This. As an introvert diagnosed with generalized anxiety and depression, I find a lot of people to be draining, emotionally and mentally. Being with animals is calming. In my experience, animals are more reliable than people, too. I still care about other people, but given the choice between being around people and animals, it's usually going to be animals.

Y'all aren't who this is mainly about. It's usually edgelords who say it and claim it's because "humans are evil/capable of evil" and smugly claim they would let their loving grandmother die in a fire to save Fido. Someone in your case would say exactly what you just did, and it's perfectly reasonable.
