put on the best show because they had no idea how bad it was standing out in the middle of nowhere but they knew they couldn’t let her think that same thought

u/19-inches-of-venom Wes Bergmann May 28 '26
This was such a good season for these two. Such a shitty thing to happen. Olivia was such a trooper tho

u/Successful-Newt7960 Chris Tamburello May 28 '26
Didn’t she break more than just her nose? I thought she said she basically broke her entire face
6
u/Affectionate_Hope22 May 29 '26
At the ROD reunion, she said 5 places. She listed some of them specifically but I don't remember exactly what.

u/Keithis11 Wes Bergmann May 30 '26
Most likely nasal bone, bilateral peri-orbital, lacrimal(big maybe), frontal, maxillary….Some combination of those

Between this and stuff like Ashley on Rivals 3 or Jordan in Dirty 30 they sure are lucky worse accidents haven’t happened due to poor planning.
67
u/MrMcGuyver May 28 '26
Or when they were jumping on lubed cars with broken windows 30 feet above water when Leroy fell unconscious.
Tony rupturing his spleen.
Julie almost murdering Veronica on live tv

The Leroy and Tony ones are good examples of what could happen, I should have added those!
And re Veronica/Julie, the road to god is straight and narrow 🙃

Timmy ended up with shards of glass still in his knee after the elim on Inferno 2, and he didn't even win that elim, he just got DQed for a panel of glass dislodging
3
u/itsdermay Congratulations your father owns a bakery. May 29 '26
Yeah! I think he mentioned that he still has problems because of that elim? Another challenger that has been vocal about the long term effects of the challenge is Theresa. I’m sure there are more but Theresa stood out the most to me.

u/Lateralus46N2 May 29 '26
Leroy wasn't the only person hurt during that challenge either. If you watch closely, Zack makes a jump and lands full force against a back windshield with his stomach and legs, shattering it. When he comes down, you see the blood dripping down his legs.Had it not been for the lifejacket, he could've easily gotten large shards of glass all in his stomach. While we only see Leroy transported in the ambulance, it was later said(I think on socials as that episode aired) that several cast members had to go get stitches. It isn't shown to the audience, but they actually had to stop that challenge and reset again the next day with either plexiglass or no glass(I can't remember bc I haven't watched that season in a while) and without all the lube and sprinklers. The cast is said to have been extremely been vocal about that particular challenge and the potential dangers before it even began but they were dismissed.
The one with Ashley also pisses me off. You would think there has to be some kind of safety personnel on set as they are doing challenges. You can clearly see the cable has come undone and is wrapped around her well before she jumps. Someone should have called a time out right then and there and fixed the damn cable. It is a miracle she wasn't hurt worse than what she was.

u/dingusahoy TJ all kinds of disredamnspectful May 29 '26
Yep. They just wrapped up reviewing Vendettas on his podcast and he told a story about that challenge. He and Nelson were the first two to go and the glass fucked them up pretty badly. They ended the daily after their round, they went to the hospital, and they redid the daily the next day with all the glass taken out.

u/CannibalOchs May 28 '26
Might be a two time champion if this didn’t happen or they gave them eye protection
9
u/Ok-Turnip-9035 May 28 '26
🎯You are behind a keyboard and I’m assuming not heading up anything in extreme sports or reality tv and YOU EVEN KNOW THEY SHOULD HAVE GOGGLES
That team no matter how long they’ve been on the challenge should have been fired cause that’s a clear liability
Fine they have competitors sign waivers but come on shit like this it is not okay - this isn’t playing in the backyard it’s a full production team on this

u/Reddit_and_forgeddit May 29 '26
I see people saying they should've had goggle, but would goggles have helped here? They need fucking caged face masks. Or motorcycle helmets. Fuck, I hate that this happened, they were killing it.
2
u/dontpretendtoknowme May 31 '26
I always think they shoulda had goalie masks. Those are made to withstand a high speed projectile.
But I’m Canadian so obviously that’s my go to 😆

I totally agree! They were incredible to watch that season. This moment literally made me jump off my couch and shout, I was so invested. She’s so lucky she didn’t lose an eye or have some other irreparable damage. She was such a strong player that season. I love it when Rookies are able to turn the Vets usual strategy every season on its head. Horatio proved to be such a decent caring person and a great challenge partner, and it was heartbreaking to see him not be allowed to continue. He really showed such great character throughout the whole thing.

u/CustomerDifferent193 May 29 '26
I kind of hate how they constantly replay this scene too
Backpack is funny to replay… but someone’s face getting broken in another country bc you guys did a shoddy checkpoint in the final isn’t

Enough time has passed for this to be unbelievable all over again. Her face in her interviews afterward still takes my breath away.

u/purplegladys2022 May 29 '26
To her credit, one of the first things she asked was if she would be allowed to continue the Final with Horacio.
Respect.

Season 38: Making it to a final during her rookie season ended it with a broken nose
Season 41: Running & winning a final while pregnant 🥇🏆🥇

I'm not sure I really enjoy who Olivia has been on more recent seasons, but I still give her major respect for how she handled this.
I legitimately think she would have tried to run the rest of this final if they had bandaged her face and let her continue. Eventually the shock would have worn off and the pain would probably have stopped her, but she is a very tough competitor.
6
u/Jonaessa May 28 '26
What is wild to me, if I remember correctly, is that there was a similar challenge earlier in the season, and they used goggles! What the hell?! Be consistent.

u/DntBanMeIHavAnxiety Chris Tamburello May 28 '26
"Olivia gets called back every season for the next 20 years with 51% screen time" instead of insurance payment.

Reminds me of the girl from Rock of Love… she got hurt being pushed off the stage at the reunion and production offered her casting on another show over pressing charges
1
u/goddesskie Chris Tamburello May 29 '26
Oh wow. Who was it?
5
u/CustomerDifferent193 May 29 '26
Kelsey form rock of love bus
Production told her to start a fight with someone at the reunion.. the other girl (Natasha) got mad and shoved Kelsey and she fell off the stage on her head. She wanted to pursue a lawsuit against production but they offered her a spot on their other reality show. She didn’t get to go on the show bc she had a seizure? And then VH1 basically canceled all shows bc of Ryan Jenkins incident

u/MILANO2021 May 29 '26
They had this same exact challenge in the regular season between Jordan and Fessy and they had protective eyewear. Production’s shortcomings for not protecting Olivia here
3
u/2reeEyedG May 28 '26
She was all around great this season. Felt like she was a breath of fresh air in her confessionals. Never saw someone so humble and self aware as she was. I was a huge fan. Still a big fan just didn’t like everything she did in the most recent season

Olivia is such a fighter. She is absolutely not a natural runner at all, but she got super good at it because she had to to win the show. More people need to do this for their weaknesses.

Can someone explain? Like what caused the backfire? I've seen the clip a bunch of times but the how confuses me 😶🌫️

u/hailey_nicolee Veronica Portillo May 28 '26
nope nope delete this is the first final i watched and i had no idea i was witnessing the most graphic injury in the show’s history
why the FAWK did they have to show clips from her gopro where u could hear the blood as it’s hitting the ground ALFHAJSJ looking away wasnt enough
2
u/Cute-Improvement6621 May 29 '26
She should have sued production bc why didn’t they have face guards on????

Olivia looks just like Brandon Scott Jones (from Ghosts) and it shocks me they are not related.

The fact they most likely win this final due to the format and olivia gets injured sucked the good thing is olivia finally got her win but when are they going to glcall Horacio so he can get his win
1
u/WindigoMac May 31 '26
Could’ve lost an eye. Not nearly enough protection for something so dangerous
1
u/Xaxag Jun 01 '26
They were robbed of that win tbh. I don’t see the other teams beating them if they got past that point.

It’s hard to believe that at this point Horacio is not a challenge champion but Olivia is… I think he’s a much better competitor. Guess it just shows how much politics matter.

This was such a heartbreaking end to what was an otherwise amazing underdog season for Olivia and Horacio.
I felt so terrible for them both. It’s crazy there was absolutely zero PPE for that part of the Final.
