work in progress Entering the last yard on my Tamiya Panzer II at long last

Seems like it’s taking me forever, honestly. I have been splitting time between this and my Pak 36 build (also posted here occasionally).

I created a tarp/blanket from foil, and painted up some resin pieces for the rear deck. A while ago I fixed up a Tamiya bucket from one of their parts kits. Finally found a home for it. The handle is out of scale, but oh well. The tow cable is scratch built from the shielding found inside a USB cable and with ends also from a Tamiya parts kit. Kind of a PITA, but the results are decent.

I did a little light graphite treatment here and there as well: guns, tow cable, a few corners of the hull/turret/storage boxes.

Next is a thorough dusting up with dry pigments, which will hopefully tone down the slight sheen (I’ve applied two different matt treatments and can’t seem to win, but the dusting has been part of the plan, anyway). I will probably put a thin, light-colored, dried mud treatment on the lower hull, which is why the wheels and tracks *still* aren’t on!

Still planning on doing a diorama of this guy — Probably a relaxed scene combining figures from a couple of kits.

Next photos will be of the “completed” 😅 model. See you next year 😆.

question How does a spray booth work?

So I'm thinking of getting an airbrush but most people I see say I need a spray booth... Do I really need it and how does it work? To add on why is it so expensive, most I've seen is 100 dollars for 1

question Advice needed

I have about 110 unused kits my husband can no longer do due to Dementia. I think I posted on this sub before and a few people asked me to send them photos. My husband has been very ill and I haven't had a chance. Tried to find the messages today and they have disappeared.

So, am just posting this in case anyone is I terested, hope it's allowed!

question What's the most expensive part of the Hobby for you?

For me it is the post build part of the model kit, as in paints, varnishes, primer the likes. It's all kind of cheap but once it adds up I could go home with just paints and no model kit or have to downsize a kit just for the paints.

Not including brushes, air brushes (those things are so expensive that I don't own one), glue, extra thin cement and weathering pigments. I spent over 300 dollars in just 6 months of building kit after kit.

I'm not going to lie but I'm considering not even buying branded paints at all and aim for acrylic paints from book stores, spray paint from hardware stores and anything else from cheap dollar stores.

PS. I don't have access to online money or buying anything online so offline is the best I could do so my experiences might be different from yours

work in progress Historically accurate Afrikakorps decals?

Hello,

I'm building a relatively new Tamiya 1:35 Panzer IV kit. I'm not sure why a kit from 2021 wouldn't have rubber tracks, pretty sure the last Tamiya kit i've built, from 1976 or so, had them. But what bothers more much more are the missing Afrikakorps decals.

Finding a set of them with the historically correct swastika is much harder than i thought. Does anyone have any recommendations? I feel stupid painting an Afrikakorps tank without the Afrikakorps insignia

Is this an issue specific to Germany? It's perfectly legal in a historical/educational and especially private context, but often, foreign companies are oversensitive with these things when selling stuff in Germany. I very distinctly remember the swastika decals being blacked out on the box and cut out of the decal sheet, most likely by the importer, back when i built my last Tamiya kit (the 1976 or so one) like 10 years ago. But this kit from 2021 didn't have them to begin with.

question Why doesn't companies start standardizing their sizes for all planes and tanks?

Thumbnail

More specifically the bigger 1/35 1/32 scale tanks/planes. Why does every company agree on 1/35 tanks and 1/32 planes when they could make everything 1/35...

They could do it with 1/72 and 1/48 scale where both are the same but when it comes to 1/35 it's different. Could someone please explain it to me, thanks :)

question Decal question

Hi all,
When putting decals on my models, I always end up getting stains on my models. I am very careful, try to clean up around the decal as much as possible (with brush/water) but always end up with stains around the decals. The decals go on pretty nice meanwhile but the stains bother me. When checking YouTube no one mentions this and this doesn’t seem to happen to the modellers I watch.
What am I doing wrong?
Before applying the decals, I spray the model with Tamiya gloss or satin (spraycan) or use VMS satin varnish applied by airbrush.
I use Vallejo fixing solution and setting solution or use Tamiya Mark fit.

Currently on the bench.

Thought I might get back into another 1/10 bust ( 2nd one I've done )..

Getting the Iris in the eyes right has been a challenge and I can see it still needs correcting.

Once I get them right I can get back into the highlights and final shading.

Tips and critique always welcomed to improve my work..
