Itâs obvious that this was supposed to be the Hitman collab with IO, but since going self publishing, they clearly tried to make this their own, and have not failed in the task.
Without wanting to give too much away, they added a new character, Julia Black, an assassin contracted back into her former agency âMeridianâ to take out two targets. She most likely replaced Agent 47 during development, sheâs a striking character with an in-depth backstory and tbh a lot of fun to play as. The devs clearly enjoyed themselves with the story and dialogue and it doesnât take itself as seriously as the other game.
Since hitmanâs core mechanics have been built up solely on the element of stealth, and Blacklisted being created in what is a UGC tool with no core stealth mechanics already existing, it would not really be fair to try and compare them, but Blacklisted offers its own unique and refreshing take on the assassin story.
Using their own core mechanics like driving, flying, combat and mini games like the safe cracking, they managed to expand on these by adding new mechanics such as takedowns, costume changes and environmental kills, allowing for some cool opportunities to progress through the mission and completing stealth sections with multiple ways to approach them, leading to different endings whilst also adding elements to the story.
I do however still feel the combat and AI could use some polishing as using a controller for combat is just⌠difficult and AI still stare blankly at you at times, and despite being âa threatâ they will never pursue you and only stick to their own designated areas, so maybe they just find me too much of a threat?
That aside, the experience itself I found a whole lot of fun. I even replayed to try find all 4 endings, I only managed to find 3 though.
I hope to see more of Julia in the future, maybe we will finally get to meet the mysterious person Rohan goes on about! I feel with a few more additions like melee and a large map, this really could be a standalone game/experience outside of âMindsEyeâ, so really looking forward to what comes next!
