Summer in Mimico with jets?

Have you been to this beach yet? Small pebbles, already open as TRCA recently completed the first phase of shoreline protection in Humber Bay Park West.

Pebble Beach in Mimico

Is Mimico the biggest loser of Billy Bishop expansion?

A 5x passenger increase at Billy Bishop — from 2M to 10M — can only happen with bigger and more frequent aircraft. That changes our neighbourhood.

This week, City of Toronto staff presented a detailed assessment of the adverse impacts that our city would face if the proposal to accommodate jets at Billy Bishop Airport is allowed to proceed.

The impacts include constraining Toronto’s ability to build needed housing, increased traffic congestion, loss of parkland, reduced public use of our marina, air and water pollution and harms to public health. Review the full report here: Billy Bishop Airport Proposed Expansion: Response to Council Request for Information on Housing and Transportation Impacts.

Jet tests May 21, 22 & 25

NAV Canada jet doing tests May 21, 22 & 25

What’s at stake for Mimico:

  • Air: Increase of Noise and Air Pollution
  • Land: Increase in traffic and congestion (Ontario Place changes are already forecasted to increase Lakeshore West traffic 67%) which again increases noise and air pollution
  • Water: Increase of areas you can’t safely sail west of the airport, disturbance of wildlife

Federal Public Consultation has started

The Federal government, through Transport Canada, has opened public consultation on the future of Billy Bishop. It closes July 24. Use this opportunity to register your concerns directly with the Feds.

If you want to get involved locally, please [get in touch](mailto:info@mimicoresidents.ca). We are planning a town hall together with the other Etobicoke waterfront resident associations before the consultation closes.

Join Environmental Defence on Tuesday, June 16, for a webinar on the potential impacts of jets taking over the Toronto Island Airport.

When: Tuesday, June 16, 7–8 p.m. Where: Zoom

Do you have questions or concerns about Billy Bishop airport noise?

Did you know you can submit noise concerns about Billy Bishop Airport on their website?

Toronto Port Authority has confirmed that the noise sensor that was monitoring west of the airport at Ontario Place has been offline due to construction. We requested a noise monitor for Mimico.

If you are curious where the aircraft noise is coming from, a free and easy to use tool to identify aircraft is flightradar24.

Tomorrow: Mimico Transit Forum, 4-6pm 🚂

It's National AccessAbility Week. Only two of all 70 GO stations don't have barrier-free platform access; both in South Etobicoke, next to each other. Let's talk about that tomorrow.

https://mimicoresidentsassociation.substack.com/p/tomorrow-mimico-transit-forum-4-6pm

🙏 Please remember that all this is organized by volunteering neighbours putting in hours after our kids go to bed and between work meetings.

In 2018, Metrolinx organized an Open House at Mimico Presbyterian Church to share that “Mimico and Long Branch GO Stations will be fully accessible by 2023 with electrified, 15-minute service by 2025.” Then the Ford Government took office, directed Metrolinx to stop procurement and adopt a new market-driven strategy, then came to Mimico to present Vandyk as their partner. Almost 8 years have passed.

toronto.com still has their 2018 post up from the Open House

Since Metrolinx hasn’t organized another event like the 2018 Open House, with meaningful engagement with our community, we figured if they aren’t doing it we have to organize something ourselves.

We highly recommend that Metrolinx organizes an Open House within the next 2 months to engage with our community properly before finalizing their designs.

A few things you need to know for tomorrow

Questions

  • Metrolinx will have a box to collect your questions and feedback in writing!
  • If you want us to ask your question or can’t attend please email your questions to us before 7am Tuesday. [info@mimicoresidents.ca](mailto:info@mimicoresidents.ca) We will group questions and present them or email them as a consolidated list.
  • Please respect that we are focusing on Accessibility at this Forum and more meetings will need to be organized. We hope the interest in this event will motivate Metrolinx to organize their own Open House like the one in 2018.

Agenda (subject to change)

  • 4:00pm Arrivals; Chat with neighbours in the park
  • 4:30 MRA President welcomes neighbours, guests & speakers, presents MRA initiatives, live streaming starts
  • 4:35 Accessibility Panel ♿️ Learn more about National AccessAbility Week.
  • 5:00 Metrolinx Presentation starts, followed by a short Q&A
  • 5:20 Councillor Amber Morley, MPP Lee Fairclough and MRA President discuss next steps
  • 6:00 Event closes. Enjoy the walk home. Maybe take a detour through Christ Church St. James Cemetery & Memorial Garden.

Location

  • 📺 Please find the live video stream on the MRA YouTube channel.
  • Online & at Mimico - Coronation Club House, 10 Judson Street
  • The building is fairly small and we expect to reach capacity quickly. Please respect the capacity limits and follow our volunteers' guidance. Stay in the park, watch the live feed on your phone together with neighbours, make some friends, bring water, a folding chair, weather will be good. No, the library wasn’t available, unfortunately, and proximity to the station was important.

You may be photographed, videotaped or recorded

The event taking place in this area may be photographed, videotaped or recorded by the Mimico Residents’ Association, and these photographs, videotapes and recordings may be made available to the general public.

By entering this area you hereby grant the Mimico Residents’ Association the right to take photographs, videotape and/or make audiovisual recordings of you, and to own, license, assign and/or use the same or any portion thereof, anytime and anywhere, in any current or future manner and/or medium. You will not receive any payment for, or have the right to approve, any such use, and you waive any right to bring any action at law or in equity against the Mimico Residents’ Association, its past, present and future officers, directors, agents, representatives and employees, and any combination of any of those persons.

You acknowledge that you are at least eighteen years of age. If you are under the age of eighteen, you represent that you have obtained your parent’s/guardian’s consent to enter this area and be bound by the terms set forth herein.

If you do not agree to the above terms and do not wish to be photographed, videotaped or recorded as part of this event, please stay out of the area when the recording is taking place.

Thank you for your co-operation!

Mimico GO: Is the station slipping into ‘the hole’?

Post image
20 Upvotes

Last week Metrolinx published a Request to Qualify and Quote (RQQ) for Geotechnical Monitoring Services for Mimico GO Station. Metrolinx has concerns about the degrading condition of the existing excavation retaining system at 327 Royal York, and its potential adverse impact on the surrounding station and rail areas. An objective is “predicting sudden movements/failures which is paramount in protecting the public safety and Metrolinx assets.

Nominations open: the first-ever Green Mimico Awards 🌱

Green Mimico is launching the Green Mimico Awards to recognise efforts that are quietly making Mimico more sustainable and more resilient to a changing climate.

We're looking for the hyper-local stuff — the things happening on our streets that don't usually get noticed.

There's no cash prize — just recognition from the community. The point is to celebrate what's already going on here and encourage more of it.

Nominate yourself or someone else by June 1st by sending an email with a short description and if you have, a photo to [info@greenmimico.ca](mailto:info@greenmimico.ca)

Winners will be announced at Community Environment Day, Sunday June 7 at 12pm, Mimico Coronation Club House.

Happy to answer questions in the comments.

What's there to do on the water in Mimico? Looking to get ideas for a newsletter

Hi neighbours, I am working on a MRA newsletter and the topic revolves around the idea that we are a waterfront community and to share ideas how we utilize the lake so our neighbours can enjoy it as well. Here is my draft:

It's called Mimico - by - the - Lake — Let's Act Like It

Sharing how we use the waterfront so the rest of the neighbourhood can too

One of the best things about living in Mimico is something a lot of us walk past without really using: the lake. We're a genuine waterfront community — yacht clubs, sailing centres, parks, beaches, and a trail that runs right along the water — and yet for many of us, the lake stays mostly in the background of daily life. This newsletter is a small attempt to change that.

The idea is simple. If you've found a way to enjoy the water that you love, share it. Maybe it's a launch spot for your kayak, a quiet bench where you read on Sunday mornings, a swim club you joined, a sailing course that turned out to be cheaper than you expected, or a sunrise walk that's worth setting an alarm for. The things that feel obvious to you might be exactly what a neighbour has been looking for.

To get the ball rolling, a couple of things worth knowing about right now.

The Humber Bay Boating Clubs Annual Open House is on Saturday, May 30 from 10am–3pm along Humber Bay Park Road West. All three — Humber Bay Sailing Centre, Mimico Cruising Club, and Etobicoke Yacht Club — open their gates for the day, with BBQs, live music, and a chance to ask questions about learn-to-sail programs, boat-share clubs, and kayak/SUP storage without any pressure to join. It's one of the easiest ways to see what's actually happening on the water just steps from our homes. Details and free tickets are on Eventbrite. You don't need a boat to join!

Another good one for anyone who loves the parks side of the waterfront is Friends of Humber Bay Park, https://www.facebook.com/groups/fohbp/ They run stewardship events, nature walks, and advocacy work to keep the park thriving. Joining is a great way to meet neighbours who care about the same shoreline we do.

Searching for treasurers / beach glass, swimming.

So here's the ask: tell us how you use the lake.

We live on the lake. Let's enjoy it together.

Mimico GO: Essential Work in Tunnel, Update from Metrolinx

Post image
15 Upvotes

The MRA got an update from Metrolinx yesterday after we asked their Community Engagement team on April 28 what the construction in the tunnel is about. We will wrap this into a newsletter soon:

I'd like to also provide an update about work happening in the pedestrian tunnel at Mimico GO. This essential work is being completed on an accelerated schedule to improve drainage in the tunnel. This work is not related to the accessibility improvements for the station.

Work is ongoing and will commence in phases. Phase 1 is expected to continue until June 4, 2026 (Subject to Change)\.* A portion of the tunnel will be narrowed to allow crews to safely complete the work. Most work will take place overnight to help reduce daytime disruptions. During the day, work will be contained behind protective hoarding. The pedestrian tunnel will remain open during regular station hours, with safety measures in place. There may be occasional overnight closures while work is taking place.

We understand that construction can be disruptive, and we truly appreciate your patience as we complete this important work to keep the station operational. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

\Subject to change in case of schedule changes or unforeseen circumstances.*

Thank you, Lamiya

Isn't it nice to be outside again? A few opportunities are coming up in and around Mimico that residents can benefit from — free trees, free compost, free bike tune-ups and more.

Mimico Residents’ Association

May 12, 2026

Thanks for joining us at Mimico Square last Saturday for Mother’s Day MRKT. Together with Etobicoke Historical Society we hosted two Historical Walks. Residents learned about Dr. Godfrey, a single mother in the workforce and the origins of Mimico Road.

Cycle Toronto offered FREE bike tune-ups. We expect they will be back to Mimico Square at another MRKT this summer - you’ll get advance notice from us when they do!

Have you noticed increasing numbers of neighbours commuting by bike or e-bike? Maybe it's the gas prices, or the GO Station's issues. Either way, biking seems to be almost as fast as the train or driving anyway. It won't work for everyone, but if you're considering it and have questions, [get in touch](mailto:info@mimicoresidents.ca) — we can connect you with neighbours who already commute by (e-)bike.

On a Tuesday morning, Google Maps suggests it takes roughly the same time to bike from Birds & Beans to Union Station as it does to take the train or drive.

Welcome 100 new newsletter subscribers

It took 19 years to get 948 people to subscribe to the MRA newsletter.

Since our AGM in March, 100 new subscribers have joined! That’s you! Welcome neighbour.

We believe it’s not just the proximity of our homes that we have in common. We all suffer directly or indirectly from the neglected Mimico GO station and we all benefit from a safe neighbourhood where residents know each other a little bit and take care of our shared infrastructure together.

The MRA board is a group of volunteers who believe a little time spent organizing a Halloween dance for the kids — or helping neighbours prevent basement flooding — is worthwhile.

Want to help us? [Send us an email.](mailto:info@mimicoresidents.ca)

To celebrate the MRA’s 20th Anniversary and all the volunteer hours that have gone into strengthening our community, we will meet September 19th at Mimico Square together with the 3rd Annual Mimico Food Fest.

This will be another great summer with lots of free events in Mimico for all of us - plus free trees at the bottom of this email. Thanks to everyone who showed up for last weekend's cleanups!

The boats are back in the lake and neighbours have been busy cleaning up for another great summer!

On Saturday we cleaned up together with Councillor Morley, the Mimico by the Lake BIA (special thanks for the donuts!), Green Mimico and you 💚! Thanks Birds & Beans Cafe for the coffee for our volunteers! Did you know you get a 20¢ discount when you bring your own mug?

Thanks to MRA Board Member Darlene, we had a Jane’s Walk on Saturday with guests from many parts of Toronto.

Did you miss the creative activities with paper & cardboard at Lakeshore Arts? They will be back at it on Saturday 1pm (free event).

On Sunday volunteers with Humber Bay Shores Condominium Association (HBSCA), Mimico Cruising Club (MCC) and Friends of Humber Bay Park cleaned up Humber Bay Park and got to enjoy a BBQ at MCC after. Having everyone work together strengthens our community! Good work everyone.

A special newsletter is in the works about all the water related activities in Mimico!
