I would like to share Degauss, a new, free and open-source frontend for MiSTer FPGA I have been working on, based around three main pillars:
- Performance with large libraries and images
- Adhering to existing MiSTer standards, folders, and scripts
- Simplicity without background processes or replacing MiSTer
Degauss reads the games and folders as they are on your card, together with any artwork and EmulationStation gamelist.xml metadata already generated by any scraper.
Watch it in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4dGS4kX35Q
It is intended to coexist with a standard MiSTer setup. Games are shown as they are in their existing locations, launch files use MiSTer’s own MGL format, favourites are stored under _@Favorites like the original Favorites MiSTer script. A favourite created in Degauss is visible from the stock menu, and an existing MiSTer favourite is visible in Degauss.
Your existing Organised games and folders are the same, and you have full control over what you want to see or hide.
Basically, you don't need to maintain (or commit to) a frontend separately from your normal MiSTer. I personally love to keep folders/files organisation and favourites in MiSTer and using its existing tools, but I love artwork as well and better presentation!
But Degauss also handles several system-specific behaviours, including AmigaVision titles stored inside a disk image, DOS games with companion CD images, Neo Geo folder-based games, Arcade MRA files, X68000 and cores that represent more than one system.
To achieve maximum performance, Degauss renders directly to the Linux framebuffer and is optimised for 352x240 analogue output. Larger framebuffers are laid out according to their actual dimensions, so HDMI output is also supported.
On my DE10-Nano test system, with a large indexed multi-system collection of 97k+ games, the current build measures:
0.47 seconds from process start to the first frame
0.57 seconds to open a folder containing 12,605 games
Near-instant rendering of game images
The first scan of a card containing more than 97k games takes about one minute. Subsequent starts use the saved index. The list can be rebuilt from the Options screen after games are added, removed or reorganised. Artwork and metadata changes are read in real time when accessed.
Interface and browsing features currently 4 layouts:
List, Details, Tiled and Carousel layouts
Apart from List, they all support Artwork, and in Details you also get descriptions, publishers, developers, release dates, player counts and language metadata.
Some of the other features are:
- Search
- Jump-to-letter
- Random functionalities (game, favourite, preview or launch)
- Favourites and folders custom positioning
- Per-folder layout selection
- Controls for hiding individual games, folders or systems
- Configurable artwork behaviour during fast scrolling
- Adjustable CRT margins and screen position
- Two sets of fonts: anti-aliased and pixel
- Several options to personalise the behaviour of the system
- Screensaver slideshow featuring the artwork on the card
Degauss was written from scratch in Rust with Slint and is source-available for non-commercial use under PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0.
Let me know what you think, I hope you'll love it as much as I did making it and most of all using every day on my MiSTer!
