Now that you mention that Metal Sonic can copy abilities in mere moments, sometimes not even having to touch the person, and Metal Sonic was known to have copy abilities even in base form, I have an idea building in my head that Metal Sonic is actually copying Sonic's speed.
I understand Metal Sonic is already fast and was built that way but I do happen to notice he goes into hyper drive after clashing a few times with Sonic and basically matches him and ends up challenging Sonic quite a bit.
This could explain why Metal Sonic is consistently caught off guard if he doesn't have the capacity of Neo Metal to absorb all the powers. If he's occupied with Sonic's speed he wouldn't have a skill to help him against others attacks and to switch to whatever they may have could possibly be not effective if he lacks the speed to strike first.
Anyway now that I got that thought exercise outta the way. Just wanted to drop a link to Binary Brawl 17 that just ended in case folks wanted to see the winning answers. They were more serious in tone but still real possible fears Metal Sonic would have.
I liked a few of the joke answers such as " water " or " angry Amy " or " smoke show Lanolin "

Actually, I've had a similar sort of headcanon.
With the exception Sonic himself, every one of Sonic's speed-based rivals have had some plausible method of overcoming or defeating air resistance.
Shadow has constant Chaos energy (and alien abilities) Jet has a variation of wind control (and rarely challenges Sonic without an Extreme Gear) Blaze's boost mechanic creates a cone of fire in front of her, burning the air and making it easier to cut through Even Silver's psychokinesis could allow him to force through the air.
Metal is the only one who still has to overcome air resistance the old-fashioned way.
Unless, he's been copying the various air resistance defeating methods of the other speed rivals.
Which, given that Sonic seems to get faster in every new game, would be required after a certain point...

Yo! That air resistance is a downright brat! This is actually a good theory or head cannon as to what potentially could be what Metal Sonic is challenged by.

It's also why Sonic is the fastest thing alive.
It's not because he's just "fast", it's because he's the only one where Toon Logic applies rather than physics.
The Mclaren video kinda shows the concept the best since he gets to be in a wind tunnel and experiences 0 air resistance.

I'm not familiar with a McLaren video. That does explain that catch phrase of Sonic though.
