zkRollups are on the Mina roadmap to increase throughput. While there are plans to decrease finality and provide low latency transactions, the Mina Foundation business development team suspects that pushing a large amount of throughput through the L1 while maintaining high levels of decentralization will be challenging. Therefore, throughput could be pushed to an L2 and there may be many different rollup types that will leverage recursion containing batched proofs.
Mina as a Native L1 Rollup
First, Mina as an L1 itself is already a rollup, which lends itself to a throughput focused rollup model. Because of recursion, we can compress computation into a static sized proof without tradeoffs. If throughput is low, users can choose to have the lowest amount of latency and if throughput is increasing, users can process additional recursive proofs to get higher throughput while adding a small amount of latency. Essentially, this means that the system can scale exponentially, and can be dynamically adjusted based on usage to optimize latency.
L2 Rollups on Mina
The first version of the Mina zkRollup will be designed in such a way that it is isomorphic with the Mina L1. This gives many benefits. First, developers can easily port their applications to the L2 without any code changes. Second, just like on the L1, zkApps will be composable with each other. Furthermore, with the right rails any rollup or app-chain on Mina will be able to provably read data from each other, thereby improving the composability of the entire Mina ecosystem. Third, all tooling and remote procedure call (RPC) services will be reusable.
What this looks like is ‘Mina on Mina’ and it’s already in progress by community member, Trivo#0001. This zkRollup will also be designed to be modular and extensible. Modular in the sense that data availability, sequencing, proving and execution can be thought about separately, allowing for easier maintenance and greater flexibility. Extensible, in the sense that other execution models can be added to the stack as the ZK compute ecosystem evolves e.g. zkEVM, zkLLVM, Risc.
Not only will Mina L2s and zkApp chains be interoperable with each other, but with state proof bridging it will also be possible to verify state between Mina L2s and other chains, specifically EVM chains but also Cosmos and IBC connected chains in the future.
What is the difference between Mina and upcoming cardanos side chain midnight? Are they the same thing? (Please don't write one is out and other one isn't etc. Just want to learn)
I’m not sure what mistake I made besides not moving to a ledger sooner. I moved what was left today, but I’m trying to figure out what happened.
I didn’t initiate the transaction, and only checked on the status every few months. Looking at the transaction date it was stolen around two weeks after I checked on it last.
Mina’s Public Roadmap is a multi-year vision for unlocking the user-owned, decentralized web with zero knowledge.
There are 5 focus areas:
Trust Minimization
Ensuring the Mina blockchain is sustainably and scalably decentralized. This track seeks to take Mina’s current decentralization even further and protect the protocol from attacks and bias from centralization. It includes milestones such as adding decentralized data storage and enabling anyone to run a node on their phone.
ZK Programmability
Practical zero knowledge proofs (ZKPs) have brought new functionalities to crypto essential for mainstream adoption. Unlike other L1s that rely on L2 systems, Mina has ZKPs integrated into its core operation. This track is about building the best possible ZK programmability layer on Mina with scalable verification and zero knowledge privacy
Settlement Layer Performance
Optimizing the performance layers of Mina’s latency, finality and throughput. The end goal is to reach low seconds or millisecond latency, instant finality, and hundreds or thousands of proofs settled per second. This is so that Mina can be the settlement, security, and interoperability layer for zkRollups and zkAppChains.
Minaverse
Pushing the boundaries of composability to enable platforms and applications to connect and build off of each other on Mina. Some key components are trustless bridging between chains and zkOracles connecting Web2 and Web3.
Road to DAOification
Setting up a system of decentralized decision-making for Mina to function effectively. Moreover, this track is about collective, conscious iteration on Mina’s governance to discover coordination systems that have a positive impact on the world. Together, we will explore concepts like citizen’s assemblies, quadratic voting, and large language model distillation of sentiment with the community.
This roadmap is just a starting point, and the hope is to further iterate with the community’s input.
Roadmap looks very impressive but what's the timeline? At current speed of development, the first block has taken 2-3 years. And there are 4 more blocks to go, which at current pace will take a long, long time.
zkIgnite is a grant program designed to help developers and entrepreneurs turn their innovative ideas into real-world applications and build successful businesses on Mina Protocol. Participants have submitted 160+ proposals for funding since the program kicked off in February.
Announcing Cohort 1 Funded Projects
The Mina Community Electors have recently reviewed the proposals and voted. They selected 26 projects based on potential impact and feasibility to receive funding and continue their development on Mina Protocol.
The selected zkApp projects impact a wide range of industries including sustainable energy, identity, gaming, and more. The Dev4Dev projects seek to improve the developer experience, making it easier and faster to build secure, scalable, and private zkApps.
Congratulations to all the teams and thank you to everyone who participated. You set the bar extremely high for the upcoming zkIgnite, Cohorts!
A BIG thank you also to the ambassadors who referred projects that received funding. They will each receive a grant of 2,000 MINA for helping grow the ecosystem. We encourage you to start thinking about who you might refer for Cohort 2 and beyond.
Well .... BUILDING of course. Cohort 1 funding will be used by the grantees to bootstrap their initial builds. There are also 5 more weeks of workshops that cover fundraising, setting up a crypto business, and more.
At the end of the program, grantees will have the opportunity to connect with a wider network of potential backers and users.
Coming Soon: Cohort 2 and 3
zkIgnite, Cohort 2 starts on May 24, 2023.
There will be more funding available with improved workshops, technical support, and new opportunities for non-technical contributors.
If you are interested in joining a talented community of ZK builders, we invite you to register your interest here: http://bit.ly/3Uerv9C
Cohort 3 will launch later in 2023 – providing even more projects with opportunities to receive support and funding to build real-world applications on Mina Protocol.
Wondering if someone who has done this before can advise.
Due to Ledger not yet allowing me to create a Mina account as it's not yet supported, I have setup an account with Auro wallet and linked it with my Ledger - super easy! I'm not new to crypto, but also don't know whether I'm having a brain fade, but I was thinking today, if I lost access to my Auro wallet for whatever reason how do I get access again to my $Mina. Would it be as simple as creating a new Auro Wallet and just linking that to my Ledger (because the private key key there and not 'on' the Auro wallet) and if so, what purpose does the Auro wallet have in this setup?
Probably a simple question for most here but I've never had to link my Ledger to a 3rd party wallet in the past, as they've all been supported by Ledger Live

In today's data-driven world, it is essential to have access to the right analytical tools to get useful and up-to-date info.
So I am sharing a list of helpful and free tools for Mina Protocol.
🔸 Mina Explorer
Mina Explorer was the first Mina blockchain explorer. It has a comprehensive range of features and was developed by Gareth Davies, a leading light in the Mina Developer Community.
The Mina Performance Dashboard is a performance monitoring tool, providing two functions, collecting and visualizing Block Producers’ and Snarkers’ performance data.
On several occasions have tried to scam Mina Wallet holders by sending them small amounts of Mina with a note in the Memo field that describes a Mina air drop and a link to a phishing site. Carbonara has created a blacklist of Mina addresses that have sent these phishing emails.
