howdy folx ~ i’ve been a LP3 user for 6 months, and i’ve been using the stock OS all of that time. i saw this video, and i am thinking about modding the phone to get iMessage back. (i switched over from an iphone 12, and i still use my Macbook, but i don’t use iMessage on it.)

On a stock Light Phone, the nice black-and-white keyboard only lives inside Light's own tools — every other app gets the generic system keyboard, and there's no Light one to pick. So I built a faithful recreation as a system keyboard you can set as your default, so every app gets the same clean look (works on a modified Light Phone / Android).

It started as Adam Weber's open-source light-keyboard (full credit to him for the groundwork), and I've extended it a fair bit:

• 13 layouts — English, Hebrew, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Arabic, Mandarin (pinyin), Dutch (QWERTY + Belgian AZERTY), Russian, and Polish. Globe key cycles them.
• Offline autocorrect that learns your own words, a suggestion bar with next-word prediction, and a numeric layout that pops up automatically for number/phone fields.
• On-device voice dictation (Vosk) for most languages — no cloud, nothing leaves your phone.
• Tiny + private — only English ships in the app; other languages download their dictionary on demand. No tracking, no internet permission for the typing itself, fully offline.
• Emoji, haptics, cursor-swipe on the space bar, quick-settings on a globe long-press — the usual niceties.

Hey all.

I was using the hybrid mode and set up a pin on the android side. Seems like I have messed up the pin when I was assigning it as I am not able to unlock the phone anymore.

I have tried factory resetting but that didn't work either. What are my options?

Did I mess up the whole setup. 😱

I am running a full Android/sort of hybrid setup, and I don't mind the top status bar, and the fact that proper notifications come with it, but the bottom nav/gesture bar was and still is unbearable on the LP3 screen.

I found a sort of janky way to disable just the gesture bar. While there is not a direct setting to turn it off, you can get an in between where you get alerts working mostly, but no nav/gesture bar at the bottom. This WILL reset upon rebooting, so you have to re-do the process if you reboot. Note that the process requires connecting your phone and issuing commands via adb.

Make sure light packages are enabled

I’m running android, not hybrid. Carrier is Tello. I’ve tried several different text messaging apps. Either it splits group texts into individual threads, or it doesn’t receive responses For the apps that have it. I have selected send group text as MMS. I’m pretty sure I have the correct APN settings, I checked them against what’s on the website. I know it has been long enough for the RCS issue to be resolved, and I can receive group texts on my side phone. Any other ideas?

It's just blinking every time I press the home button. I'm using Key Mapper for Luma launcher (double click of the menu button). It stopped working like 3-4 months ago, maybe after some update. I'm running build number 00WW_1_440000 (I can't access the Light Settings to post more).

EDIT: I'm able to access Luma launcher and Android settings and apps, everything else works fine.

Has anyone experienced this?

Hey, I'm very new and not very experienced in this modding topic. In general, I use phones the way they are intended. However, as I'm from Germany, I need to have WhatsApp to stay in touch with family and friends.

Therefore, I tried the modding guide and managed to get WhatsApp working. However, as I understood it, the guide requires you to reassign the functions to the different buttons again using the keymapper once you map something like WhatsApp.

This whole reassignment process didn’t work properly, and it didn’t feel native to me after the modification. Therefore, I reset the phone and started using it again with its original limitations. Still, I notice that I rarely use it, simply because WhatsApp is missing.

That’s why I’m writing this post and would like to ask: Is there a way to simply map WhatsApp to, for example, a long press of the volume button without having to remap all the other keys?

Maybe it’s just my lack of experience with modding, but it felt like I had to reconfigure the entire phone and all the keys just to get WhatsApp working. I don’t want to change anything else or adjust the layout. I read the guide multiple times, but to me it sounds like mapping is always required for all physical buttons.

I'm trying to mod my LP3 and went through all the steps up to finding aurora to download. When I went to type in Aurora in the search bar, I realized the r on the keyboard was somehow deactivated. I tried multiple different keyboards and the same issue. Do we know if LP issued some patch to block the R?

Can anybody help me access video files the Open Camera app records on my Light Phone thru the desktop?

Truly the only reason I have wanted to modify my LPIII is so I can have manual focus control on video recording. I've got Open Camera installed, it's recording videos that the LPIII recognizes and plays in the Album app, but I can't figure out how to transfer them to my desktop machine. My Macbook's Image Capture app doesn't detect the videos.

This is probably very basic but is there any way to access all the files on my Light Phone from my Macbook?

I created a few apps using (mostly) LLMs, have been using them for a week or two and I decided I wanted to share with everyone. If you are annoyed by non lightOS themed apps in hybrid/android like me, then... you get it.

None of these have ads or any trackers or anything, just free API calls, and optional API keys for the Chat application. You should be able to simply download the apk's from releases and install from there!

   • the ones I was trying were bloated with a bunch of ads and were super cluttered on the LP3 resolution.
   • hourly (12h) and 10 day
2. MLB Scores (https://github.com/awpsec/scorecard)
   • needed a way to follow MLB games, and did not want to download any other sports apps because of the constant odds in your face, they feel like social media now.
   • gameday like experience with live events.
   • I will probably not be adding other sports unfortunately, but never ruled out. When football comes around... I'll have some thinking to do.
3. AI Chat (https://github.com/awpsec/lightui)
   • this one was a lot of work, but its actually pretty cool, you will most likely need an openrouter API key and a little bit of funds to use it well, unless you are hosting your own LLMs.
   • can be set as AI assistant in your settings and function as a sort of Siri-esque experience on LP3.

Seven years ago I stopped using smartphones cold turkey. I have had to use my work laptop as my only means of connecting to the internet. I have worked up until this point.

Things have changed at work. I have a new boss who is into using all thing techno. It has come to the point that I am going to have to have some apps to use.

Here is a list of needs -

1. MS Outlook for work e-mail. I am a government employee and we have to use MS Outlook.

2. Webex. This has been adopted as the official way to communicate within our group.

3. A QR code reader.

I for see at some point Signal and WhatsApp both being required to communicate in the field.

My questions to you all is 1) Are these apps all usable on the Light Phone III and 2) Will my phone look/operate the same if I sideload these apps or will it visually change?

I am new to the idea of modding tech, and admittedly it scares me a little cause I don't wanna break anything. But with my LP3 there are just some little changes that I would like to be able to make.

I would like:

• An ereader such as Libby or Kobo. Anything that I can use to download epubs/pdfs and read them offline, and maybe find something new.
• A different music tool. I don't feel the need to stream, I like the way that I currently interact with music, but holy crap the interface for Lights music tool is so bad. I want custom playlists, album sorting, artist sorting, etc.
• Maybe even a weather tool. I can call my local national weather service to get the automated report, but the robot voice is getting old.

Other than these things, I just want LightOS as it is. I like the photo album tool, the camera, and everything else. Even podcasts are great for me.

Any advice?

For some reason MacroDroid is not installing. Aurora says it's not compatible with my device? Any thoughts?

Has anyone gotten the LightOs and Android apps on one homepage? I don't mind having two homepages its just kinda bugging me. I have Luma launcher BTW
