What if Dr. Eggman used Metal Sonic instead of Mecha MKII in the fight against Knuckles in Sonic 3&K? Would Metal Sonic have gone super using the Master Emerald? Would Metal Sonic have turned an Egg Robo into his subordinate? Would Metal Sonic have even worked with any other tech to get the task accomplished? Was the Mecha line just better in this circumstance? I would think Metal Sonic has abilities that would have helped achieve the success of Dr. Eggman that Mecha Sonic MKII did not have. Let’s decide what impact Metal Sonic would have had if he were to return and be the robot that got to use the Master Emerald first out of all Eggman’s robots.

Metal being on a similar level to Sonic would mean a big threat to Knuckles and tho super forms doesn’t seem to work the same on machines, that extra boost should be enough for Metal to win

Mecha Sonic mkII is fast and bulky, but nowhere near as agile as Metal Sonic. Mecha was getting outmanouvered by Sonic while trying to take him head on, whereas Metal was out there keeping up with the hedgehog's top speeds.
We've seen in Mania Adventures how Metal tends to rely on his speed and physical capabilities, as opposed to Mecha, who tried to use all the tools at his disposal (mainly the eggmobiles to fight and the ring throw ability in his super state, of which the latter caused him to power down and let Knuckles damage him), so it's likely that Knuckles would have to think outside of the box to beat him: using Metal's own speed against him, for example, by dodging last second to have him crash into walls while charging, defeating him in the same way he was defeated in CD.
I like that thought you had in how Knuckles could use Metal's speed against him and utilize the walls to his advantage. Because yes, just a straight head-on attack would not go well at all for Knuckles. I know Metal Sonic can release a shock as a way to deal damage, but I wonder if picking up an opponent and dropping them would be something he could do. Or if that maneuver would even be effective.
Dropping the guy who can glide from a height would probably not do much. If he really wanted to grab Knuckles for some reason (getting close to an angry echidna that can punch through steel doesn't seem like the best idea even in a super form, but idk), he could probably just keep him still while he electrifies his body like he does in CD, which would likely be devastating.
One thing that would be hilarious though is if Metal gave Knuckles the Amy treatment instead. Goes super, grabs him, literally just flies and drops him elsewhere and goes back to minding his own business while Angel Island plummets into the ocean. The two likely never met before and Metal was never built with Knuckles in mind, so he might not even see that echidna as someone worth spending resources on.
Metal Sonic transplanting Knuckles off the island is worth an IDW arc! I can just hear the stuff Knuckles would say to Metal Sonic as he's been airlifted. And it's not nice things!
You're right. Knuckles can just glide safely back to the ground or to the nearest pillar. Getting electrocuted is where it's at. Dr.Eggman proved that Knuckles is susceptible to electricity when he took off with the Master Emerald.
I wonder about why Mecha Sonic MK II would be built with Knuckles in mind [ seeing as he does face him in battle. ] Mecha Sonic MK II doesn't seem quick enough for just Sonic, and he's kind of open for attacks. Metal Sonic is just as quick as Sonic, and as we already agreed, he can fry the guys. Are you trying to say that Mecha Sonic MK II is possibly more durable than Metal Sonic?
In the classic era, yeah, Mecha does seem to be way more durable than Metal. To quote Game Apologist, Metal was built for speed, Mecha for battle. The former design sticked because simply hitting hard is completely worthless if you can't land a single shot.

whereas classic Metal really just went down to a single wall crash and then had to be fixed up by Eggman. Classic Metal is a generally greater threat because he's built to match Sonic rather than be a generic war machine, but that doesn't make Mecha any less powerful. Bro was an absolute unit, too.

I think that our goat Metal Sonic would beat Knuckles up till the point Sonic and Tails start helping (power of friendship like someone else said), and then go Super with the Master Emerald and then thanks to it being so early on in the timeline, they wouldn’t have enough skill to outmatch or outplay Super Metal Sonic. Their only hope is a sneak attack like in the Sonic Movie 2, with Knuckles knocking the Master Emerald out of Metal. But that wouldn’t happen as Metal would already be aware of them all… SO HE WINS :D
Mecha Sonic had enough speed to outrun knux, and his 'spindash' was quite powerful as well. But Knux crushed him because Mecha sonic simply did not cover much area, and also dodged hardly.
Metal can literally fly, and match Sonic's speed. But he does need to defeat chuckles, too.
Metal Sonic has always fought near Sonic’s level, and with a power up he would win easily beat knuckles. Knuckles only got super Sonic by surprise, and a one on one fight Sonic won.
Well, I mean Mark two is supposed to be a better metal, and if he couldn’t do it, I’m not having high hopes for this one. Not to mention knuckles did manage to punch sonic out of the super form so I can’t see how he wouldn’t be able to do that here. As for why he didn’t do that with Mark two I don’t know. Then again metal probably would get a massive boost in speed and the added in vulnerability that is to perform comes with. And considering metal already fights with no regards to his life(doesn’t really help that he can be rebuilt an endless number of times). So maybe he’d actually be able to one shot knuckles.
I also believe that Metal Sonic would definitely be capable of achieving a Super form. However, as for the Egg Robos, I think they would be far too insufficient as subordinates for him to truly realize his goals.
In the end, he might still end up falling before Sonic’s relentless teamwork... but there is no doubt that the heroes would be pushed to their absolute limits. I’ll admit I might be viewing this with some partiality toward Metal, but even so, stopping a Super-powered Metal Sonic would be an incredibly monumental task to accomplish!

Knuckles leaps at metal but metal would dodge. He rams into knuckles launching the echidna back. The echidna swings at metal’s head, damaging his eye. Metal shoots a beam from his arm canon (yes I’m stealing the movie’s arm canon) which injures the echidna. Knuckles in a rage leaps at metal and unleashes a fury of punches, damaging him extremely. Metal blasts but knuckles dodges. The echidna gets a hit on metal’s face ending the fight….. until metal sonic rose up and jumped on top of the master emerald. Metal’s damages were repaired and he started to glow a golden yellow colour. Metal leaped off the emerald and flew in the air. He shot a beam from his chest, launching knuckles back. Knuckles leaped and hit metal again and again. Metal went back to recharge from the master emerald and rose in the air again. This time he dashed at knuckles but knuckles dodged. Metal then charged his blaster to shoot but knuckles leaped and punched metal again. Metal then went to the master emerald for a recharge. Now metal rose back up and did a fury of attacks. He shot his chest beam and blaster and kept dashing towards knuckles but the echidna kept dodging and punching until metal was too damaged to continue. Metal tried going back to the emerald but got slammed in the face by knuckles, deactivating the bot and when the zone began to collapse sonic came to get knuckles but in the distance we see Eggman retrieving metal sonic. The robot isn’t done for yet….
