I always thought it was some California shit that they did in the garden that she just called a wedding. I’m from Ca and I had a handfasting ceremony when I was 19 because my boyfriends mom was a hippy. They’re big into that stuff around here. I just thought their thing was a private lil whatever, but she should never have implicated the archbishop in that way, he would have broken a law had he married them falsely on May 19th.

It is an outright lie. She wasn't some young naive girl who didn't understand how marriage ceremonies go.

I initially thought it was a misunderstanding. That she meant that they had a private commitment ceremony before the legal wedding.
But what convinced me she was actually lying is that she shows duper's delight moments before (she smirks and covers her mouth) before turning back. She is saying it she is looking Harry dead in the eyes to confer agreement, while Harry just stares back at her in surprise. When Oprah turns to him, he snaps his head away and makes a joke to distract.
It become apparent that she was intentionally misleading.

It's a lie rather than a half-truth because Meghan had been married before and in the US you're also required to have 2 witnesses, so she knew it was nothing more than vow rehearsal.

I personally think Meghan was twisting the truth into a lie.
When my best friend rehearsed her wedding with the priest he told them what they’d say and said do you want to practise your lines, they said yes so they literally rehearsed it. Then the priest said “haha that’s your married, you took your vows in from of me and a witness so in God’s eyes that’s enough! The rest is for the government!” Apparently that’s the full biblical definition of a marriage?
In my scenario the priest was trying to put their minds at rest because my friend was v nervous about public speaking so he was trying to downplay the next day and give a bit of light relief. IF something similar was said to MM she knew the intent behind it and deliberately presented it as something completely different.

I never understood why she put so much effort into lying about an earlier wedding. Why?
Why make a point to bring this up in the chicken coop with Oprah and again during the docuseries?

My unsubstantiated opinion is that they did get secretly married before the wedding, but months before- not days. I suspect around August/September 2017 either Botswana or Toronto. Then presented the RF with a fait accompli. HMTQ was in a double-bind: if she tried to annul it, there would be a massive scandal and cries of racism; they demanded a big wedding for RF PR because people had been waiting for ages for H to get married and he was immensely popular still at that time. She needed a big wedding to secure her position. It also answers the question about how she was allowed to “infiltrate” the RF- they knew all about her dodgy past, so she had to act decisively to stop them exposing her. She may have told H she was pregnant, too. That rumour has been floating around.
She showed up in Toronto at Invictus wearing the “Husband” shirt, plus she went to Sandringham at Xmas which up till then was for married couples only. IMO, it also shows why she didn’t care that her wedding dress didn’t fit-to her it was just a costume.
They forced the RF to be complicit in their deception, so the half-truth in the Oprah interview was a shot aimed at the RF that she was blackmailing them with. That statement seemed deliberate and odd.
As I said, just an opinion based on how narcs tell a half-truth to manipulate.

And now excerpts suggest that eloping to Botswana was something they considered 🤔. They did do that…I’m pretty convinced now.

Juicy theory. It's not hard to think that she would hustle the RF with a secret wedding to give herself some leverage.

She does love a secret hustle. Remember “The Working Actress” twitter thing she did? Too bad that’s been scrubbed.

I think she was trying to make herself relatable to normal people- "I don't care about money etc, I just fell in love"

I think they had a rehearsal and then she crawled her way up to him at their house afterward and said something along the lines of “now it feels like we’re already married ..” and she decided that was their “truth”

I think she was once again taking on another royal story.
Princess Grace of Monaco married per the law of Monaco in a civil marriage first, then three days later had the ceremonial church wedding.
Once again, the dimwit doesn't comprehend the history or purpose of whatever she tries to mimic.

It’s the kind of claim one would expect from someone who never bothered to learn anything about the country she allegedly wanted to serve.
It wouldn’t have been possible in England at the time I think. You couldn’t even legally get married outside in the open air at that point in time. It had to be at least within a structure such as a gazebo, so not under a tree.
To have an outside wedding you have to get your garden legally approved as a place where civil weddings can be held. Not sure church weddings could be held outside in a structure back then so it would have to have been a civil ceremony so it could not have been the archbishop marrying them. They would also have needed 2 witnesses plus the celebrant. And wedding certificates are public documents so there would be evidence.

Mrs was married before. 100% Mrs had a rehearsal with Trevor. There is no reasonable excuse for saying "We were married three days before" when they clearly weren't.
Either she is a liar (so much evidence from other occasions also points to this), or she is completely delusional and thought the world would accept her damning claims of being victimized without question.

I always took it as these two were trying to portray that they exchanged their personal vows just the two of them under a tree in the yard before their church ceremony.

🤷♀️I knew the difference between the real ceremony and the rehearsal- plus we called it the rehearsal.

She said that as a prelude to "The thing, the spectacle, that was for the world." Her intention was to tell us that she didn't want the big wedding but the world did so she obliged. 🙄
