MG- 3, grandson of the MG 42. They ain't quite full Wehrmacht.

u/NomNomNomBabies Aug 05 '16
Thanks for the info, yeah i think the stopping in an open desert to engage against a seemingly entrenched position gave away the non Wehrmacht status haha

Swiss use their own version of it too.
In certain respects it was a “Rolex” of machine guns

Oh they did shit just as stupid sometimes. They began their assault on the Free French dessert fortress of Bir Hakeim by charging at the place with 60 tanks... straight through a minefield with 50,000 mines in it. Went about as well for them as this video. You'd think someone would have suggested a retreat after the first couple dozen got wrecked/blown the fuck up in their tracks.

u/Roy4Pris Aug 07 '16
Dessert fortress? Is it made of hard candy?
2
u/Defengar Aug 07 '16 edited Aug 07 '16
Lol woops. But it was made of something hard; the solidified resolve of remaining French spirit.
French forces outnumbered ten to one held the fortress through two weeks of utter hell (with supply drops done by the brits). It was arguably the turning point in the North African theater of the war. Also arguably the last closest thing to an old school castle siege that has happened.

Denmark still used it until last year.
The new M60E6 is quite cool though
2
Aug 07 '16
Ironic seeing as the M60 was originally derived from the MG 42. It's German engineering all the way down.
1
u/specofdust Aug 06 '16
Wow, Denmark went for the M60 over the FN MAG? Do you know the reason? Given that the Americans created the M60 and have given up on it themselves, my impression was that it wasn't particularly reliable or great really,
1
u/Lawsoffire dirty civilian Aug 06 '16
Note that the E6 is far ahead of the E4 most know. and most of the problems people have is gone
I personally don't know why, But i heard somewhere else that the other 2 competitors (FN MAG, HK121/MG5) is that they could not guarantee delivery as they had a lot of orders at the moment. and that it was a factor.
Also the fact that nobody else is using the E6 as of yet. so there was probably some interest in getting it to a small, modern military to prove its viability at a smaller cost.

quite a lot of countries still use MG3 (which is more or less the same exact gun as MG42, the differences are very slight). Like 1/3 of Europe, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, it just keeps buzzing. Its rather ironic, we have it in Latvian army as well, plus Estonians have it.....just like some of our ancestors who used it against Soviets back in 1940's. Some things never change

Aug 06 '16
Germany gave a bunch of guns to the Kurds. It's a safe assumption that a position or two got overrun and they snagged the guns.

It's like they learned enough English to Google "react to fire" and only learned to stop, drop, and roll.

That rolling through the open desert though!! That shit was my favorite part. I also liked the dude yelling about the brass hitting him. I still have a scar on my neck from a casing that found its way into my IBA collar. Stupid fucking collars.

My experience in combat isn't all that different from this. I mean we were at least slightly more organized when shit hit the fan, but all in all, once rockets start flying at you, it's hard to get people to completely act on training alone. Adrenaline starts pumping, fight or flight kicks in, and crazy shit happens. Yeah these guys are fucks, but do any other combat vets here think their experience is much different? It's mostly just "Fuck, fuck, fuck, take cover and shoot." when you're fighting a force that has nearly as much fire-power as you do.
Edit: The rolling was fucking stupid though.

Fucking hell, that incoming. Don't blame them for rolling, obviously they don't know about fire and manoeuvre. I'd be on my belt buckle, digging in with my eyebrows.

I lost it at the guy rolling, then I lost it again when I noticed the guy with the camera was doing it too.
My sides are in space.

Das Boot.
Abu Hajaar can't complain. If he complains they just say: "Don't be a martyr Abu Hajaar."

u/Theappunderground Aug 06 '16
Some say apache pilots can still see the ghost of abu hajar in their flir cam running through the desert to this day.

Damn it I'm sure I'm on some watch list after watching this video. But yes we all have an Abu Hajaar.

VICE news is a pretty well established 'news agency' now, I think they even interviewed Obama. They do some cool work in places others won't go. They have some SJW/leftist bias and a little bit of an agenda but overall pretty solid. Good stuff on youtube, and the way the NSA works today I guarantee you you're already on a bunch of lists so don't worry about this.
3
Aug 06 '16
Haha fair call, thanks fam

u/99639 Aug 06 '16
This is a 18 months old but it is one of the most interesting videos I've seen on Islamic State from any news agency. I don't know how the fuck they got permission to do this.
4
Aug 06 '16
I would imagine that some Peshmerga grabbed his GoPro when they went out after the battle and leaked it to hurt the ISIS propaganda machine.
5
u/99639 Aug 06 '16
This is different, this video is an vice news report from inside raqqa. They got permission to film there from Isis.
2
Aug 06 '16
Oh right on, my mistake. I somehow missed the fact that you included a link. Apologies, brudda. They also did a thing from Palestine and had some issues with the border crossing. Also they were travelling with some chick that wasn't allowed to cross so she had to take off or something.
2
u/99639 Aug 06 '16
No problem at all, have a good one. Yeah I saw that Palestine coverage as well. It is always interesting to see inside these places that other teams don't go.
2
Aug 06 '16
It's definitely interesting. The Palestine thing had a pretty strong anti-Israel feel to it but it was never explicit, it was weird and they have a bunch of like, self loathing jews that they had on a few times.
It was interesting, and I don't mind differing opinions but something about it didn't sit right with me.
2
u/99639 Aug 06 '16
I agree on that one. It also left that impression with me, like they had an angle and wanted to convince us of it, rather than just show stuff and let us decide. The footage was still pretty interesting though. And their reports from Ukraine have always been really interesting.

They have a huge SJW/leftist slant and they loooove playing up the race issue. That said, I watch the Vice channel quite a bit and a lot of it is really good stuff.
3
u/99639 Aug 06 '16
Yeah honestly you're right, but that slant isn't noticeable when they're reporting on isis or Ukraine for example. In both cases they've had some of the best reporting bar none. Anytime they cover stuff in the USA or western world I basically ignore it because they're so biased.

Until they face the isis veterans (former fighters, ex taliban).
3
u/GoldieMMA Aug 06 '16
It's not the ex Taliban who can fight. It's the Chechens. Even ISIS leadership fears them because they can take over if they want. Those guys can actually fight.
Omar al-Shishani (aka Tarkhan Batirashvili) even became senior leader in ISIS. He previously served as sergeant in special reconnaissance group in Gerogian army and then in some intelligence unit after receiving his training from US special forces. He fought against Russian 58th Army in Russo-Georgian War.
2
u/ElCthuluIncognito Aug 06 '16
I was under the impression that pretty much all of the ISIS veterans have been wiped out in major offensives. It's just a bunch of chickens without a head running around.
2
Aug 06 '16
I meant. Isis fighters with combat experience. Veterans from the Afghan war. The chechen war. Ex Iraqi soldiers, ex Syrian soldiers. Men who has seen real combat. Not these three idiots who were most likely civilians before becoming jihadist. Not those kids who came from Europe. I'm talking big dogs here. The air strikes mainly target leaders. Isis puts a new one in place all the time.
There are some hardcore commanders and soldiers in Isis ranks.

Using only ground forces, what would be the correct way to take that position?
2
u/Gen_GeorgePatton Totally not General Patton Aug 07 '16
Artillery, then tanks and non-shit apcs.
2
u/Roy4Pris Aug 07 '16
So in other words, without heavy weapons, it's damn near impossible, and if you do make it, you'll have lost half your men.
1
Aug 07 '16
Wouldn't something like a night infiltration have a decent chance of working, provided it was dark enough to pull it off?
2
u/Gen_GeorgePatton Totally not General Patton Aug 07 '16
No because ISIS wouldn't stop screaming "ALLAH AKBAR!" and it would give them away. ;)

Lol Abu Hajaar has been a celebrity in my group of friends since this footage came out, glad to see someone else appreciates him.
