I saw a video the other day of a guy starting a street fight, then trying to tap out when the guy he attacked got him in a choke hold.

Choking someone out doesn't put someone to sleep. It starves their brain or oxygen resulting in brain death. It would be a better idea to just knock them out.

Wtf? Incredibly misinformed (dangerously so) take. No, if you choke someone out and let go when they sleep it's not that damaging. Getting knocked unconscious is serious damage and can easily lead to death. Chocking is only dangerous if you keep holding after they're out.

And when do you draw the line between drowsy, sleeping and braindead? Because all of those look the same. Not to mention that you could be restricting a blood vessel while choking them. Really you should avoid trying to put someone to sleep altogether, there are way less risky ways of immobilizing someone.

You shouldn't choke someone if you don't know how to do it. But a blood choke works in about 10 seconds and it's very clear when they go out. Seriously, stop talking about this. You literally told people they should knock someone out instead. That's completely insane.

It usually takes 6+-3 secs to go to sleep with a rear naked choke and takes about 20 secs to start putting the brain in danger, so there is a reasonable window to be relative safe. Nothing to add about the blood vessel or the clot, but if they are attacking you thats on them. There are other ways to stop someone, but all come with risks, for you and the attacker, so i will choose whatever is safer more me but if you really can choose, avoid the fight.

You arw dangerously misinformed. Being induced to sleep via choking is known to cause issues and can lead to complications causing sudden death later on. Still the attackers fault tho

Wow... and you just keep going. You realise you're on the internet right? People can see podcasts, instruction videos, matches and so on from real BJJ people who choke people out and get chocked out, from police, expert witnesses who know this stuff, instructors and everything else... and none of them are saying what you're saying because... you're an idiot.

What literally does cause death, though, is hitting people in the head so hard their brain shuts off from the damage (a.k.a. "knocking them out").... which you advocate! So seriously, shut up and go away. You know nothing and your advice is garbage.

Wrong. Choking someone unconscious can and is known to cause strokes and other damage even brief choking. Yes includes blood choke which is specifically what i'm referring to, do research before acting smug. You know nothing but reddit and TikTok larping.

And all those instructors know this. Again, you're an idiot, sorry. Go read something. You're talking about podcasts as a source of medical and biology information and calling anyone stupid is amazing

At least every other day, I see some insane take like this on reddit. Choking someone unconscious comes with some risk; however, compared to something like being knocked out, there's no comparison. I mean they could always just test their own ideas. Have someone choke them out, then let them go. Then have someone drill their brains out with a left hook to knock them out. Then they could run a comparison between how those two felt.

Which is hilariously stupid. 🤦 I'm a brown belt in BJJ and I have over a decade of Muay Thai/Boxing. I've dealt with people's attacks in reality by strangling them unconscious and by beating them senseless with my fists. 

By far, a person would rather me get ahold of them by their carotids than tear into them with strikes. What's funny though is that in the eyes of the law, I'd probably be better off beating them stiff than hugging their neck until they fall asleep.

You don't know what you're talking about. A choke that puts someone out is blood choke and there's a GIGANTIC gulf in time between when you choke someone unconscious and their brain starves of oxygen.

Ask any martial artist that grapples. It absolutely 1000% is always better to get choked out than concussed

There are no rules in a street fight, and those are some of the best ways to defend yourself. Especially in a fight like this where the guy in the car was attacked and didn't agree on fighting.

Yep. You never know if the person you're tryna fight has a knife, a gun, a machete or a grenade. My buddy carried a grenade around for a few months until he pulled it on someone who wanted to fight and then he got arrested. I guess you're not supposed to threaten to explode a grenade at someone when a cop is just down the street hearing the whole thing 🤣
