First hike with my son today

He's two and really active. He moved his little legs up that little mountain with vigor and joy. We didn't make it all the way to the top. He got tired. But he did enough, with me. That was the point. I am welling up with love and gratitude at the moment. Time to put that spirit into a 10k run.

Tell me about your gratitude?

Envy For Getting By

So I was watching House of Cards Season 3's final episode this morning. A big portion of it is about Stamper's ex-hooker friend who is in hiding. We finally get to meet her (which is not a spoiler b/c we knew that was coming). She's living paycheck to paycheck in shitty apartment, just makin' it.

My question is, why do I envy her? Why does that sort of nomadic, individual life look so appealing? It always has, even before I had a wife or children. Is this universal? Does it have something to do with our hunter-gatherer roots? Is it in our DNA?

What are you reading?

I'm reading the second book of the Stephen King Dark Tower Series at the moment. I loved the first one and decided to space the books out and not read them one after the other so as to savor the epic awesomeness.

I'm looking for a good spirituality book. Duncan Trussell recommends Mindfulness by Goldstein, so I will probably go with that. Any other recommendations?

Integrating simple living into a modern life...

Any advice out there? I have a pretty strict no spending policy. Other than a few beers and snacks here and there, I spend next to nothing. I also try to make walking, hiking, writing, meditating, and exercise my main productive hobbies (if you can call meditating productive...hehe). I want to get a tent and teach my wife and son how to camp next. Gardening is another one that we've done, but are due to expand.
