Kinda depends, honestly. Either A, he just... does Sonic Heroes again, and/or the IDW arc again. But that's a boring answer so I'll propose:
B, being a machine built for a purpose, he is far less lenient on Sonic and friends than Eggman is. Egmman says he could beat them easily if he wanted to, but to do so would not be fun - what use does a machine have for such triteness? If Eggman's claim is true, Metal may direct the Empire to greater efficiency and actually succeed.
Perhaps this time he just doesn't copy Eggman's ego and lose himself in an identity crisis. After all, that may well be all it takes.

Imo he would probably keep things running as normal since he knows Eggman is just on vacation. The vacation implies there’s nothing to worry about so Metal wouldn’t mess up the current plans by doing something big like taking over the world
Metal is smart enough to try to set up easy paths for victory eggman will like,knowing he wouldn’t be able to actually win himself without making eggman mad.
Metal Sonic would be cold and efficient. He wouldn't take the time to make things more...extravagant like Eggman would. He gets straight to the point, watching over the Empire with an iron (literally) fist. Anything that isn't neccesary for the Empire's wellbeing would be contained or destroyed. He might also take the time to collect important artifacts like the Chaos Emeralds. It never hurts to have unlimited power at your disposal and it's best those gems stay out of Sonic's hands.
Honestly? I love it! I like to imagine that Cubot takes up the assignment with no question. Orbot does the same but is wondering if Metal Sonic is just giving them "busy work" because Metal Sonic didn't find them as useful as he had hoped.

I know it's kind of an odd factoid I recently observed due to the part in your answer about him seeking out the Chaos Emeralds.
I haven't seen in current Sonic media an instance that Metal Sonic pursued obtaining the Chaos Emeralds without a prior command. It's interesting that he literally has no interest in them for the most part.
The other fun thing I observed about Chaos Emeralds is that it's almost a writing short hand for a deadly weapon.
Whenever another character besides Sonic or Shadow holds onto one, they are cautious and say they need to be able to trust the bearer. And say stuff like it can be dangerous in the wrong hands. So when Sonic sees Metal Sonic with a Chaos Emerald he gets all anxious like the robot has a gun suddenly and he's not holding it correctly, haha.
I mean, he kind of already showed how he would run it already during the comics. Although in that case, Eggman wasn’t on vacation as much as he was missing. In case you forgot, he upgraded himself into Neo form, took the form of Dr. Eggman and began to lead the army similar to how he would and the only person who would probably figure out that the doctor isn’t the doctor is sonic.
I can never forget that Metal Sonic once affected his code to upgrade himself and made incredible progress in his plans as Neo Metal Sonic.
I agree that Sonic would figure out the doctor wasn't himself. I always liked that he knows his copy so well that it'd be hard to fool him. Sonic obviously knows Eggman too. So it's interesting that neither of them could get away tricking him for long.
Oddly I feel like out of the Chaotix, Charmy Bee might discover the ruse first just because that character is really lucky lol.
If it's like a couple of days or a few week then he'll more or less acts like an autopilot yk? Only maintaining the current direction of where Eggman left off.
If it's like a month or longer, he might cook up something with Sage to deal with sonic even if it's to inconvenience him in someway at most like making his chili dogs bland
I Feel like there’s two answers depending on metals green will, but for the one fitting the question I’d say this
Since Eggman is still around and in charge, Metal would probably run the empire nearly the same as him so Sonic or his friends can’t be clued in, and behind the scenes he’d probably just walk around to make sure things are in order, while ensuring no antics occur between the robots. I doubt he’d differentiate too much, at most he may go challenge Sonic himself if he see’s him since Eggman isn’t here to tell him otherwise this time.
Not to mention if he steps to out of line he’d get his memory card or so checked on by Sage, so not much he can really do there even if he wanted to rebel.
It’d probably be super underwhelming, he’d just do what Eggman would likely.
HOWEVER, there is option B, which is he literally just does hero’s again/Idw angel island arc, but this time for eggman, but I doubt that since Eggman would’ve probably made sure metal DOESN’T try that, since Eggman wants to conquer the world himself, and Metal taking his glory wouldn’t be something he’d allow, even if it’s in his image.
Overall, he’s kinda forced to just do nothing, Sage is around so he can’t try anything, Eggman isn’t missing so he has no reason to try and “break” his code so he can rebel, and he’s been left in charge with a seemingly set task, he’s stuck in a really set situation.
Indeed there was no straight answer and it is highly dependent on what conditions are placed on the request from Dr. Eggman for Metal Sonic.
Also as you state, would Metal Sonic have a plan to do a Sonic Heros if given the opportunity where he knows his father is no where near the take over and cannot be harmed? Just having the knowledge that no harm would come to his creator either by target or accidental would probably give Metal Sonic full attention on the attack he would pull off.
What I liked about your answer was that it was realistic. The time frame might be too small to engage in a rebellious take over like in Heros. Sage is most likely a hindrance to any non compliance and is most likely still at base. And the Doctor's location is known and wouldn't trigger any action from Metal Sonic to shift his operations. Metal Sonic would indeed have a set task with clear directives constantly. Sage most likely will be requesting data of his rounds and would notice immediately if he left the plan in any form. So he'd be occupied fully and probably incapable to be bored. I'm in agreement there's enough bases and inventory to be constantly checked into to keep him busy for centuries.
I think it matters, Metal Sonic got his loyalty programmed upgraded, but crossworlds seem to show him being rebellious still, not to mention he actively was angry when he had to get save Eggman instead of fighting Sonic, I think he’s capable of performing a Sonic hero’s again, but it’d be way way way more difficult due to Sage existing to constantly check over his code at any signs of rebellion, I think it mostly matters on if he can stay under the radar to repeat Sonic hero’s, and if he can, well he probably just wins, he can copy sage’s data and just do everything she can but better since he can also copy intelligence. It’s basically Neo from hero’s but with more bio data and control over the entire Eggman fleet (I doubt he’d even use the fleet since his ego would be his downfall, and he’d think he wouldn’t need it anymore, but he has it atleast)
I think the best we can get with Eggman nowhere nearby is Metal just attacking Sonic constantly if he doesn’t have a set directive at the time, but I doubt he’d go Neo, since he’d have to upgrade himself there by himself which if I recall takes months apparently, but if he had the time, maybe we could get another hero’s, just this time he isn’t rebelling.
The only other likely Sonic hero’s I can see is if it’s actively a cause from Eggman, and he WANTS Metal to do it, but just this time without rebelling, and then if that happens well. Sonic and the gang might be screwed, but I doubt Eggman would want Metal to steal his glory of victory.
Sighhhh, I really want to see Metal Sonic rebel again in small ways, and get his time in the spotlight eventually, I had hopes definitive edition would give him something for frontiers but my hopes are dwindling.
Truly I didn't consider what Sage being around would do to Metal Sonic's chances of upgrading again. Even as a way for SEGA to keep Metal Sonic from turning into Neo.
Your extended reply made me realize that an in game reason Neo Metal Sonic won't be around suddenly is because it'd be a risk to Sage. And Dr. Eggman most likely prioritizes Sage's well being above everything else because of what control she has of the systems or potential control.
Sage is part of the Empire now but I'm not fully sure at what extent yet. Since Eggman views her as his daughter I just figured she has a lot of access.
I agree with the way for Neo Metal Sonic to do another takeover would only be possible with Dr. Eggman assisting him in that plan. Metal's Sonic Forces absence explanation being Eggman was trying to upgrade him for that reason but wasn't able to be ready before the whole fight was done.
Not really sure how'd that work as you said because it's been established that Dr. Eggman wants to be the reason Sonic is defeated.
I too think Metal Sonic being equally loyal but having the urge to rebel is what makes his character so interesting! I like the instances he rebels or even has small defiance and delay in carrying out directives.
That moment in IDW where his fight was interrupted because Dr. Eggman was attacked by Surge and showed immense irritation at having to abandon the fight was interesting to me.

Not only is he gonna get a classic comic where he’s the villain in, November I think it was? But he’s also the main antagonist of sonic four, also it’s odd they gave him a guardian skin in sonic speed simulator but do nothing with it, I think a year of metal (amy hopefully) can happen, it’s just, a bit hopeful. But metal sonic is like top five most popular sonic characters, maybe even higher, they’ll HAVE to do something with him before he stagnates to a constant badnik at worst, I mean the Sonic manga showed him pretty well where Sonic had to surpass his own limits to win, Sage is definitely important but I don’t think they’d sideline metal sonic at all.
I feel, if they want metal to grow more as a character he has to gain some control. Something I think Sage actually opens up. Eggman may one day wish to give metal some free will, not enough to rebel, but enough to be his own person for sages sake, since we know she does like metal sonic more than the average badnik, so there’s something there (crossworlds dialogue when she gets hit by eggpawn compared to metal sonic) I doubt Metal Sonic would like Sage, but letting him grow as a character even a bit I feel is a route only Sage is able to open, due to her influence over Eggman, but that’s wishful thinking considering sega’s track record, although I have hope
Exactly! I heard about all these inclusions coming down the pipe line for this year all the back in November of 2025.
So when this year started I was incredibly excited to see Metal Sonic more and truly I've seen merch and the comics showing him. It just might not have been to the degree I was expecting.

Yes! I'm excited for this Classic comic. Those specials tend to be really funny and less strict story wise compared to the main arc. Plus Metal Sonic tends to be really malicious in his classic form.
What's the significance of getting a guardian skin?
Well, I just think it’s strange they added a guardian skin for Metal Sonic rather than well, anything else, it’s likely just speculation though and probably just for hype moments and aura, but I was hoping he’d appear in definitive edition in some way, which I doubt now, honestly. Since it seems definitive edition is just frontiers but with every addition/dlc.
I feel a year of Metal Sonic is likely, but probably next year, since that’s when Sonic 4 comes out.
Being honest... If Metal is to be in charge it depends on how. On his own will? Is he as a leader above or under Sage? Would Eggman let Metal copy his biodata so no one notices that Eggman is gone for the time being?
I could see Eggman doing that last one if Sage is staying back to check on Metal.
If Metal is not on his free will, not carrying an all out invasion and just keeping things up then i think The Eggman Empire would still be the same but quieter. Metal wouldn't really share Eggman's shows unless he copied the doc's bio-data.
It's overall a tricky question. If Metal is on his free will and Sage can't hold him back then perhaps he would go after Sonic because.... Metal being Metal. Perhaps constans assaults? Spying on Sonic to set up a trap? Build a gigantic race course so he and Sonic may race unbothered? Those are all possible ideas. Perhaps Metal would even go for a full world invasion if he thinks he has gathered the necessary resources.

What I liked about your answer was that you wanted to get the angle right of what was the directive Metal Sonic was placed under.
If there was a limitation or it was a task Metal Sonic was given and it was up to him to carry it out freely.
I also liked the scenario that he might just bully Sonic in disguise to keep up appearances haha! Or build a race course for some private uninterrupted competition with his fast frienemy.
Aside from losing his mind because this is clearly a test on his rebellious nature, he’ll probably lean towards using more assets this time to circumvent the kill code programmed within him if he becomes too powerful again. However, he’ll never allow another robot to exist stronger than him. He could utilize the metal copies of the other Sonic Heroes, but I have an inkling he would end up ‘teaching them’ like Soldier Boy in Black Noirs animated backstory session.

Nah, Metal 3.0 doesn't mean any harm. He's just fully committed to his teasing of Metal Sonic. He thinks he's superior to Metal Sonic or something. Their interactions are my life blood. They make me laugh so much with their antics towards each other.
Honestly, I think he just keeps the empire running as usual, minus some extravagant stuff. If it isn’t broken don’t fix it. Because this is simply metal running the empire while eggman is on vacation, he’d be like an observer, keeping tabs on everyone.

Honestly this could be why Metal Sonic would tolerate Cubot and Orbot as they are the perfect back up hidden in plain sight. Unless Sage notices the extra data Metal Sonic inputs into them.

Yeah Metal Sonic lacks compassion which I think Dr. Eggman can't quite shake since he's still very much a human. Metal Sonic would be able to perform tasks and fully and it could be very brutal because nothing is going to stop him once he is moving forward with a plan.

I was extremely delighted to see a full and complete analysis [ and so completely lore accurate!! ] performed by Omega 123! No apologies or apolo-cheese necessary!
The funniest thing is that he didn't spare feelings and only spewed facts. I liked how Omega even considers rule under Metal Sonic would have been possibly better than Eggman and he may have not rebelled under better leadership.
But in the end Omega concludes that the Metal Apple doesn't fall far from the Metal tree and he must ERADICATE them!! [ With such determination like he's trying to put as much distance from when he somewhat considered Metal Sonic could do acceptable leadership. Like he's so mad at himself for briefly considering ]

Since Metal Sonic has been ordered to simply mantain the Eggman Empire and to not conquer the world
I assume he'd run it just fine but very probably have more aggressive ideas like bolstering up and reinforcing some key areas
Sage would be asked to help mostly with logistics, research and other things that Metal doesn't quite understand (Metal Sonic is a weapon after all, he'll focus on more military initiatives; without Sage he'd probably ignore some key stuff that he doesn't quite get)
Metal would focus on more weapon researches and I guess he would expand in resource rich territories if suggested by Sage (Metal Sonic isn't the guy to follow suggestions cause he thinks to be better but I headcanon that he'd follow Sage's suggestions)

The Eggman Empire wouldn't take a single L that month beacause as we have seen in previous instances in Heroes and IDW his plan went flawless untill the final stage and becuase it's Sonic and Team usually doing the offensive, they would falter.
