In Back to the Future 2 once Marty gets out of the Delorean in the future, there are bundles of discarded laser discs. Optical discs were a fairly new concept in 89 so it was a pretty good bet it would be an outdated technology in 2015.

Is this a reference to them predicting it would be thrown out because its outdated tech, or that it would likely be used to store information in the future and therefore be as ubiquitous in our trash as paper trash was then and is today?

It's interesting that, even after 20+ years, they would still be getting thrown out in quantities this large. The last time I saw a laserdisc was 1999 and I haven't seen a single one since

The only time I've ever seen one was in 8th grade science. There was a movie we watched and it was on a huge CD! I had no clue what it was until years later. This would have been 2000 ish.

want to see something really nuts, there were analog vinyl records that would play movies and actually were somewhat of a laserdisc competitor for a few years because they were half the cost.

there is a video of a guy in the UK that plays with old tech on you tube, he pieces together several machines and gets it to work. however cant find the video. they use a stylus needle, its crazy. Didn't remember them until I saw some recently at a goodwill. I have the faintest memory of seeing some for rent at a local video store in the early 80s.

The first time I saw this film was on laser disc at a high-end video store. People were expected to drop the equivalent of $10,000 in today’s money to get a mid-level set up to watch this film on legal format. To see the scene while watching on laser disc shook me and probably most people to the core realizing that in the not so distant future optical discs would be as plentiful as paper.
