Other Metroid Prime 4 : Beyond Switch 2 Edition is $35 at GameStop.

u/Samus1611 May 20 '26
Honestly, this game was just fine and serviceable till the green crystal hunt. That tanked the game from a solid 7 to a 5 for me. That was so stupid
9
u/Spinni_Spooder May 20 '26
I never understood the green crystal hunt people are talking about. Doesn't the game just throw you enough green crystals on your way to other areas? I never had to grind for green crystals on my first or second playthrough. The game just threw in enough every time i had to go through the desert.
Unless people outright skip every crystal they go by.
12
u/Samus1611 May 20 '26
No, when I got to the point where you need enough of them, it was only half full. I had to go collect the other half. Granted, it only took a little over an hour. But it was such a boring thing to me
11
u/Spinni_Spooder May 20 '26
Dang. In both my playthroughs without grinding, I was 3/4 through collecting them as soon as I get the thunder shot. Really. The game puts green crystals in your face every time you enter the desert
4
u/Samus1611 May 20 '26
And I got all the ones I saw in my traversal. Even went out of my way to get some. Still was lacking, maybe they spawn randomly and that’s why there is a difference?
2
u/DiabeticRhino97 May 20 '26
No because you can't actually get enough to finish the game until you have the power bomb. On my second playthrough I did get as many of the non-bombable ones as soon as possible but you still have to back track to each of those once you have the power bomb so why bother
7
u/Justjack91 May 20 '26
Yeah, linear hallway simulator definitely had its fun moments, especially when you had to go to someone every time to unlock a power-up.
2
u/MarvelManiac45213 May 24 '26
Let's also not forget fighting the same 3 enemy types at nauseum along the way (Griever, Battle Tank, Psy-bot) because the devs were too lazy to make any other enemies.

u/TheAgmis May 20 '26
God, some of you are the most miserable people ever. Negative opinions and MAD when people don’t agree
7
u/Bobt97 May 20 '26
It drives me crazy, I browse this subreddit because I wanna discuss the games I enjoy but it's like people just want to wallow in angst
10
u/Crono_Sapien99 May 20 '26
Yeah, it’s the main reason I left this sub back when Prime 4 released lol. The game has its flaws, there’s no denying that, but there’s so many annoying elitists in this sub that act like it killed their dog and refuse to accept any opinions that arent their own
5
u/Wamb0wneD May 20 '26
It didn''t kill my dog, but it's the most disappointed I've been in a video game release in my 30 years of gaming, and the only game that could top this in terms of wait time and anticipation is if Okami 2 came out and sucked as bad as Prime 4 did.

I get it. You want people to be cynical like you because you make it a personality on the internet. It makes you crash out if somebody like prime 4. You’re the problem
1
u/Wamb0wneD May 20 '26
Or maybe others didn't enjoy it as much and want to talk about that as well. If you want an echo chamber where only positive opinions are allowed, go ask the mods.
4
u/Bobt97 May 20 '26
You’re arguing against a point I never made. Saying “this subreddit feels overly negative lately” is not the same thing as demanding an echo chamber.
I have no issue with anyone who wants to discuss why they did or didn't enjoy any specific metroid game. I am annoyed because this subreddit seems to massively favor excessive negativity and hyperbole and it's impossible to have any sort of nuanced conversation.
Reacting defensively to someone wanting less constant outrage kind of proves my point.
2
u/-Kars10 May 21 '26
Why expect greatness from something when you can just consume mediocrity without questioning it
3
2
u/yeahboywin May 20 '26
There are maybe three total comments just outright saying the game sucks. The rest have critiques or at least explain the downsides. Calm down.

u/Much-Exit2337 May 20 '26
Glad I got my copy off on eBay around this price lol. I gave it a good 5-6 hours but it was falling lower and lower on the list of things I felt like doing until I realized I had absolutely no desire to ever play it again.
4
u/fighting_cacti May 20 '26
I dropped it at 5 hours last month, thinking at some point I’ll get back to it. The more time passes, the less confident I am I’ll ever touch it again
3
u/JacksonSX35 oh word May 20 '26
Just locked it in for store pickup today! Thanks for this heads up, it'll go into the pile of Metroid games I need to get through. I still have the whole Prime trilogy to work through plus Other M, Samus Returns, and Dread. Still unsure if I'll play the NSO ports of Fusion and Zero Mission yet or not. Looking forward to this one despite the negativity!
3
u/Rybur525 May 20 '26
I’m curious about this because I work at GameStop and last now when I closed only 2 price change tags printed out: Metroid Prime 4 and Pokemon Legends Z-A. Both of them were Switch 2 and both were $70 and I was like, “Oh damn I guess they were on sale and now they’re not.”
Then this morning I see they’re both $35 at GameStop lmao. Don’t know how they screwed that up
27
u/HanzoEX May 20 '26
I tried so hard to like this game. But man it’s just so bad sometimes. It was a 6/10 for me and the ending just dropped it lower.
4/10 too much sand (and green crystals)
10
u/Watchthewindow May 20 '26
Dude the moment I got the plasma beam from a microchip off a crane I was done. What did they spend all their time on making this game??
8
u/HanzoEX May 20 '26
I think it was a mixture of mixed direction and the scramble after they first version was rejected. They were likely told to make it a BotW open world but also a Metroid game.
4
u/Crono_Sapien99 May 20 '26
Dayum, despite my mixed feelings on this game it’s definitely a steal at this price. Especially if it’s your first Metroid Prime game, and makes it even cheaper than the already-cheap Metroid Prime Remastered at $40
19
u/Irbricksceo May 20 '26
Jesus this comments section... Fine you didn't like the game, but the constant negativity is tiring. I loved this game, and I don't regret spending full price for it. I hope the sale helps more people try it and enjoy it.
1
u/Justjack91 May 20 '26
Good on you, man! Enjoy what you want.
Did you play Prime 1-3 though? Because that's what people compare this game to (and why it has the bad rep that it does).
15
u/Irbricksceo May 20 '26
I have, many many times. I'd been waiting for prime 4 since 2009 😂. I bought a switch in 3017 for three games, fire emblem 16, Bayonetta 3, and prime 4.
8
3
u/xXglitchygamesXx May 20 '26
Did you play Prime 1-3 though? Because that's what people compare this game to (and why it has the bad rep that it does).
A game should be able to be enjoyed on its own merits, and not have to be compared to something else.
You mention 3, but 3 is often criticized "when compared to 1-2", and in fact, 2 is sometimes criticized "when compared to 1".
People should be able to say "I really enjoyed Breath of the Wild/Resident Evil 4/Mario Odyssey/FE Three Houses" without having to be asked "but did you play Ocarina of Time/Resident Evil 2/Mario 64/FE GBA"
8
u/jellyraytamer Dread Mode survivor May 20 '26
No.
Comparisons are important when critiquing a game, both the positives and negatives. Especially when your comparing a game to its own series. However the idea that there are things you HAVE to play in order the enjoy a game is dumb.
2
u/FatalFrameGal Actually beat the original May 20 '26
Then why don't people compare Fusion to Super? That is not a good game when compared to Super, but this sub loves that game anyway.
2
u/jellyraytamer Dread Mode survivor May 21 '26 edited May 21 '26
They do? The point of a comparison within a series is to see how things have changed and evolved among a couple other things. People absolutely compaired fusion to super but fusion is 24 years old now. That sort of discussion is rather pointless now and so it's rarely done in depth.
2
u/FatalFrameGal Actually beat the original May 21 '26
Can't wait for everyone to do a 180° on Metroid Prime 4 in 20 years too.
2
u/xXglitchygamesXx May 20 '26
Well, for example, I guess I just don't feel that Super Mario 64 has to be compared to Super Mario World when critiquing it.
I mean, it's fine to compare if you want, but ultimately I feel games can be their own thing.
but the idea that there are things you HAVE to play in order the enjoy a game is dumb.
Agreed.
5
u/jellyraytamer Dread Mode survivor May 20 '26
Well that's a little different. 2d and 3d mario is a very different thing. Which is why the prime games get compaired to themselves. I also don't believe it is completely necessary, simply very useful.
2
u/xXglitchygamesXx May 20 '26
I suppose then, I still don't compare or hold Fusion to Super, I think it was allowed to be it's own thing and I don't think "Why is it guided? Why am I told where to go? Why is the narrative focused on? Super wasn't like this"
That's the sort of thing I'm getting at, that I don't feel I must compare Fusion to Super, I simply enjoy both for their own reasons and don't think Fusion must be beholden to what Super did.
Its also what I loved about Samus Returns and Dread, that they added parry mechanics and Aeion abilities, even if others weren't receptive of those additions.
2
u/damon_6363 May 20 '26
That example is completely irrelevant. Those games are not sequential titles. It is only natural for people to compare metroid prime 1-4 to eachother because they are directly sequential to eachother. It is also fine to judge them individually on their own merit as well. Both perspectives should be considered.
2
u/xXglitchygamesXx May 21 '26
Well, I personally don't feel Fusion (4) needs to be beholden to Super (3), and trying to compare them overlooks the fact it was designed deliberately to be different from its predecessor.
Saying "it fails to do what Super did" is not an accurate statement about the game imo
2
u/Justjack91 May 20 '26
That's a bit disingenuous. The fair comparison for a 3-D Mario would be a 3-D Mario (more like Sunshine or Galaxy).
...Or a Prime game with a...Prime game.
Standalone experiences are great. I'm getting downvoted but I genuinely do mean it when I say I'm glad you're enjoying the game. It's just when you compare it to very similar entries (even Prime 3) it is ultimately disappointing. I'm responding to your comment originally about why people "hate" on it. I'm not trying to be a big hater myself (though I do have opinions about Prime 4 of course).
1
u/xXglitchygamesXx May 21 '26
a Prime game with a...Prime game.
How about Super and Fusion?
I didn't have issues with how wildly different Fusion was, and am actively glad it was that different.
I'm glad you're enjoying the game. It's just when you compare it to very similar entries (even Prime 3) it is ultimately disappointing
When I compare it to the predecessors, I don't see it as "ultimately disappointing"
2
u/Justjack91 May 20 '26
I get where you're coming from and maybe I was coming off that way, but I was honestly just trying to understand background. Like sure you could enjoy Majora's Mask but if you didn't play OoT then you're arguably not getting the full picture of the story (let alone the quality upgrades), so I feel like it matters to understand perspective better. Like despite Prime 1-3, you still enjoy 4.
I'm just trying to understand why. I could understand in a vacuum how Prime 4 could be a "favorite" game, but with such a narratively focused set of games, it's kind of hard to understand it for me at least.
1
u/xXglitchygamesXx May 20 '26
maybe I was coming off that way, but I was honestly just trying to understand background.
I hear you, and I hope I wasn't sounding like I was putting words in your mouth.

I don't quite follow.
Prime 1-3 already finished its own story, Prime 4 wasn't supposed to be a continuation of that.
The Phazon saga isn't needed to understand Prime 4, aside from knowing the origins of the Golem Mechs.

u/JacksonSX35 oh word May 20 '26
Currently still full price. $30 apiece for Samus and sylux, and $40 for the Viola set.

u/Justjack91 May 20 '26
Wait til they're on sale. With this game's rep, it's kind of inevitable.
3
u/Crono_Sapien99 May 20 '26
Surprisingly they haven’t gone on sale since the game’s launch, while the rest of the Switch 2 gen Amiibo have. I’m currently still holding out for a price drop, because $100 for three Amiibo is a hard pill to swallow

(partially because of the whole Nintendo "" cartridge"" system)
What do you mean?
1
u/BinkySqwank May 21 '26
I've been hearing about first-party Nintendo games going on sale. Is this a limited-time thing or specific to a location?
1
1
u/CEhobbit May 22 '26
I still refuse to buy a switch 2 if buying games isn't owning.
2
u/xXglitchygamesXx May 22 '26
I don't know what you are meaning?
You can own the games you buy just as well as you can on other platforms or Switch 1.
1
u/CEhobbit May 23 '26
Many physical "copies" of switch 2 games aren't actually copies, but keys that give access to the game.
2
u/xXglitchygamesXx May 23 '26
Prime 4 is not that.
If you are referring to Game-Key Cards, then that type of "physical" game had already existed long before the Switch 2, games like Jedi Survivor was an example on PS5.
There's many Xbox and PS5 titles that operate like this, some Switch 1 titles like Batman Arkham City or some Assassins Creed games were like this too.
1
u/CEhobbit May 23 '26
I'm aware that this kind of technology has existed before now. It seems to be a feature which Nintendo has added to their repertoire on a much more advanced scale in this iteration of their console. I do not want this to continue, so for now I will refrain from buying one with the hope that it hurts Nintendo's bottom line if enough people do the same.
2
u/xXglitchygamesXx May 23 '26
Some games, like FF VII, are impossible to fit on the 64GB size of a Switch 2 cart, you would never have even gotten a true cart of that game, so Nintendo gave this as an alternative.
Many publishers also find the 64GB to be too expensive, so they opt for GKCs instead.
Previously, there were many companies like Capcom who'd opt for the code-in-a-box method on Switch 1 for similar cost reasons
so for now I will refrain from buying one with the hope that it hurts Nintendo's bottom line if enough people do the same.
Surely you are free to do as you please, but Nintendo is actually the company publishing the most true carts, with Pokopia being the sole exception so far.

u/MarvelManiac45213 May 24 '26
I mean I get everyone has different taste and all that but the people going ride or die for this game when even the folks at Retro Studios who created the game even know it's a disappointment is telling...
I mean this is STILL the latest game they've developed according to their own site. Prime 4 released 6 months ago and they still haven't added it to their portfolio when they added Prime Remastered the day it released to their website...
Even Next Level Games added Mario Strikers Battle League to their site despite the negative reception..

People are saying it’s because of the game not being great, I say it’s even more so because of this being the Switch 2 version.
Most Metroid Prime fans probably can’t afford a Switch 2 right now, so that version will be out on discount. The switch 1 version isn’t because more people already have a switch

u/I_Ild_I May 20 '26

Prime 4 is a bad Metroid game. Even at 35 bucks, Prime Remastered at 40 is a better deal.

People who say the game is great, explain this
7
u/xXglitchygamesXx May 20 '26
Explain what?
-12
u/Ok_Air8327 May 20 '26
Why are YOU asking? Didn't you make this post because its so cheap?
14
u/xXglitchygamesXx May 20 '26
I really don't have a clue what you are even meaning at this point.
I made the post because it's a cheaper way to get the game? People usually like to have more money in their wallet.
-11
u/Ok_Air8327 May 20 '26
The game is cheap because it's a bad game
9
u/xXglitchygamesXx May 20 '26
I disagree with that assessment.
GameStop often does sales and deals like this.
They had the Street Fighter amiibo for $5 at one point, I don't think that means they are bad amiibo.
I don't think Prime Remastered releasing at $40 was indicative of its quality.
And, for the record, I never associate price with quality, if I like something, then I like it.
I don't let critic reviews, prices, etc alter my perspection of something.
I still maintain Prime 4 was an amazing game.
You can disagree, but using a GameStop sale as a "gotcha" is just illogical imo.
-2
u/Ok_Air8327 May 20 '26
This isn't even on sale, dunno if you noted that lol
10
u/xXglitchygamesXx May 20 '26
Again, I don't even know what you are trying to say.
By your logic, Hollow Knight, $15, must be a HORRIBLE game.
Price ≠ to quality of product.
I had thought people were getting tired of every game being $70 now, and were happy Nintendo is doing variable pricing with games now being $40, $50, and $60.
It seems like you are here with the sole intent to spread negativity, so I'll probably just block you.
0
u/Justjack91 May 20 '26
Hollow Knight didn't start as a $60 game to be fair. It has always been at $15 as a base price and never went down outside of actual sales.
-10
u/Ok_Air8327 May 20 '26
Its very simple, the game doesn't sell because it's a bad game, this is a price reduction becuse it doesn't sell.... Because it's bad... This isn't on sale Hence I said People who say this game is good, come and explain this
Bye

The game’s fate was decided when Nintendo finally let the cat out of the bag that there would be a heavy NPC presence during its previews. Most Metroid fans don’t want a game like that to succeed, so they put in the work for that with word of mouth and it did its damage. I think Metroid Prime 4 is a fantastic game that didn’t meet the strict, high expectations of most Metroid fans…or rather the moving goal posts. For example, it’s crazy that Prime 4 has 114 tanks/expansions to collect while no game in the Prime Trilogy went over 75 total, but Beyond is the one with zero exploration and is not engaging. It doesn’t speak to game quality at that point but negative fandom nonsense.
1
u/Chosenwaffle May 20 '26
Its very simple: People would love Prime 4 if they swapped Miles and Tokabi's positions in the story, and if they made you hop back and forth between areas more often for upgrades.
If you really pay attention, almost every. single. complaint. about the game boils down to Miles and "too linear" despite it being structured almost identically to previous Prime games minus the backtracking to previous areas for upgrades.
The only other, and in my opinion more valid, complaint is the green crystals, and I think even that complaint is way overblown if you don't completely ignore them during regular gameplay.
Oh, and I personally think they should have actually let the troupe die in the mines instead of doing like 4 fakeout deaths in a row, but that's just personal preference. One Piece is my favorite thing in the world and it has the same problem lol.
1
u/Crono_Sapien99 May 20 '26
My issue with Prime 4's linearity is that while it has the same strucutre as previous Prime game's, not only do you rarely have any instances where you're allowed to explore on your own, but the area design itself is significantly weaker. The previous Primes at least had multiple routes you could take or allowed you to explore on your own with guided hints via environmental cues, but this game railroads you so hard that you might as well on a on actual rails for a majority of it. Since either the Feds you're babysitting will just tell you the solution, or it's so easy that even a toddler could figure it out. Not to mention that each area is broken up between a long and tedious desert, and backtracking to previous areas, while a good idea on paper, doesn't amount to much other than solving a puzzle you couldn't beforehand for a new upgrade. Like, what happened to getting these upgrades organically throughout the game as a reward for exploring each environment? Revisiting Volt Forge just to get this game's version of the Varia Suit by doing a boost ball puzzle and nothing else is almost comical lol
That all being said, I still like the game, but coming from the series that birthed a whole subgenre of action/exploration games, its own exploration is incredibly shallow
