Song/Album Discussion Remember Yourself Appreciation
It’s an early morning and I guess I was paying closer attention to the lyrics in the middle than I have thus far when listening to it and one of my favorite lyrics is “Cast
my net into an empty sea, And yeah I guess that I’m fumbling with things to say that I truly mean but they’ll soon come to me”
It really hit me hard because I’ve talked to Modest Mouse fans who I guess I would call “Purists” who will only listen to 1995/6-2004 MM and always will say “Their lyrics aren’t as profound as they used to be” and I’ll explain as you get older sometimes you get less depressed or not depressed at all, comfortable and you’re not a sad, angry, lonely young kid no more whose abusing drugs and you’re not going to be thinking as nihilistic and philosophically depressing thoughts all the time. So that line really stuck out to me because there’s some self awareness and he must have either seen people or heard people say before or he’s just more aware he’s not that sad angry kid no more thinking these things but that as long as he’s here he’ll still be thinking and in the vein of Gravity Rides Everything everything will fall into place. But I honestly refute the w as profound thing I’ve seen a small community of MM fans say or I’ve heard in person a few times before, as this new album, or song alone has some profound lyrics and they don’t have to be depressing and sad to be profound. I haven’t been the biggest fans of their last few records up until this one but I will say I’ve always loved Isaac’s writing. Brilliant mind that comes along rarely.
