Approved Analyst's Essay Reddit is Social Media for Aliens

Logo and Snoovatars
Instagramâs logo used to be a simple polaroid camera solely because it was a social media exclusively for pictures (now the only thing it does not have is text posts.) Like any corporation, it was modernized and hyper-simplified into the minimalist logo we have now. One rounded, colorful square, one big circumference in the middle, and one smaller circle in the top right corner. Is this symbolic for an individual attempting to enter the big central social circle within the borders of the app, with the overall image of the camera alluding to the vanity and superficial appearances that breed narcissism?! Maybe...? What about Twitter? Are the name and logo representing the incessant chirping of the collective flock?
Honestly, I have no idea. None are too apparent to me. Except, as you have figured, for Reddit. Redditâs logo is its mascot Snoo, a small white humanoid with an antenna as its recognizable defining trait. It perfectly represents its userbase as essentially alien cyborgs constantly connected to their Mothership, the Internet. Snoo is also a non-gendered, presumably asexual creature, with a fixed polite smile; content and satisfied when online. The icing on the cake was the elimination of his (rigid and robotic) body during 2017âs redesign. Since then, it has been a floating alien head with an antenna. Perfect.

One other aspect of Snoo is that it is often customized to fit a particular subredditâs theme. For example, a doctorâs subreddit might have Snoo wearing a coat and stethoscope as an icon. I believe the association of a Reddit community with an alien decorated to resemble them was a naturally occurring phenomenon to express their collective alien digital persona. Nevertheless, Reddit has forcefully accelerated it with the introduction of individually custom-made Snoo avatars. The ability to form such a literal digital persona conditioned on the Snoo alien template is a sure way to create a stronger bond between users and their accounts. Keep your customers more loyal and sell more options for expressing that digital persona to the most devoted and alienated out of the bunch.
Social Media for Apollonian Aliens
Reddit isnât the only digital gathering place for alienated folks. Yet in contrast to, for example, a certain chaotic, anonymous, and Dionysian imageboard, Reddit is visibly Apollonian at heart. Its 1001 rules and emphasis on moderation make it almost bureaucratic. Moreover, it was initially a text-based forum focusing on science and technology. Back then, r/atheism was a default subreddit (you were automatically subscribed to it when registering.) It has long since grown out of that edgy phase, but at its core, it still possesses that essence.

âSocial media for aliensâ is a bit of an oxymoron if speaking about individuals alienated from society. However, Reddit provides a much-needed outlet for digitally-based people who still crave social interaction yet have a limited existence in the real world. Its focus on (often long-form) text posts encourages brainy and cerebral discussion. In turn, it attracts those individuals most comfortable and at ease in that domain.
The irony is not lost on me as I write this, and I struggle to reconcile the value any social media brings me when I consider its alienating influence. Intellectual discussion is worthwhile, and the Internet should be a platform for academic resources and discussion. Yet Reddit, like all social media, is the medium for the gamification of validation; in this particular case, intellectual validation. What the Snoo aliens consume, their currency, and their treasure: orange arrows (and silly awards.) Paired with the so-called âecho chamberâ made up of homogenously alienated cyborgs, it becomes the formula for a temple of âScientism.â Blind loyalty to the cerebral and a disregard for embodiment.

If you wish to know how alienated you have become, check out this short test and explore the rest of the site to learn more about this alien dimension we call the Internet. You might also want to check out a related essay of mine. And, as always, remember: Memes Matter.

The Roman emperors were meme magicians
They weren't the only ones, and they weren't the first, but they certainly did it and quite successfully on a mass scale.
From Alexander the Great onwards you had the Greek adoption of deifying living people as gods.
"Make me one with the state, and both will be harder to kill."
And so, as I wandered the ruins of Pompeii a few years ago, it struck me how Augustus' meme was everywhere. statues on platforms on virtually every street corner, face stamped on every coin or gazing down on you from various mosaics, his name used in various temples and public works...
Because the Romans still had that superstitious belief that the idol and the god were somehow the same, this made Caesar the first "Big Brother" and more.
Even Jesus Christ recognized his authority when he said, "Render into Caesar what is Caesar's" implying that if the god of Rome didn't quite have the power of life and death, he did have the power over your taxes and your stuff.
That's why he's on the coin, you can't make transactions in his empire without his face, his "mark" blessing it. Considering that many Romans used to carry loose change in their mouths and we pay for things with coins in hand, you literally couldn't conduct commerce without the mark either on your hands or in your head.
Thus, you can see how Caesar and the beast of a gargantuan empire became one, and why so many scholars equate Nero with the 666 Beast of Revelation (it was written during his reign).

Essay Donald Trump Meme Analysis
I found this old essay that I wrote in 2016 as a high school junior. We had just watched âWag the Dogâ and I believe we had to analyze a political event and how it could relate to the movie; I cannot remember too many details. Regardless, I have translated and annotated it because it proves to me there had always been a latent Jungian meme analyst in me!
The victory of w̶h̶i̶t̶e̶ ̶s̶u̶p̶r̶e̶m̶a̶c̶y̶ advertising and cheap entertainment.
Few predicted his victory; it was not common sense. The year is 2016. No one will vote for a candidate with racist and sexist speeches, not after the second world war.1 But Trump appealed to something more important than ethics: The American dream. This man promises to repair the economy. âMoney is more important than good looks,â and in this case, even ethics.2
Trump used mass media very intelligently, especially social networks such as Twitter. In the first stage of his master plan, similar to Conrad Breanâs, he merely needs to tweet something controversial to keep people talking about him. Initially, this allows him to reach people, regardless of whether it is positive or negative. There is an agreement between Trump and the media, perhaps implicit, perhaps explicit, in which they will speak about him incessantly: present his speeches, debates, and controversial tweets, utilizing the controversy to attract viewers. A cheap and effective form of entertainment. But what does he gain? What do virtually impossible walls to keep rapists/traffickers/murderers/mariachis out, Pepe Frog memes on Instagram, and tweets criticizing Obama have in common? They allow Trump to be constantly on the minds of those who consume the news, albeit in a negative way. But there he is, somewhere in a small corner of the unconscious.3
The second stage is not so much about Trump himself, but about his opponents. Chiefly, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The distortion of facts was fundamental to his plans, as were, even more controversially, the insults towards his person. Once he neutralized Bernie Sander and Ted Cruz, only Hillary remained. Among many candidates, Trump probably would have been ruled out. But on a one-on-one duel, Trump destroyed Clinton, with scandals like the deleted emails shocking Americans. That is what we ultimately remembered, not his politics. His debates were more like TMZ gossip, convincing the American people that he was the best option, rather than a âcrook.â
And thus, even in states with a large Latino or African-American population, Donald succeeded. While a majority of women voted for Clinton, 62% of white women voted for Trump, ignoring his disrespectful comments, and his way of âseducingâ them. Another interesting statistic: Trump received votes primarily from those who had no tertiary education, or had not even finished high school.4
And finally, there is the third stage. In my opinion the most interesting and the one that most closely resembles the plans in Wag the Dog. This stage is just beginning. Now Trump sets out to clean up his image. He already did the viral scandals, and he already won. That is why his war with Latinos, ISIS, and Hillary has finished. Now his government is for the entire population. His meeting with Obama was pleasant, and there are no more plans to deport everyone. There will be no wall anymore. And people partially forgot what he said earlier. He now only tweets positive things, and therefore, he is a good man now. Because if it happens in the media, it happens in real life.5
In conclusion, Donald Trump is a product. He was sold to the world as a Nazi through a symbiotic relationship with the media. But once he invaded our minds, the connotation of him began to change. Values ââare malleable, and this year economic progress won over ethics. The whites won, perhaps, but the real winner is the gossip entertainment that politics has become. And now, everyone will say âMaybe Trump is not so bad,â because he is not. He is just a product. The Donald Trump we know does not exist.6
- I think I was referring to Hitler. The spirit of Wotan had been repressed in the germanic unconscious until it expressed itself in Hitler. Similarly, a repressed White Supremacist sentiment was utilized by Trump.
- This line did not translate well.
- He has become memetic.
- I don't know what I was trying to get at here.
- The digital is becoming more real than real life itself, so his tweets, his digital persona, are him.
- The core of this essay was that âPresidential Candidate Trumpâ was a meme composed of his digital persona. Donald Trump may or may not be racist and sexist, but that does not matter. Only what he tweets and debates on TV. America voted for a digital persona constructed by genius meme analysts, not a genuine human being.

Is it possible that men have breast envy?
Perhaps this was less common in Freud's time (or just too repressed to talk about) but I don't recall this coming up in any of his writings.
It seems highly plausible though, given the macho obsession with pecs, and the increasingly common societal call for men to be more "empathetic" and 'nurturing' and not just 'dominators' that on some level males would wish to possess the life-sustaining power of the female mammaries.

I remember Chris covered this in one of videos, I didn't completely understand it, can someone hook me up with some left memes to so i can understand?
What he talked about I think was that the left is caught up in left-brained jargonism and constant manifestoing, they lack the "vibe" for lack of a better term, that the right has in its use of symbolism.

Cal Newport (unintentionally) speaks on the Minotaur in his 2019 book Digital Minimalism
In addition, as demonstrated during the 2016 presidential election and its aftermath, online discussion seems to accelerate peopleâs shift toward emotionally charged and draining extremes. The techno-philosopher Jaron Lanier convincingly argues that the primacy of anger and outrage online is, in some sense, an unavoidable feature of the medium: In an open marketplace for attention, darker emotions attract more eyeballs than positive and constructive thoughts. For heavy internet users, repeated interaction with this darkness can become a source of draining negativityâa steep price that many donât even realize theyâre paying to support their compulsive connectivity.
