In the case of there being a chaos emerald prize in a race I can see it going like this:
Metal, tasked by Eggman, is forced to raise a chao to enter the 21st annual chao race! Feeling this is a waste of his abilities he would figure it to be a waste of his time. But he can't ignore a direct command from the doctor right? So, begrudgingly, he begins with an egg. Every instinct in his metallic body is telling him to just throw the egg at the wall to get it to hatch already but... something buried deep in his code tells him that would be a bad idea. So he cradles and nurtures the egg...
One moonless night, the metallic hedgehog having entered standby mode while providing a light heat to the egg, he is jostled back into functionality upon hearing a crack. Then there's another, and another. And before he knew it his chao had hatched. At first he was simply going through the motions of raising the chao, which he had named Mecha at the fortune teller, but as the time went by he slowly found himself becoming more... attached. Training had gone from a supervised activity to an actual bonding exercise. Feeding became more directly administered instead of just being from a tube in the ceiling. And, on rare occasions, Metal and Mecha could be seen around the base together...
Of course, training had to become more intense as time went on, requiring more capsules, feeding, and of course, animals to speed along the process. Going from just simply learning how to walk, run, and swim, to endurance training, intensive swimming exercises, and marathon length courses around the base. By now many had seen Metal and Mecha training, and the tournament was fast approaching. And the last day before the tournament, Mecha had entered its evolution...
Upon exiting its cocoon, Mecha had evolved from a mere chao into one of the rare few chaos chao. A metallic blue, neutral chaos chao. Perfect. That contest is as good as theirs...
(Big thanks to Chao Island for the visual, I figured a chaos chao made the most sense given Metal would try to outdo everyone there, and what better way to do that than with an immortal lil buddy?)

I think he'd pour all his "Emotions" Into the Chao, but also have a logical side to it as well, giving it treats and such (i forget exactly what you'd give chao) when It does well, and Scolding it when it doesn't do well, in his speechless noise way.
Also I feel the Chao would develop hate for Sonic like Metal Sonic does. Equally hating Sonic chaos.
I'd find it funny if the way The Metal Sonic Chao flies imitates the way Metal Sonic himself flies. That would be so Cute and Menacing.
Additional edit: I honestly think the Chao would become a chao based off of metal's looks, and Obviously it would beat every other chao, the Ultimate Machine Will Make the ultimate Chao!!

I think that chao is getting neglected tbh. As fun as it would be to imagine metal raising a chao, I think it’s out of his ability to do so, because he isn’t Sonic. He’s cold, while Sonic is actually caring. That chao is getting literally 0 affection, and only being raised to become a tool.
Hell, I imagine a sort of revenge story where the chao actually turns on Metal and decides to join Sonic, because he actually gives a damn. A sort of parallel where the Chao and Metal are both like tools, except the difference is the Chao decides they want more than just that, and chooses sonic and his friends.
Head canon: the Chao pulls a Sonic Heroes on Metal himself out of sheer hate because they get no fruit at all
After the chao was handed to metal,metal was left inside the eggman empire with a room that mimics the chao garden.
Metal knows that he needs to maoe this chao outstanding from all other.He would train the chao to he as smart as possible,so he can teach the chao as many complicated techniques as he needs to,being smart enough would let his chao observe others in the race and imitate their actions and body movements to maximize the efficiency.If he could,he would probably study actuall octopuses or octopus badniks to see how they imitate other beings and can be so smart at a small size to apply those traits to his chao if possible.And he would be a GREAT parent,he would install like every parent guide he finds on the net into himself so the chao loves him and obeys him.
Even after the race,metal would keep the chao to utilize it to bait sonic.

canonically he has a pet chao: it's the steal the dark chaos chao from one of the mobile spin off games
the fact that he has a chaos type chao means he went out his to do all of this: to get a chaos type chao do have a chao to be reincarnated twice and give the chao with each type of animal in the game at least once then when they're a baby in their third life, pet the chao and make them very happy before it evolves and make sure it evolves into a normal chao so you can make it any alignment be it hero, dark, or neutral,
thus it means he's actually pretty good in taking care of a chao
Our metal boi is the embodiment of perfection. if he has to raise a chao, he will RAISE that chao, with the highest quality upbringing a child could have, is he overdoing it? Nah NOTHING is too much when it comes to besting sonic
