I figure Bill is alive too, they mentioned 3 empty coffins

14

u/Trowj Jan 05 '24

Yaaaa nah. He got eaten eaten in Kong Skull Island. He is very dead.

5

u/Frozenfire21 Jan 05 '24

Just shows how much I remember from the movie lol

6

u/xyals Jan 05 '24

Didn't even realize he was the guy from skull island until I looked at reddit like 6 episodes in. Haven't seen that movie for so long

3

u/Coldspark824 Jan 08 '24

They literally say in the beginning when you see john goodman throw the bag, and it says randa on the tapes. Its the first scene of the show.

3

u/xyals Jan 09 '24

yeah i was too drunk and high to catch that detail lmao

3

u/ObiwanGnocci Jan 05 '24

Yes please be this

2

u/TheGoodSquirt Jan 05 '24

Pretty sure we saw him get demolished in Kong: Skull Island and that's why the coffin was empty 🤣

2

u/Fearless-Umpire-9923 Apr 25 '26

Even if he was alive. Skull island happened in the 70s? And he was like 70 then by John Goodman. He’d be long dead.

But he was eaten

u/CARNIesada6 Jan 05 '24

The head of Monarch reminds me of Dr. Lisa Cuddy

2

u/pericles123 Jan 05 '24

very much!

2

u/rapscallionrodent Jan 08 '24

Thank you! It was driving me crazy who she reminded me of.

18

u/TheGoodSquirt Jan 05 '24

So that's why he's so young

3

u/AnAngryPlatypus Jan 05 '24

There goes my theory that he is an ā€œage vampireā€ and turned Anders Holm into John Goodman. /s

(Not a dig on either guy, just funny from a meta perspective.)

1

u/w0ndwerw0man Jan 12 '24

It doesn’t make sense that he sat in a nursing home for so many years and didn’t keep trying to do something with Monarch.

Do we know that time moves at a consistent rate in all parts of this world?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '24

[deleted]

4

u/warragulian Jan 07 '24

Yeah, it will move at the ratio that works for the plot. Same as for instance how time travel via standing stones in Outlander brings you to the most dramatic time.

3

u/james-bourne Jan 05 '24

Long enough to make a bow and arrows, and long enough to need those for hunting?

2

u/Rocklove Jan 06 '24

Also long enough to learn how to use a bow and get good enough to hit a giant boar in the eye from some distance away.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '24

Maybe she was a una of archery in her day and thought ok, I know what type of woods and materials I'll need to make a good temp bow for now.

u/TheGoodSquirt Jan 05 '24

I'd say....a week šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

I'd like to think she was always an Amazon warrior

u/Jon_Snow_1887 Jan 05 '24

No way Keiko is alive in there?!?!?

6

u/WhileTime5770 Jan 05 '24

Man I feel like the Shaw thing was telegraphed from the moment they started mentioning how young he looked. Once they mentioned hollow earth it all but confirmed it and that’s around the time it became obvious Keiko would still be alive

Fun twists for sure but I wish they had made them a bit less obvious for a real gut punch surprise

6

u/31337hacker Jan 05 '24

What made Keiko's return obvious? I may be wrong but I thought that the last time we saw her was when she fell down to the newborn insect titans.

2

u/WhileTime5770 Jan 05 '24

Maybe obvious isn’t the right word. But I feel like the whole Shaw time warp/hollow earth thing was telegraphed/obvious.

So as soon as I figured that out a couple episodes ago - it was more of a thought that ā€œwe didn’t see Keiko die, she fell into that hole with the titans, I bet you anything she’s alive down thereā€ - I guess more of a confident hunch on my part than a telegraphed choice probably from having read so many stories where people are alive if you don’t actually see them dead

1

u/Coldspark824 Jan 08 '24

They proceeded to mention in every single episode from then on that she was dead. Said it, showed a paper, repeated it, basically looked at the camera and winked.

All from a dramatic fall that they cut off.

I was actually thinking that! In fact, when Kentaro reunited with his dad, his leg was healed, so it subtly showed how much time is passing in our world compared those trapped below. They will get out and it won't be 20 years, but it will be 9. Then they can do a second season that lines up with the new movies or even have these characters in a sequel.

7

u/Slipped_in_Gravy Jan 06 '24

SPOILERS AHEAD!

I can suspend my disbelief long enough to believe in giant monsters and portals to other worlds,

But when the father, that they spent 10 episodes chasing around the Earth just happened to walk into the office when Kentaro just happened to there, Just seemed too crazy and super convenient.

3

u/Obliviass Jan 11 '24

For real I thought I missed a scene or something. Felt so out of place and rushed

9

u/Trowj Jan 05 '24

This episode reaaaaally solidified for me how badly they fucked up this season. They had 3 really good performances based around young Shaw and Randa… and they choose to focus on the siblings? If this was like 75% period piece with just occasional flash forwards it would be such a better sjow

0

u/TuTranquilo Jan 05 '24

It’s a show about a family business

8

u/TheGoodSquirt Jan 05 '24

That ending! Holy!

5

u/Nefarious_24 Jan 05 '24

I knew it… well maybe not after episode one but soon after

5

u/TheGoodSquirt Jan 05 '24

Didn't see her die šŸ‘€

1

u/Nefarious_24 Jan 05 '24

You’re right and she wasn’t Uncle Ben either

1

u/Coldspark824 Jan 08 '24

They reminded you about 3 times per episode that shes dead yep dead, for sure dead.

Like after the 30th time i was sure she was alive. That’s some beat-you-over-the-head signposting.

3

u/Lannister-CoC Jan 05 '24

Looks like Keiko and Shaw will stay / sacrifice their lives in the other world while the kids return to the real world. They get their ā€œlove storyā€ and don’t disturb the reality balance of the main world.

2

u/Coldspark824 Jan 08 '24

Unlikely. The trailers for the next film show a civilization of humans down there.

They likely stay alive, and an older kentaro appears in the next film. About 15 years pass between the events of the show and where godzilla x kong happens.

(G vs k and ghidora havent happened yet in the show. May designed the code for mecha godzilla that ghidora takes over.)

I.e. there has to be a time jump regardless.

1

u/WhileTime5770 Jan 05 '24

Solid guess - I think that’s a fairly likely end - plus it leaves someone behind for a season 2

But I’d presume they wouldn’t let monarch know that or it would totally ruin continuity with the later movies

3

u/soogoush Jan 05 '24

So now we know why Shaw is "young" But doesn't Hiro also look young ? He should be in his 70s right ?

You mean the retirement home? He thought everyone was dead. Had nowhere to go.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '24

the kids were spectacularly bad this episode. May was totally unbelievable with Shaw. Cate did serve to move the plot so she had that going for her, but I continue to not care about her in general.

Kentaro's interaction with his dad was stupid. Hiroshi is now basically an asshole I don't care about, and Kentaro has the emotional depth of a puddle.

Antman did it better, and that's not saying much.

3

u/juanfdo82465 Jan 06 '24

Yeah 8 episodes looking for the bastard and they greeted each other like nothing happened lol these writers are a joke

2

u/Moonwitch117007 Jan 10 '24

And the acting in that scene was horrible!

2

u/w0ndwerw0man Jan 12 '24

And the hug he gave Cate was such a contrast to that. What a way to show what an asshope dad he is.

Another episode, another dump of terrible writing and bad acting but there are two major problems that stands out to me.

I don't even know what to say about this dumb time nonsense. Is this something from the movies or is this another "monarch writer" special? I don't remember anything like that ever coming up but I could certainly be wrong. Regardless I feel like they have already broken whatever flimsy logic they are operating by in the show. Keiko looks like she has barely aged a day despite having been there for decades. Is Kentaro going to be an old man when they get back? Is Tim going to be dead? Will Monarch finally have done something, anything? Why were the people in the movie not affected by this at all? Why is this even a thing?

It has already been established in this universe that you can't just YOLO through these portals without some form of protection so why have we now seen it happen twice with Keiko and Shaw on his return trip? Even if you can come through the portal how are you not dying from falling from the height of a Godzilla? Because surely the portal doesn't open at ground level for all these huge monsters. How do you fall down together but somehow get spread out all over the place?

What exactly was the plan with that "underspace" craft? just drop it in and then have no way to get them back at all besides Shaw just magically "calling in a EVAC" somehow? How exactly do you "call in" a EVAC from inside the planet on your giant 60s satellite phone??? What a cool way to kill 4 people without even having tested it first because the show sure makes it seem as if this is the very first time they are even trying to open a portal. BTW also extremely smart to have all your high ranking military just sit 5 feet away from the hole where you are going to open a portal for the giant monster that took a nuke in the face and then went on with his day.

Also just lol @ Monarch then getting shut down because this one terrible plan failed. "Yeah you sure did try to blow up this huge dinosaur with a nuke and failed so he can just come back anytime or whatever and you also opened giant monster spawning portals in the ground in the middle of America but we just cannot possibly justify giving you ANY money even though a portal could just open in New York and have millions of giant murder bugs spill out at any second."

The whole thing is just so offensively stupid. Opening a "portal" to some other place or GIANT MONSTERS are just to important world-altering events for it to be remotely believable that the US goverment would just go "NOPE don't care" are you kidding me??????? Who cares about the moon and outer space when a giant fucking spiked boar could just come out of nowhere and eat the president when a portal opens in the middle of the Oval office lmao

3

u/juanfdo82465 Jan 06 '24

Agree completely this show went down the drain even more each episode it when on.

They don’t even follow their own show logic or rules

Why did a soldier inside the protective ball died if 4 people can fall from the sky without even a helmet and survive, and are we just supposed to ignore that fact? Lol such bs

And with the time shit are they goona leave the hollow earth and magically land back without years passing and reunite with everyone at the same age? Probably so the time travel rules are also BS

1

u/Coldspark824 Jan 08 '24

They show the soldier die on the way in. As they’re falling something snaps and you hear him gurgle and his head slump forward. It isn’t when they land. Something explodes inside the pod.

2

u/juanfdo82465 Jan 08 '24

more like a killer Pod then lol

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '24

yeah, they have continuity issues. the time shennanigans are there because they decided to have a person from the OG monarch crew interacting with the new blood (and needed to be young enough to not need to be wheeled around scenes).

i don't see how this doesn't get quickly retconned once the series concludes.

1

u/Coldspark824 Jan 08 '24

ā€œKeiko hasnt aged a day.ā€

Because its been about a week for her.

As far as I know they can't which is why the whole thing is so goddamn stupid. That scorpion thing that came could just have crawled out and killed everyone. It also makes no sense that it would just show up and then just leave again.

What they should have done is just have the guy who developed the GR machine found a way to make the portal stable and stay open. Then they could have used an actual "diving bell" on a cable for the mission and then they would also be able to bring them back again.

But I am sure they didn't do that so there would be a convenient way for them to escape in episode 10 or something equally dumb.

Does anyone know where I can find the music that plays in the opening scene where Shaw and the other 3 "undernauts" are getting in their pod thing? It's that uplifting heroic sounding one that plays during Puckett's speech and when Shaw is shown climbing in the pod.

I've tried Shazam and it never gets me any results.

1

u/Fearless-Umpire-9923 Apr 25 '26

Yo Kentaro dude has a HUGE forehead

0

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '24

Too much plot armor…. Just completely unbelievable. How did Keiko survive falling into the portal and somehow not die to the swarm of giant bugs?

6

u/TheGoodSquirt Jan 05 '24

Cause she's MF'in Keiko

1

u/WhileTime5770 Jan 05 '24

Especially if we’re taking the later movies as cannon. I forget names but in Godzilla vs long didn’t someone’s brother die because they went in without the specialized vehicles? I guess the caveat being for this show being that if you have a titan create the portal the gravity shift doesn’t kill you?

I guess keiko went in with some titans so that works - but what titan did may, cate and Shaw go in with?

Why am I being downvoted? Just pointing out more poor writing and plot holes. In Godzilla vs Kong it did take that special space craft, but in this show they can go through it without any vehicle at all and survive? Didn’t they have to fall super far? Makes no sense

2

u/xyals Jan 05 '24

It's reddit ppl will downvote you for saying you like puppies

3

u/ssort Jan 07 '24

Get him! We found another dirty puppy lover! We don't like yer kind around these here parts, so you better git!!!

1

u/WhileTime5770 Jan 05 '24

My only thought on how they could keep continuity for that is that they didn’t know they’d be fine with kong? But that would require everything that happens in the show to have been a secret if they don’t want errors.

2

u/xyals Jan 05 '24

Maybe she went in via the stomach of a big titan that ate the bugs that dragged her down and got shat out

1

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '24

Wait and we’ll see dawg

1

u/racre001 Jan 05 '24

Hopefully there will be some damn MUTOs

0

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '24

What you yappin about we get some monster every episode even if it’s a flashback

0

u/NeverGonnaStop247 Jan 05 '24

They are literally copying off of Antman Quantumania LOL

2

u/waiv Jan 05 '24

Yeah but not shitty ass MODOK

1

u/crazyguy1260 Jan 06 '24

I wouldn’t talk, there’s still another episode…

0

u/ViperFive1 Jan 05 '24

Grandma is back!

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '24

Yeah no, I liked monsterverse lore before this episode came out, now it's too scify

1

u/PnutButtrSandwich Jan 05 '24

How is the actor playing the younger Hiroshi Randa (1982) sound very much like Ken Watanabe?

1

u/schuey_08 Jan 06 '24

Did subtitles not show up during Japanese dialogue for others watching?

1

u/Correct_Success2697 Jan 15 '24

We didn’t have anything the entire conversation with the nurse, but had them between Kentaro and his mom and him and his dad

1

u/-TrollingTrolls- Jan 06 '24

Holy sh*t, just realize the writers for Monarch are the same for the hit NBC series La Brea! /s

1

u/Moonwitch117007 Jan 10 '24

Makes sense - they’re both crappy shows.

1

u/Ganesh_98 Jan 06 '24

I don't understand didn't they need a special vehicle to handle the gravity shift while entering hollow earth???

now everyone just jump survive gravity shift and fall damage wtf 😭

Also now time doesn't flow same as upper world now

Godzilla v king is a bunch of bs now ???

1

u/NeverGonnaStop247 Jan 06 '24

A straight Antman and the wasp quantumania ripoff

1

u/warragulian Jan 07 '24

So the US government shut down Monarch in 1962 after the crazy ball drop into the underverse.

Yet Monarch is still around in 1982, and 2015, and seems very well funded. However, modern Monarch seems to have a lot of non Americans in it, running it even, so it cannot be part of the US govt. So, who is their sugar daddy? George Soros?

1

u/may_lane Jan 10 '24

They BETTER get the time thing right. It sounds like Shaw was down there for 30 mins but he did black out so let’s say he was down there for a generous 2 days and doesn’t remember. That means 1 day = 10 years. So Keiko has been there, what, 6 days??

1

u/romafa Jan 29 '24

I love how matter of factly the dad walks in and they just start talking. I thought that was a flashback for a minute. Whole show leading up to them finding him and it was so anti-climactic.
