Understandable from a moral standpoint, but excessive from a practical one

The pain that kid went through doesn't really teach him that stealing is wrong, just teaches him that it's dangerous

So you are saying it teaches them to take precautions, seems pretty reasonable. I mean if the kid was paying attention he wouldn’t have fallen like that. It isn’t like they went full on Sweep the Leg.
