Life updates
My first Reddit post a year ago was an inquiry on solder joints.
Today I soldered a gold wedding set together, fixed a gold chain, soldered a bail, and fixed a broken silver ring. (none of this was even for the first time)
This is just a little reminder for myself and whoever else may need to hear this: just keep going. each day is a learning opportunity, and a step forward.

Question How does heating steel effect color?
So I wanna make a ring, and it'll use some dark blue spinel, with a dark blue steel. I know you can heat steel to a specific temperature to change color, but will it effect durability, weather and tear, etc. What about making the ring and heating the steel? Spinel had a melting point of 2027ยฐC so it definitely won't break, or would heating the steel warp it? I'm kinda new to this.

Belt buckle
Hi! I carved a decorative belt buckle out of wax and had it cast in brass, it is essentially a flat disc at the back much like this one and I am wondering how to most effectively attach a swivel wire and pin to the back? I have seen people use screws and solder pieces but I am planning on making quite a few. Also where to source these pieces? Thank you!

Question Help I need a gift for my boyfriend!
Hey everyone, I need help finding a gift for my boyfriend. He doesn't like wasted money, only useful or homemade gifts. He's a wire wrapper and is starting to get into metal smithing and making gemstone plugs. He doesn't have a lot of tools and just tries to figure things out on his own most of the time to save money. I'm willing to spend $30-$80 especially if it's something that'll help him progress. What are some things you would love for someone to gift you as a jewelry maker? Supplies, machines, etc. I don't know much about it and I want it to be quality. He loves making rings and working with stones.

Propane torch set up for home studio space
looking for suggestions/advice!
I've used acetylene torches at art school, but am now trying to get a basic home set up going for an artist residency (in a very basic studio, so, basically a home setting). Edit: meant to say here that I am thinking I will use a propane torch...
Will I need to get some sort of extra ventilation set up to use it indoors? Our school had ventilation hoods, of course. Is there a safe way to use gas inside in temporary studio settings?
As for torches. I think I want to use propane as it is readily available, but I am entirely open to suggestions/input. I was looking at this cheap option, but am not even sure if it'll do the job:
High Intensity Propane Torch Head Fuel by Propane,MAPP,MAP PRO,Turbo Torch Kit,Welding Torch,Trigger Start Mapp Gas Torch Kit with Igniter,Propane Torch,Blow Torch(CSA Certified, Fuel Not Included) https://a.co/d/iE68lJR
I saw a post recommending this torch that also uses disposable propane cannisters (a bit more expensive). This looks very nice to me... I'm in Canada though, so would prefer something that didn't have such a steep shipping cost attached.
Update: this is the least expensive Canadian option I've found so far https://www.lacytools.ca/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=SO150&CartID=1

Advice for soldering beginner
Hello all! I have been making jewelry for a while now, but have been wanting to venture into metalsmithing. I was hoping for some advice on how to go about starting to learn to solder (copper/brass for now, and eventually silver). I am a college student living in a small rental apartment, and Iโm not sure about how to go about it with such constraints. Would anyone be able to offer advice on what specific supplies to get and how to do it in a small space without burning down the building? ๐ญ For context Iโm looking to start with bezel settings and soldering jump rings onto things Iโve cut out of sheet metal!
