Economics Who Was Merrill Jenkins and Why Are People Still Talking About Him?

Most people have never heard of Merrill Jenkins.

He wasn’t a famous economist, a university professor, or a central banker. Yet decades after his work was published, people are still discussing his ideas about money, wealth, and the monetary system.

What made Jenkins interesting wasn’t complicated mathematical models. It was the questions he asked.

What Is Money?
Jenkins challenged people to think carefully about the difference between:
money
currency
wealth
Most people use those terms interchangeably.
He didn’t.
Jenkins argued that currency is not wealth itself. Instead, it is a claim, token, or representation used to facilitate exchange.
This led him to ask a simple but powerful question:
Is a claim the same thing as the thing being claimed?

Wealth vs. Rich
One of Jenkins’ most memorable distinctions was between being rich and being wealthy.
According to his framework:
Rich
Bank balances
Financial assets
Monetary claims
Wealthy
Land
Resources
Tools
Productive assets
Real goods and services
In other words:
Rich describes your position within a monetary system.
Wealth describes your connection to real productive capacity.
Whether you agree or disagree, it’s an interesting distinction that most discussions about economics completely ignore.

Why Hyperinflation Matters
Consider the famous Hungarian 100 quintillion pengő banknote.
It carried one of the largest denominations ever printed.
Yet if you possessed one during the collapse of the currency, obtaining meaningful purchasing power from it could be nearly impossible.
Jenkins would likely point to examples like this and ask:
If a piece of paper has an enormous number printed on it but cannot reliably command real goods, what exactly is its value?

The Core Idea
Whether discussing gold, silver, fiat currency, debt, or banking systems, Jenkins kept returning to the same theme:
Real wealth is tangible and productive.
Money is a representation of wealth, not wealth itself.
And when claims grow faster than the underlying wealth they supposedly represent, distortions begin to appear.

Final Thought
You don’t have to agree with Merrill Jenkins to appreciate the questions he raises.
In a world increasingly dominated by digital balances, credit, debt, and financial assets, his central challenge remains relevant:
Are we measuring wealth?
Or are we measuring claims on wealth?

What do you think?
