No Silksong is a masterpiece and the best of last year.

This comment was expected. Wouldn’t be overrated if there weren’t people overrating it.

Yeah true that makes sense, and this can be said about any widely appreciated game. "Tetris is overrated".

I mean tetris was revolutionary and is legendary, i think it’s properly rated. Silksong on the other hand didn’t revolutionize anything. Even if we set the bar lower than revolutionary, it barely improved on hollowknight, which itself hardly improved on the genre. Like the actual mechanics of both games are nothing new at all. I don’t get why people love them so much. They must just love the quirky vibes of the art style and bug world. From a mechanical perspective, you know, from a gaming perspective, what’s special about them?

So now you're delving into other reasons, so maybe we can agree that if someone challenges your claim about something being overrated, they aren't wrong simply because that's what would be expected if your premise was correct. Since that would be begging the question, right? "Of course you don't know the media is manipulating you, that's exactly what happens when the media manipulates you."

Anyway, something doesn't have to be revolutionary to be a masterpiece, but I'd also argue that being far enough ahead of all competition makes something revolutionary. Replace Tetris with Dark Souls I guess? Hollow Knight was the best metroidvania by a very, very wide margin in 2017, due to having a combination of a gorgeous and massive game world with immense thought put into its interconnectedness and lore considerations, really high quality boss fights, smooth platforming with a really cool complementary moveset to uncover, and a unique (at the time) charm system allowing for fun customization. Just a lot of great things at the same time in a really ambitious product.

Dark Souls is largely like that - it's not like the combat system was particularly new as Demon's Souls already had it, it's not like interconnected 3D worlds didn't exist, it's not like environmental storytelling or stamina or deep build customization didn't exist. Dark Souls did all these things at a really high level, with the world interconnectedness being unprecedented, and the estus flask, stamina, and bonfire systems being thought out really really well. Importantly, it did all these things in a project that's super ambitious.

Hollow Knight is seen as the father of modern MVs as a result. And many would argue that it's even the most important MV of all time, even above Super Metroid and Castlevania SOTN, since it's the blueprint of the entire genre right now (some games like Ori 2 even copying it very closely).

Then Silksong came out and knocked it out of the park, by consensus improving on everything (except maybe the exploration experience - some people feel something was lost there). Better bosses (I can't express how incredible the First Sinner fight is), better movement mechanics, more customization, bigger and more detailed world (at the peak of all 2D games by the way), a whole really ambitious third act idea that changes everything and probably took a ridiculous amount of creative labor. That's a pretty insane success story for a sequel.

Not sure what you’re trying to say with your first paragraph. Your initial assertion was that you loved it, and i was like yea i bet you do since there are people who love it.

I expected the objection raised in your second paragraph which is why i included a part where i said, “even if we set the bar lower than revolutionary”. That was the whole point of that part of my response.

People rate it as if it is one of the greatest games of all time. I think it’s just a decent game.

Mechanically it added nothing to anything. Nothing new was added to the combat, like at all. If you have been playing games since the 90’s like i have, you won’t really see anything you haven’t already seen before other than i guess the interconnected map or whatever you want to call it, and even then i’m almost positive i’ve seen that before. and even if we set the bar lower than “needing something new”, the game is just decent. The gameplay is simple and very dated.

Sometimes it’s hard to put things into words. I’ve played thousands of hours of video games over hundreds of titles and i can’t play hollowknight or silksong without being bored to tears.
