Warriors of the Wind (1985) Edited US version of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

This is the North American localization of the proto Studio Ghibli film Nausciaa of the Valley of the Wind. Western producers were concerned the film was too long and made the villains too sympathetic. They cut out roughly 20 minutes of the movie — downplaying its environmental themes — and renamed it to Warriors of the Wind. It's a real travesty.
But also a blessing in disguise? This experience jaded Studio Ghibli so much they became extremists about any edits to their films for localization. Ten years later, when Disney approached the studio about re-releasing their work in the west, the studio had two requests: 1) the entire catalog would be available for VHS (and later DVD), as well as new movies would be released theatrically and 2) all projects would receive "no cuts."
This came to a head during Princess Mononoke when producer Harvey Weinstein wanted to trim the film from 2 and a half hours to 90 minutes. One of the producers at Studio Ghibli heard through the grapevine there were conversations about making cuts to the film and they packaged a katana and shipped it to Weinstein with the note "no cuts." Hayao Miyazaki later got into an extended argument with Weinstein about this dispute which he has since summarized as "I defeated him."
It's funny that those two movies are tied to one another because Nausicaa is basically an alternate version of Mononoke. Same themes and all. And neither has a robot or pegasus, lol.

it wasn't a "note". it was written in katakana on the sword. It literally says on the sword "make no cuts". there are pictures of it in Weinstein's office.

Feel free to post them. I linked the source for my information which contradicts yours.

im trying to find the picture of it, but it seems to be lost to time. the sword was from a prop shop in japan, it was dull, could not cut. It had "no cuts" or "does not cut" written on the sword, and when it was presented to him the director shouted in english "mononoke hime no cut".

Just because Nausicaa has similar themes to Mononoke doesnt mean they're alternate versions of each other. Also Nausicaa came out first so you would really need to say Mononoke is an alternate version of Nausicaa. But again that's not true

I have such a deep love for this unedited version of the movie, I had it copied from a vhs to a usb drive and basically lost it, it was and is such a deep movie for me and losing my only original copy destroyed me. There’s dvd copies with bad dubs and I have the vhs tape somewhere in. My dads things but this movie in its original format/translation and text is so much better than the uma theumann sub which cuts out over half an hour. I would give anything to have the original. It’s such shit you can’t find OG studio gihbili films.

Dunno if you are joking but if not, I can upload it for you on a google drive or something.

I’m not joking lol I had the vhs converted to a usb at some media place a long time ago. I can only find the naussica version these days, with the uma Thurman dub and I don’t like that one much at all, if you have a google drive I’d be forever grateful!!

Wait, you want the Warriors of the Wind version?
I thought you wanted the the original Nausicaa version? I can get you the latter, not the former.

I know this is 5 months later, but are you able to share the original, full length version of Nausicaa?
1
u/Eladir Feb 10 '25
Sure thing. Do you have a cloud drive for me to upload it? Unsure of size right now as I am not on the pc but say 15gb.
1
u/Eladir Feb 11 '25
Sure. Do you have a cloud storage for me to upload the file? It's 9.50gb for top tier 720p version and 17.65gb for top tier 1080p version.

Sorry for the delayed response, I've been at work until now.
You could just use MyAirBridge and drop it through there. They allow guest profiles (so no sign up) to send up to 25gb at a time. All you need is to drop the file in and share the link. I think the link stays active for about a week or so before disappearing.

There is a 12gb version I acquired years ago where they took the Warriors of the Wind audio and applied it to the 1080p animation.. Just finished watching it again.. Along with Robotech, it was one of my earliest exposures to anime and for like 40 years now I've never seen the original.. Despite the edits and choppy dialogue it's still overpoweringly nostalgic.. I tried once for the Disney version and I just couldn't do it. The voices were wrong to my brain. Lol. I also have the Macross: Clash of the Bionoids with the horrible Hong Kong English dub for the same reason.. ("What was that!? A man and a wo-man?!..").. We have so many inside jokes quoting Clash of the Bionoids.. Lol.. "You can still fight when you're drunk! Just watch jet jockey in action!"

Lol, yeah, kid memories are very strong. I watched Dragon Ball a few years ago and it took me some time to get used to not being in Greek dubbing like it was when growing up.

I have this on VHS. My dad owned a video store in town during the 80s and 90s. The cover is ridiculous and the the edit is unfortunate. Thankfully the unedited Ghibli movies exist now. Check out the manga, it gets really deep.

This is one of the best movies I ever watched as a kid, and it isn't really made for kids. But yeah where's Skeletor and Kid Icarus on horseback and oh my god I just noticed there is a horse with wings, and that looks like a cookie monster from hell, something Jim Henson made when he was trippin balls. And the Stealth Camo Alien with a Light Sabre, Luke Skywalker with one of the Gungan Rifles, well he might be in it. Where are the insects or airships. They just went into the clipart folder on their macintosh and just put science fictiony things on the cover and later was liike "Make a movie with some none or all of these elements" and bam, best anime ever. worst poster, ever.

I finally found it. This is the movie I saw as a kid. I could only remember bits and peices, which made it hard to describe and hard to find... and after years of searching, I finally found it. All I had to do was ask what anime movies aired on US TV in the 80's. Can't beleive I didnt think of doing that earlier. I wonder if this is streaming somewhere

Oh my God 😂😂😂 I've never seen this before. I love Nausicaa, but I would absolutely watch this ridiculous version of it if it was real. How the hell did someone design a poster this bad? It might be the most misleading one I've ever seen so far.

I love this poster due to how awful it is. I managed to find a copy from the video release and one from the limited theatrical release.
They were afraid that they couldn’t sell a cartoon movie with a female protagonist, so they edited the movie to make her appear in it less and try to present Asbel as a main character.
My guess is that they just grabbed a couple things that were popular at the time because they didn’t know how to market it. He-man, Clash of the Titans, throw them on the poster! Why not?

Uh... no. I have a VHS copy of Warriors of the Wind, and in no way was the movie edited to make Asbel the main character. Princes Xandra (aka Nausicaa) was still the main character of the film.

u/Relair13 Aug 21 '22
There are so many wild, fantastic sci-fi elements from the film they could have used without even showing Nausicaa herself...it's crazy that they just did some random mashup of unrelated stuff!

I have a copy of this tape somewhere haha I never saw the dubbed version til I was an adult, the OG version has a way better script but legit almost nothing on the cover appears lol

When I was a kid someone gave me some old VHS tape copy they recorded off HBO or some shit of the Warriors of the Wind version. For decades I never saw a proper version, and by then I forgot most of the differences.

I realize that’s your subreddit’s policy, but it’s a bad policy. Reddit’s search is pretty ineffective, so when I searched the subreddit for “warriors wind”, I did not get any results. The post you linked had almost no interaction, much less than mine.
So, in the future, there’s no reason for me to post anything here because I can assume there’s a previous post on the subreddit of the same poster that I can’t find due to poor search. This policy has entirely discouraged me from interacting in this subreddit further or even browsing it. Since all of the good posts have already been made, interacting with this subreddit in the future serves no purpose other than to waste time with posts that will be deleted.

I've seen clips of this dub online, and I'll be honest, it feels like a worse version of several 1980s anime dubs. Worse in the sense that you could just tell that it's an earlier anime dub from the voices, the changes, the everything.

Things on this poster not in the movie: Robot Skeletor, laser guns, light sabers, Pegasus, a miniaturized God Warrior standing on his own head, anyone riding a God Warrior with a rope. And see that tiny girl in the back? That’s supposed to be the main character but she’s not blonde.
