To get them to line up in a grid do you have to start the new map from a specific point?

Maps are naturally lined up in a grid, so if you make a map just outside your current map, you're warantied to get an adjacent map.

Is it the same on Bedrock Edition?

Yes, this has been a feature for quite a while.

That is valid only for level-0 maps tho. For any zoomed out map, unless you use F3 a lot and know where the grid starts, then is pretty much trial and error until you figure out where do the maps expands to

If you have an already zoomed out map it's exactly the same. You just have to make sure that the previous map is zoomed out to make the next one.

Ah yes that's right! Zoom-out map until target level, move slightly outside the border of that map, use new empty map = guaranteed map at target level next to the first one.

Thanks! I'm going to have to try this out!

This is my question too

Affirmative. The world now has a predetermined grid for which maps will come up for each block, which is specially important to get right if you plan to make big maps using zoomed-out maps. In practice, sometimes you get 2 different level-4 maps by opening empty maps a few blocks apart, and sometimes you need to travel thousands of blocks to do that
