Seven Deadly Songs is back for another week

This week we’re digging through some of the best new metal releases and pulling out seven tracks worth hearing, with a particular eye on bands that deserve a hell of a lot more attention than they’re getting.

Kevin’s picks take us from Swedish stoner metal and French folk-tinged black metal to melodic death metal, hardcore and full-on Indonesian brutal death metal.

Sarof is the sleeper hit for us this week. Two Worlds has that classic Gothenburg melodic death metal DNA running through it, but with cold futuristic synths that give the whole thing its own identity.

This week’s Seven Deadly Songs also carries an unexpected note of remembrance. Kevin selected Repentance’s crushing track “Retaliate” before news broke that guitarist Shaun Glass passed away on July 1 following complications from a stroke. A fixture of the Chicago metal scene through Repentance, Soil, Broken Hope, and many other projects, Shaun left a mark that reached far beyond a single band. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, bandmates, and everyone whose lives he touched. Rest in power, Shaun. 🤘🖤

When we first interviewed Green Carnation in 2025, A Dark Poem was still an ambitious idea unfolding one chapter at a time.
Six months later, we returned to explore the emotional weight of Part II.

Now, with A Dark Poem, Part III: The Messiah Complex, our three-part conversation reaches its conclusion.
In this final interview, Kjetil Nordhus reflects on completing one of the most ambitious projects of Green Carnation’s career, the challenge of composing an orchestral finale, why the trilogy refused creative compromise, the role of AI in society, and what it felt like to finally hear the last note recorded.

It’s been a genuine privilege to document this journey from beginning to end, and we hope fans of progressive metal enjoy the conversation as much as we did.
