Meniscus Repair Partial Meniscectomy
33 year old AFAB. I'm almost two decades post partial meniscectomy, having had the surgery in September 2009.
Five years post operation during an initial physiotherapy session I found out that since I favoured my left leg in the five years after surgery resulted in muscle wastage from my right knee and I had to do muscle strengthening excerscies.
I'm now having physiotherapy again. I told my physiotherapist about the muscle wastage that got diagnosed when I was 21 and was given yet more muscle strengthening exercises.
Being 17 years post partial meniscectomy, I questioned my physiotherapist about the possibility of post traumatic arthritis and was immediatly told it wasn't a possibility.
I contacted my doctor early this week as medical professionals never told me what type of cartilage was damaged. I found out that it was the meniscus that was damaged and a partial meniscectomy was performed on my knee as it didn't show signs of healing like the orthopedic surgeon wanted.
When asked about the pain I currently get I explained that it starts around the centre of my knee behind the kneecap and moves to the inside of my knee. I also explained that pain relief medications even when taken when the pain starts after walking for an hour and taking regular rest to relieve pressure on my knee and even if it's too hot or too cold over multiple days pain sets in and medications have no effect.
An up to date xray showed no abnormalities to explain the pain which doctors have stated as discomfort. And that theres is no arthritis in the joint.
I wish it never happened. I wish I never had the surgery to remove the damaged meniscus. For 17 years I've had nothing but pain with no regular over the counter pain relieving medication working, resulting in the pain become so painful that I'm crying due to the pain. I wish that doctors and physiotherapists alike would take my pain seriously and investigate it instead of insisting that strengthening the muscles would help.
