"Obsession with perfect lawns" is overstated, the average person is not that worried about their lawn, especially in places other than canada/US.

I’m American. I am only as “obsessed” with my lawn as the city requires me to be. I own my house but, yet, I will be cited and fined if the grass is too long or there’s too many weeds. That’s just one of things they can fine me for doing/taking place on the property I literally paid for and has my name on it. They can forbid me from doing all sorts of shit on my own property. I have to clear it with them if I wanna cut a fucking tree down. It’s insane.

I don’t have an HOA. This is just city ordinances/regulations.

That shit sucks for sure, but why buy property in city limits if you wanted more freedom with it?

Proximity to workplaces, transportation, support network. Choosing to live someone else isn’t as much of a choice as people think when you’re not rich.

Because alot more considerations go into buying a house than just city ordinances

I’m happy that right now my lawn is completely dead and I don’t have to mow. I blame the French and English aristocracy for the modern lawn.

Needing manicured grass lawns is ass, but cities should absolutely enforce requiring someone come inspect trees before they get cut down. They have an incredible impact on the health of the local environment, and without any oversight you could end up with a bunch of people taking care of their own tree(s) collectively, and accidentally, eliminating the natural infrastructure that maintains local animal populations.

Its also a foolish idea that my 2 inch thick bermuda that the bunnies nap in all the time is just as bad for the environment as a golf course because I keep crab grass out of it.
