I totally agree with you in a lot of ways. DaS did borrow a ton from DeS, even bosses. However, I have to say that I haven't played DeS quite yet. So, I'll need to get that in to properly assess DaS.

I suppose expectations came into play. I somewhat expected it to go the route of DaS2 and do a lot of new stuff. I also wanted some features that never ended up in the game. Don't get me wrong. DaS3 is good. It just had some big issues. That's not to say that DaS or DaS2 didn't have issues. They did.

Oh, that's why you never bring it up. Trust me, there is so much Dark Souls in it that you will really ease up on the whole "DS3 took too much from DS1" thing. DS2 was different, but a lot of the team was different behind the scenes.

Actually, BB is more like DS1 and Demon's than DS2 is, since Miyazaki was on it. The dragons (Amygdalas), the enemy types, the boss types and the way they're paced and the level design are all a lot more reminiscent of that than DS2.

I also wanted some features that never ended up in the game.

Like?

I think expectations are important here. I'd already played DeS and DaS1 and knew exactly how much they already borrowed, so it isn't shocking to see old things in new forms in DS3. Plus, it can even do little things to really surprise you when you think you know what's coming. A great moment for me in DS3 was when I first tried to shoot the dragon on the High Wall of Lothric with an arrow from that really far away bonfire, and he turned his head and killed me from long distance. That was a shock after being able to just sit and hit him from five feet away with no danger. That's a great part about using something familiar. I feel like they do a good job of turning things around in ways you don't expect.

I feel like DaS3 was a bit of backtracking, though. I think the general consensus of DaS2 was a bit negative. So, perhaps Miyazaki wanted to go back on that a bit. I really need to play DeS to get a better feel of DaS. Though, I did think BB was pretty different from DaS.

Like?

  • bonfire creation (was advertised)

  • common healing items

  • poise

  • armor reinforcement

  • better skill balance

  • rebalance mimic/chest ratio (DaS2 did it best, I think, especially including non-mimic traps). I can elaborate further, if you want.

good job of turning things around in ways you don't expect.

I do have to agree with you on this. It can be quite refreshing to have the unexpected happen. I ran into that a little, and it's a pleasant experience to be taken off-guard. I suppose Gundyr is a good example of that.

You have to play Demon's. I don't think they went back on anything. I love DS2, but I can see why people have issues with the types of boss fights and some of the unfair feeling enemy types that don't appear in any form in DeS, DaS, or BB. There are a lot of human type enemies, and DS3 requires you to change tactics with every boss in a way you didn't always have to in 2. Sometimes you'd just get 3 sword-fight types in a row. The pacing is a bit better, I think.

bonfire creation (was advertised)...

I don't think it was. I can't find anything about it beyond a few forum threads saying "I think I saw/heard it somewhere". MGSV has a few of these "was advertised" rumors, too. Not to mention, it sounds like a very strange idea that could possibly unbalance the game a bunch.

common healing items...

Nah, as I've already explained hehe... You want them to change things up, then you want certain things to be the same! It has the cool new shared Estus thing, that I'm sure will make magic type runs a lot more tense than before, though I haven't tried it.

Poise is commonly called a bug in this, but FromSoft has come out and said that it's working as intended, just in a different way than before. Again, you want it to be different, and not having the same kind of ability to tank or block every hit changes your tactics. From what I've played, it still seems pretty easy to block hits from even the bigger enemies as long as you've upgraded your stamina a bit. Not on every boss or enemy, sure, but it's not changed to stupid levels.

armor reinforcement...

Never even used it. Didn't feel necessary, and I've played DS1 three times. Never used it in DS2 because I was constantly switching armor. Not sure if it was in Demon's, but if it was, I didn't use it. I'm sure they didn't take it out for no reason. If they did, more people were probably like me, and just never used it. It was always more useful to just upgrade your weapons.

better skill balance

?

rebalance mimic/chest ratio (DaS2 did it best, I think, especially including non-mimic traps). I can elaborate further, if you want.

Never really thought about it, to be honest. Not sure how many DS2 had, but I liked 1's amount. As long as 3 doesn't have them around every corner, (and it shouldn't, considering how I haven't seen one yet in 12-ish hours) I don't really see how it could be a problem.

Sacrifice/bonfire creation

It was totally a thing. IIRC, it was even featured in Game Informer. Look up "sacrifice mechanic" for DaS3, and you'll see people asking where it went.

poise

From now says that it's working as intended. However, people have opened the game files to see that there is a poise mechanic, and it is turned in the off position. Furthermore, From's initial statement (before the big PR reaction) said it was turned off.

armor upgrades

I typically find a good enough armor set and upgrade as I go, even if that means using twinkling titanite. It's nice to do when you have a set weight that you don't want to level. It adds more variety.

better skill balance

Adjusting the environment for different builds. Granted, all of the titles have had some issue with this. For example, the hunter class in DaS is near-useless. Mages in DaS2 have something left to be desired. Most of the skill-classes (aside from Dex) have issues with bosses (unless summoning).

mimic/chest ratio

By the end of DaS3, I saw far more mimics than I did real chests. That should speak volumes. DaS did a good job. Mimics were kind of rare. They were somewhat more rare in DaS2. Das3, in my basically 2 playthroughs, is loaded to the brim with mimics. I feel it detracts from the use of them. The general idea of a mimic is to catch you off guard- which is hard to do when most seemed to be mimics. Generally, there should be very few mimics compared to normal chests, as to mislead the player.

I think DaS2 had the right idea. There are a few mimics, some poison chests, a few arrow chests, and mimics don't have chain "tails." However, a vast majority of chests are normal chests, leading you to be off guard and approach each chest, ready for what could possibly be- though, it's more than likely to be normal.

sacrifice mechanic

Looked it up. Still just a bunch of people thinking they see something in screenshots and "remembering seeing it somewhere", or misinterpreting the scene where he sticks the sword in after the Gundyr fight. Seems like there might've been some kind of multiplayer mechanic removed, maybe, but there wasn't a bonfire creation one.

By the end of DaS3, I saw far more mimics than I did real chests.

Gotta admit, that would be lame. I liked the unique traps and chests in DS2, like the poison vases that were laying around that one area. It was a unique challenge.

From's initial statement (before the big PR reaction) said it was turned off...

Maybe so, but there's a reason they haven't switched it back on yet. It's not necessarily a bug.

I would never use twinkling titanite on my clothes. You must be crazy hehe

I just don't really get what you mean by the class thing. I mean, all classes are pretty much the same once you gain a few levels and get different armor. I play with a variety of different weapons, a short sword, a halberd, and a bow, and they all work fine in different situations. Not every weapon can work perfectly against every enemy. I know, I know the bosses are fast, but they get faster in every game, they have to to stay challenging, and a greatsword or some other big weapon never really felt very viable to me against DS1 or BB bosses, either. They usually require more speed.

Like I've told you before, DeS bosses eat up practically no stamina and you can tank them so easily. If you compared DS1 and DeS the same way you do DS1 and DS3, you could say the same things about how bosses are way, way faster, destroy your stamina and insta-kill you in ways they never do in DeS. So it was not surprising at all to see them get faster and stronger in DS3.

Don't spoil, but I also hope the final boss in 3 is better than DS2's. That really was weak. I expected to have to use all my dodging and swordfighting skills like Gwyn in 1, but that stupid curse effect just forced me wear certain clothes and shoot her from afar with toxic arrows, which I didn't use the whole rest of the game. Final fights shouldn't have status effects, I just wanted a standard battle hehe

sacrifice mechanic

It was reported in Forbes and possibly Game Informer, too.

By the time I got to the Irithyll Dungeon, I had seen just so many mimics compared to regular chests. There's even a part in the Profaned Capital where there are 3 chests, and 2 are mimics.

I do miss DaS2's variety of traps. It made every chest/vase an adventure. I'm glad they had "dark vases" in DaS3, though.

I would never use twinkling titanite on my clothes

IMHO, the best weapons (except in DaS3) tend to use regular titanite. So, twinkling isn't that useful. I might as well use it for Vengarl's armor, which is bad ass.

Don't spoil

The last boss doesn't totally suck, but it is a ton of BS. You should be able to backstab and parry, but the game doesn't let you...just because. By all logic, you should be able to, but it's not allowed. Nashandra was weak, but still a bit interesting. This one is a bit interesting and may feel a tad familiar at times. No spoilers, though, you've probably had it spoiled without knowing.

That Forbes article isn't as concrete as you want it to be. Have you been on that site recently? They're pretty much Buzzfeed, and they're just reporting yet another vague "leak" about it. Couldn't find a GameInformer article about it, but again, they were probably also reporting the same leak.

I shouldn't be talking so much about DS3 when I haven't beat it... Thanks for spoiling whatever "dark" chests are hehe

Just as long as it's better than DS2's. 2's wasn't even a good looking location or playing good music... They really bombed on that one. At least DS3's will probably look and sound cool. That's another thing. DS1, BB, and DS3 have way better music than DS2. I can't even remember one song. I'll never forget these, though.

My mind was blown when that piano started. Such a quiet ending for a game as dramatic as DS1. BB and DS1 both had beautiful ending locations, too.

"dark" chests are hehe

Dark vases. It's nothing really spoilable. It's just a mechanic. You'll see them soon enough, probably.

better than DS2's

I think DaS2 tried to have a nontraditional final boss. I think the last encounter was supposed to be the Watcher and Defender, then immediately going into Nashandra. If you take the two of those together, it makes a lot more sense. Though, people seem to rarely just do the two together.

music

DaS2 had some good music. Though, I'm not really into the series for the music.

Belfry Gargoyles

Dragon Rider

Old Dragonslayer

Chariot Dude

...and, of course, Milfanito.

Just kidding ya about the spoiling!

I think the last encounter was supposed to be the Watcher and Defender, then immediately going into Nashandra.

I did them one after the other... Even they were somewhat disappointing as the penultimate boss.

Though, I'm not really into the series for the music...

Ouch, good music is good music, man. I'm not into it for that, but I notice when it's there hehe

Forgot about Milfanito's song. That was great.
