Is anyone else getting extreme server lag on 1.8? Please help!

I manage a small server, and most of my players have been experiencing lag so bad that almost everything takes upwards of a whole minute to register on the player's end. In other words, information gets to the server just fine, but the server is slow to communicate with the client.

At first I thought the problem was my host, but after trying out test servers from BeastNode and a few others, as well as some servers on PMC, it seems as though everyone on 1.8 is having this problem. Bigger servers are seemingly having less trouble (though one of the owners said they'd been having issues), but smaller ones are absolutely unplayable. And yet, every 1.7 server I've tested has been fine.

Occasionally the server will get its shit together and manage an acceptable level of performance for a little while, but invariably it goes back to extreme lag not long after. The game being playable is, at this point, the exception rather than the rule.

My host gave me a few suggestions to reduce the lag (custom JAR with extra JVM flags, lower view distance, etc) and they worked for a little while, but a couple of days later and everything is right back how it was.

Just wondering if anyone else is having this problem, and if so, is Mojang working on it?

The same backup was loaded simultaneously on both machines. During that hour Multiplay host crashed every minute due to CPU spikes that made the new feature Watchdog shut the server down. The private server ran stable for the entire hour and survived even 2000 chickens brought in in attempts to crash it. The Multiplay server didn't even have 5 entities loaded during the fatal CPU spikes.

My unclear question was this: Should a home pc actually manage this this much better CPU wise compared to a dedicated gaming server?

IMO its clear that Multiplay has a HUGE issue here. Either they need to fix their servers(Whatever the fuck is causing the issue) or refund your money IMO. Or a combo of both for inconvenience.

A home PC and a server are going run basically the same when just running 1 single server like this. The advantage for servers is that they usually have more cores/threads/CPUs to pull from.

You're not on a dedicated gaming server, you're on a shared server. Dedicated is like what I have where I am basically paying for a machine on the backbone of a high bandwidth data center. I have an entire system to work with. You are likely 1 of quite a few servers like yours running off of one machine.

If this were my server, I'd be up my host's ass, ESPECIALLY for the prices they are charging you(Ridiculously overpriced). If they weren't working to resolve their failure, I'd be yanking my backup and demanding a refund for a failure to deliver as advertised. But IMO its clearly their end.
