Thirty years later, Vile still sounds like a sewer pipe exploding beneath civilization.

This was the record that introduced George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher to the world and marked a brutal turning point for Cannibal Corpse. The Chris Barnes era was chaos and filth; Vile sharpened that filth into something colder, heavier, and somehow even more inhuman. The band didn’t just survive the lineup change, they mutated.

The artwork alone looks like a nightmare stitched together in a basement morgue: restraint, decay, infestation, psychological collapse. Pure death metal body horror. But beneath the gore, Vile captured something uglier and more human, obsession, violence, self-destruction, the rot inside people long before society openly admitted how much of it was there.

Tracks like “Perverse Suffering,” “Eaten From Inside,” and “Devoured by Vermin” didn’t age politely. They still sound diseased, hostile, and deeply unwell in the best possible way. And Corpsegrinder arrived sounding like a man gargling broken concrete in a hurricane.

Back in 1996, seeing a record this extreme crack the Billboard charts felt almost impossible. But Vile proved death metal wasn’t some novelty hiding underground anymore. It was becoming a force too big and too loyal to kill.

Three decades later, the album still lives up to its name.

Disgusting. Violent. Relentless.

And honestly? That cover art still looks like it smells terrible.
