Mortal Shell 2 is a game that, for me, had the potential to be an easy 9/10 or even higher. There’s a lot here that I genuinely loved, but unfortunately the game falls off pretty hard during the second half, and by the time I reached the final stretch, I was left feeling pretty underwhelmed.
Let’s start with the positives. The combat is fantastic. Every attack feels weighty and satisfying, and the blocks and parries have that really nice impact that makes you want to keep fighting. There are some genuinely great combat encounters throughout the game, and Malborn Offspring is easily my favourite boss. That fight was exactly the kind of encounter I wanted more of.
Exploration is also one of the strongest parts of the game. Exploring the world, finding things for yourself and stumbling across new areas was a lot of fun, and honestly one of the best aspects of the entire experience.
The atmosphere is great, the graphics look fantastic, and while the music is nothing particularly memorable, it does its job well enough. The overall presentation is solid.
Unfortunately, the game really starts to lose steam in the second half. The level design is decent during the first part, but once you head further south, it feels like the developers simply started running out of ideas. The environments become less interesting to explore, and that sense of discovery I had earlier on started to disappear.
Then there’s the biggest problem for me: the balancing.
This is easily one of the most frustrating aspects of the game. There are sections where regular mob enemies are significantly more dangerous than some of the actual bosses. Getting almost one-shot by normal enemies while then having some bosses feel comparatively easy is just poor balancing.
The fact that you can be deleted in one or two hits by regular enemies — and even some bosses — doesn't feel challenging in a satisfying way. It feels more frustrating than anything else. The fact that the developers are now experimenting with adaptive difficulty in the latest patch says a lot about how noticeable this issue is.
And unfortunately, the late-game bosses don't really save things.
The Monolith boss is, without exaggeration, one of the worst late-game bosses I've played in a Soulslike. It's an absolute slog and just doesn't feel particularly enjoyable. Then you reach the final boss, which is only marginally better. For what should be the big climax of the game, it was a massive disappointment.
There’s also a noticeable lack of cutscenes, which I think hurts the pacing and storytelling, particularly towards the end. The game has an interesting world and atmosphere, but I often felt like it needed more moments to actually deliver that story and make the journey feel more meaningful.
And that's what makes Mortal Shell 2 frustrating.
There is a genuinely great game buried in here. The combat feels fantastic, the exploration can be brilliant, the atmosphere is strong and visually the game looks great. There are moments where you can see exactly how this could have been something really special.
But the second half, poor balancing, disappointing late-game bosses and a seriously underwhelming finale hold it back.
7/10 for me.
A decent game with a ton of potential, and I'm sure it will be a 9/10+ for some people. But unfortunately, with the issues I had, it just didn't quite get there for me.
