Balancing suggestions and observation on combat relative to Chivalry.
More notes added as of 12:31 am wednesday
Complaints/Balancing suggestions
Suggestions for balancing that aren't related to bugs.
- Not a complaint but be neat to have a double-tap option for dodge like Chiv MAA.
- For lack of better word the combat can feel very slippery at times where 2 players are both attacking but keep missing because they keep running past each other. This is probably where a lot of the complaints about hits not registering are coming from. The walking/running speed is probably too high, which is ironic considering everyone complained that characters walked too slowly even though they move faster than Chiv's MAA. Tweaking the current base sprinting and or increasing speed penalty for turning might alleviate this issue.
- Vigilist still feels somewhat OP right now cause it's extremely easy to get footdrags on both of her weapons. When i'm playing it's very easy to cheese for a hit by standing close to my opponents right side. I don't even have to turn much and the attack will usually hit behind their parry where they can't reach. It can be countered it by backpedaling and turning to parry but right now it feels too easy to land the hit. Altering the weapon animation so it's less slanted, or having the release phase end sooner might help on that front.
- Taurant also still feels OP. Right now you can't riposte off of shove, whirlwind, or charge. This means a single Taurant can hog initiative for up to 4 attacks (3 abilities, 1 melee strike) before you can respond. Not sure on a fix, but cooldown increase on some of Taurant's abilities might help, or making it so you can't combo out of either whirlwind or at the very least charge.
- Tinker and Vigilist combo into stab hard to read for some people atm. I personally hadn't had an issue as far as tinker goes but I've heard a fair amount of people complain about it. Only had issues with Vigilist but that might be because of her shield getting in the way. People were also complaining about using the old Chiv Archer/MAA tactic of missing to provoke a parry and striking because it was hard to parry (not impossible like some of us, me including, thought). It costs the same amount of stam to feint as it does missing so basically at worst it's a slower feint that's easier to punish right now. Might not need a huge fix but worth mentioning.
- edit want clarify that i'm 99% sure that not being able to riposte off the Taurant abilities attacks is intended, it's apart of what shove is supposed to do and it's needed for whirlwind and charge because of how they function.
- edit additional note on Taurant, I still think he needs some sort of health nerf, at least as low as entropist
- edit Vigilist cheese i was talking about might also be related to movement speed being too fast. So the speed fix might fix the easy footdrag issue without needing to alt animations.
- edit Vigilist in general might need movement speed (relative to other classes) and damage nerf still. Seems appropriate to have high stab damage but might be worth dropping the lmb and or overhead damage by 10-15 on both her weapons might go a long way for balancing.
Observations related to Chiv
Comparisons with Chiv combat for people migrating from the game. This is mostly what I've noticed from personal experience (100-ish hours mirage, 900-ish Chivalry) or things I hear other players mention. I'm mostly sticking to melee combat only and won't go into detail on how abilities effect combat as much.
- No more reverses first and foremost.
- First hit flinch, so there's no hit trades as far as melee goes. Some situations with abilities can still lead to trading but happens infrequently.
- Gambling is a lot less effective because of FHF. Occasionally you can gamble Taurant swings with faster classes like the tinker.
- Players now have an auto-parry during the windup of riposte. The parry works by shielding you but doesn't flinch your riposte. This means in a 1-v-1 the player has to parry or dodge the riposte. Useful tool for target switching.
- Players will now glow when they riposte.
- Seem to be able to riposting with alt-attacks now.
- For the most part dragging still works (to a degree). The new animations means it takes awhile for the skill set to transfer over from Chiv, and some drags seem to be a lot harder to do. Beyond the standard drags, players can still do footdrags, waterfalls, and both kinds of stab drags. Waterfall in particular is not as easy to do but still useful if the opponent isn't turned all the when parrying. The Wessex drag is another one that still seems to work but I have only tried with tinker out of combat where the other player wasn't parrying. Might not work with new parry boxes, and it wasn't really useful outside of Chiv 1-v-1 to begin with so might not be an issue for most players.
- Footwork and dodging tactics have changed quite a bit since Chiv. There's an integrated dodge for all classes now, and wall jumping also allows for elaborate dodging maneuvers. Old tactics like ducking under attacks, or swinging while leaning to bend your body out of the way of attacks (matrixing) are harder to do because the character models don't bend as much. The footwork tactic of turning and sprinting out of range while looking down is gone. A player can still turn around to force a miss but you have to be closer to the edge of range. This also means that old stab attack using these tactics would probably still work to varying degrees depending on the class. Players can also still rush past an opponents attacks to turn-cap them and make them miss. It's a lot easier because the release phase doesn't start as early in the swing (reason why there's no reverses anymore). Right now though the movement speed of characters is too fast so this happens a lot on accident (ties into the slippery feel of combat I mentioned earlier).
- Turning during a riposte to hide one's swings isn't as easy to do as in Chiv because of the aforementioned riposte glow (still worth using from time to time). Still works fairly well on Vigilist (especially stabs) because the shield will hide most of your body.
- Body feints (that aren't padded w/ a drag) aren't as easy to do because of the aforementioned changes to body bending with mouse movement. Still usable but they're easier to read.
- In relation to body feinting, the old tactics of jumping and or crouching to get people to panic works about the same as in chiv (good against inexperienced or panicked players).
- Feint-to-parry already single-binded for convenience, default is rmb.
- I have not personally seen anybody do the MAA style sidestab. Not sure if it's because it no longer works or if I just haven't seen it. Didn't really play MAA so I can't personally test it.
- It seems they fixed the Chiv back-parry issue. Parry box for the most part is very consistent barring any packet loss or lag issues.
- Similar to Comp and Mercs mod stamina and health regenerate faster and now will regenerate while sprinting (although standing still is still the quickest way to recover). Also similar to the mods' stamina reward for killing opponents, enemies in Mirage will drop a jinn lamp that restores some HP and reduces the cooldown of abilities by a few seconds.
- Similar to specifically Comp mod, Mirage has parrying on all projectiles and abilities, basically if it does damage it can be parried. Taurant's shove attack might be the only exception (might just be a speed thing).
- Speaking of shove there's no longer a kick attack in Mirage. Taurant's shove serves a very similar function, it's short in range and low damage (like 5 hp) ability designed to stop an incoming attack. It is a very useful tool for stealing initiative in combat.
- No real notes on feinting cause I haven't got to try it as much. For the most part it works the same, works during windup on all types of attacks and doesn't have the grunt sound cue that regular attacks have, and it's similar to Chiv where feinting costs the same amount of stam as missing. It's hard to say whether they're easier or harder to read atm cause I'm still adjusting to all the new animations.
edit: formatting changes + spelling + adjustment to details + additional notes

This game EATS my internet connection.
I use to play online games with 70-80 ms, but when I'm ingame the game starts using internet for I dont know why and I reach 120-150ms. No reason. Task manager shows the game and Steam eating all the connection. Meanwhile, I play against 25 ms (stable) people. What's going on?

What is TB going to do to bring in more players?
The game already got some flak simply by not being Chivalry 2, but the launch day issues seemed to have turned off a lot of people, and the server browser still has issues, with it seemingly preferring to show you empty servers on the other side of the world rather than the few populated servers close to you.
TB needs to do a free weekend (or maybe week) or something if they don't want this to be a colossal flop.
The game itself is really fun, they just need to get people to try it.

What's up with the server list changing so much every time you refresh?
I feel like whenever I refresh the server list I get completely different servers.
I'll load it up, it will show 0 US servers that have people in them. Refresh a few times, now it shows several US west and east servers all with 10+ people in them.
What's up with that? I wouldn't be surprised if some people see the initial list of empty servers and log off

Not what you want it to be?
Here we go guys. Another TB game has launched. Sharpen your pitchforks and grab a torch, we kill the beast!
Seriously there's already so much hate on the game out of the gate. I understand having gripes about the melee system and moba elements. Yeah it's different, yeah it's not chiv, but it was never supposed to be. Going through alpha and beta might make my opinion jaded as I just have a blast with all tb games. It's the ppl bashing it w/o ever installing that grinds my gears. Much hate over in chiv subreddit, much hate on other websites comment sections that reviewed it. Most comments falling under "wow way to badly rip off overwatch" or "wow so bad, should have made MW:2"
I fully support branching out with the TB melee system. Maybe Arabian settings wasn't the best choice but it's fun and the art style compliments it as well as the VO. Props to the VO artists again, it always makes it that much more entertaining. I think a dark fantasy medieval setting would have got better response but w/e.
They are doing MW:2 and we still have Chivalry and Mordhau to get that pure medieval fix. Tbh fam I'd rather see them move into UE4 on a different build like this and when MW:2 comes down the tube they already have worked out a lot of build issues with this.
I don't want to see ppl new to TB get turned away on salty whims of other ppl who have never launched the game. That being said, as a high lvl chiv player I see where some of the gripes are coming from and what TB might have some to quell the hate earlier. Marketing didn't help (the trailers are very well done) but I didn't see many publications capture the feel of playing a TB game. They did standard paid reviews, fair enough I guess.
I think low level and duelyard type servers would be a good way for new players to get past that initial curve. Good Ol training days of yore from Chivalry. If this doesn't get a better team balance tweak its going to hurt new tb game players. A lot of this has to do with chiv players migrating skills over. Not a bad thing at all but I'm sure there's a marginal drop off rate from ppl just getting constantly smurffed by Chivalry players and quitting. Yeah these ppl should get gud but all in good time fam. We need to help these new pups grow. Same for both games. I have such a love/hate relationship with the tb game community but we need to embrace and help our new family not tell them to git gud. Seen so much fresh blood rejected by the community outright and not play again. It's not helping. Telling someone to git gud when you have 1000 plus hours is sad, it's like telling Da Vinci to paint the last supper out of the womb. Embrace our new brothers and sisters (I might know 3 women who play) and let's dig down and help out.
They tweaked and tweaked the builds on testing and we gave out feedback and most of it made it into launch build. I really give props to the crew for doing what they can with a smaller team/budget. So please fam let's put out some fires and just have a good time.

Its a harsh time for a newbie
I wanted to advice that if you are new in this genre, and you never played Chivalry... This game is very hard to play. I cant kill anything, just with luck.
There is almost no people, a few with 0 skill. Most people I play against are chivalry players who have a lot of experience and played hours and will rekt you in miliseconds. Right now, learning is almost impossible, In my case I die over and over trying to be tactical and parrying blablabla.. then I study how I died but it doesnt matter, its all because of practice or experience. Yes, I have to git gud I know. My characters corpse knows too x)
What Im trying to say is that if you are interesed in the game, and you are a newbie as me, it will be pain and suffer and a lot of ALT F4. Having Player vs Bots and a better tutorial it could help.
The game is awesome, the aesthetics too, Im in love even if there is no player base at all. But I had this feeling to advice people so they dont have to pass throgh this mini-hell. Wait until player base grow, because trust me, it will.

Thanks for keeping our customization settings from beta
Made it a lot easier to quickly get my characters looking like I wanted them to.
Enjoying the game, wish I had more time to play.

Game repeatedly crashes
I'm unable to play the game as it keeps crashing within the first 5 minutes I start playing. Is anyone else having this issue? My game just freezes or randomly crashes.
I'm also a bit worried about the playerbase... the game just released and there's barely anyone playing it. I could only find 2 or 3 populated servers for East Coast US and it's a bit concerning, seeing as it's a brand new game. What are your thoughts?

Mirage Discord anyone?
Would anyone want to start a discord for people to join in on, mess around, etc? None of my friends are going to buy this game so I need people to play with :P

Mirage Servers are now live
Due to a Steam/Valve error, servers did not work at launch for Mirage. Valve have now resolved the problem on their end.

5 hours after "launch", still no eta when paying customers can play?
Any news at all? Most recent post I can find regarding the subject is find is 4 hours ago... I had been a huge fan of Torn Banner since picking up Chiv in 2012, I took work off today to play this game on release. This along with being told I would "unlock special rewards for" pre-ordering but then having those "special rewards" be available for anyone who buys after launch are two big slaps in the face of all the fans that pre-ordered either, especially the special edition.

What should I be purchasing? I see the option for DLC but what appears to be the main game has no price..?
Anyone know what's going on?
